  1. Implementation of the new system can be done in a very short period. But dealing with human resources, staff training local and overseas, overhaul the entire systemwide, transaction/intergration process... another story. Finally, they get rid their outdated KOMMAS (and ABACUS).

Maybe this is the problem. When Swiss introduced e-ticketing, they closed down almost all their ticketing offices in Switzerland. Now if you want to buy a ticket, you have to use the internet. If no internet, then you have to call them. But calling them means that they will charge you for the service, i.e., for doing what you could have done yourself on the internet. This led to plenty of cost savings in terms of office rent, ticketing staff redundancies, paper, etc., . Given the politics at play... hmmm not surprised that takes an IATA deadline to finally force them to do it...

  2. With MH situation right now, losing money to AK and so on...............LCC will fit perfectly for the ill-company, look at all Malaysian, all prefer cheap(OK may be not all, most) stuff. So, with MH creates a LCC, there is a 50/50 chance market for them on unpopular routes, instead of losing 100+ routes to AK right now ;)

Look, 74% Malaysian household make under RM3000-from Malaysian eigth plan, basically very low, and trust me everyone would love to fly in an airplane, it's a pride or something like that. Now their option to fly is AK, but with MH LCC, they may think twice before they choose one. So, MAS needs strategy to make people think twice before flying and get them on their plane. :)

I agree that turning MAS into LCC can increase its $$ turnover, but the problem I see in MAS is not creating turnover, but to reduce cost. The point I was trying to make in my previous post is that you cannot just decide, ok, lets sell cheaper tickets to attract the masses and stop serving food to cut cost and voila, we have an LCC!

How can MAS be Low Cost when its management are expensive, not to mention all its con-sultans? To turn into LCC it has to reconfigure its 737s to have more seats, that's gonna cost a lot! Not only change seats, it may also want to remove the seat recline function like AK (this idea came from Ryanair I think - no recline mechanism = cheaper seats & lighter seats = less fuel burn...). There are many things that MAS has to change, but I think to be an LCC, MAS really needs to be low cost in every area of its operations. In other words, I think that whatever it is that is stopping MAS from cutting its costs now will continue to stop it from cutting costs whether it is a full frills or LCC.

  3. I agree with Pieter, creating an LCC will not necessarily work. Swiss tried it unsuccessfully for their European operations in the aftermath of the Swissair bankruptcy. I guess you can call it the NZ model as Keith calls it.

One problem, as Keith mentioned, is that customers will fly in first or business class on an intercontinental flight to ZRH. Then when they catch their connecting flight to Vienna, for example, they have to sit in economy and don't even get a glass of water. So they started to lose a lot of premium customers that were really needed for their long haul ops.

That to me was not the biggest problem - when I am at the airport, I often see the Swiss baby busses taking more than an hour to turn around. Not only do they sit on the ground too long, they always have to wait for "connecting passengers", i.e., passengers coming in from delayed intercontinental flights. One of the main principles of a succesful LCC is quick turn around times. Swiss wanted to be a LCC, but simply stopping food&beverage service on board is not enough. They need to change the whole operations, like improving their turn around times, getting the crew to multitask, etc.

  4. talking bout weights.. i find MAS had changed their international economy class allowable cargo weight from 30 to only 20kg!!! This is not fair.. Why are they doing these? Fares are up.. and getting these!!!  I know i know off topic!!! :p

Hmm.. I never knew that MAS used to allow 30kg. Usually I only get 20kg and it says so on the ticket. But when checking in, they were usually lenient and don't make a fuss unless it is more than 30kg. I guess the only change now is that they impose the rule strictly. Only once I got 30kg, but it was a special "ethnic fare" for Malaysians travelling home to Malaysia.

Some airlines in Europe already have this policy in place. Maybe they will allow 22 or 23kg, but above that, you start paying! So I don't really know if you can call it unfair. From an airline's point of view, if it says 20kg on the ticket, then it would be unfair for passengers to expect to carry an extra 9kg for free.

US flights used to allow 2 pieces per passenger. Now it is still 2 pieces, but each piece cannot weigh more than 32kg. Not sure why, but I think it has something to do with protecting the health of their baggage handlers.

  5. Good pics Pieter, even more impressive considering you were so far away.

Yeah, Niki flies as Air Berlin on some routes. If you book a flight on Air Berlin, you may end up flying Niki instead.

My wife flew Niki last year ZRH-VIE-ZRH and said that she was very impressed. She even brought one sandwich out for me (free) and it was quite good, definitely better than Swiss. Next time I have to teach her how to write trip reports and take Ah Moi pics as well. ;)

  6. Of course lah, you travel biz class. In the 90s I traveled lotsa biz class (and the occasional 1st) all over the place, and MH was my choice too (at that time I was with a big GLC). But the bulk of travelers use economy. I use economy ever since I started running my own business when I just wanna get from point A to point B at the least cost. So the biz class argument is not relevant to me, and prolly to most travelers. And I found the food on my last MH economy flight (KUL-MAN-KUL, late '05) bland and unappetizing - terpaksa telan sebab lapar! I find SQ economy food more wholesome, which I used for all my trips to the US last year. I hope MH economy feeds me better when I do KUL-DXB-KUL next month.

    .ny

Well maybe not relevant to you, but relevant to the topic. Besides, I am comparing MH biz class to other airlines' biz class, not biz class to economy class. I have been in MH economy class a few times (before this last trip, I only flew GCC once) and comparing MH economy class food to american or European economy class, MH wins easily.

This is my lunch on a Swiss flight ZRH-LHR 2 weeks ago. I think it is a caesar's salad with a couple of pieces of chicken and some croutons. The desert looks like it has been touched by someone else, look at the chocolate part. And guess what... this is business class. Flight time 1 hour 40 minutes. I have flown MH on economy class KUL-BKK... around the same flight time, and the food was better! Only when I flew european or American airlines I start to appreciate MH... economy food on MH (and other Asian airlines) are often better than biz class of the europeans and americans.

  7. Just had 4 flights on Golden Club Class with MH.

Compared to other airline food, MH food is fantastic. You guys who fly MH all the time should try some European or American airline food (if they serve anything at all!!) and you will appreciate MH food as much as I do.

Also, I arrived at 4am at KLIA and not wanting to turn up at my parents house too early and waking everyone up, I went to the lounge and had a shower and found some nasi lemak over there... that nasi lemak is also very good! Most European airline lounges don't even serve proper food even at their home base!

  8. A 757 DHL crashing with a Russian plane just happened when I got accepted as a cadet into SQ. But it definitely did not stop me. Poor thing, the Russian jet was full of children on a school trip.

The air traffic controller was subsequently murdered by a hitman who was hired by one of the parents of the school kids...

  9. Sorry there Imran

    Syakir said he wanted;

    1. The UV filter for lense protection

    2. The ND X4 filter for to reduce glare and highlights during bright day shootings

Anyway these Hoya brand filters are quite cheap here. Bought them for less than RM40 a piece ;)

Where can you get these Hoya filters? Which shop? in KL?

  10. Norman,

Arrived Thurs morning. Golf. Makan. Golf. Makan. Golf. Makan. (i.e., if I don't golf, I won't see dad, if I don't makan, I won't see mum...)

Saturday was golf and then makan. In fact I was in Hartamas square (?) until 7.15pm... my flight was 9pm. Was cutting it close.... otherwise, could have arranged something with you guys as the weather was quite ok.

Khush, sitting on 29th floor in some office building on George St. Can see the harbour bridge... but what's with the weather?? At least I can also see the heavies on final approach. Nice view....

Norman... any more? Did you shoot "penang" arriving?

  11. Hi, Nice pencil. Saw it leaving at about 20.40.

Then met Khushwant on MH123 on exactly the same aircraft as my flight from LHR on the 22nd - "Penang". Hmm... only my third time on an MH 744 but twice on the same one!

Good catch of AFD - is that in service already? How much time do they usually take between delivery and starting service?

Thanks Norman for the map - first few pics, I was standing at the beginning of runway 16, position "A".

The Alps are south of Zurich. So when I saw that the mountains are visible, I moved to the top left corner of the map, position B. You can see the road on the map here. There is a big car park, an ice cream stand, a burger joint, roasted chestnet stall, etc. .. and on weekends, hundreds of people are there watching the planes land.

If you are on the obs deck, then it is the part I marked on the terminal. Now the best place in Zurich is at the runway 28 and 16 crossing. That red spot is exactly where you will be standing to take those pics that Pieter and I took during the A.Net meet. If you come to ZRH, especially on the weekends, you can do a bus tour of the airport that will let you out there for 10 minutes. The tour costs Fr.8 (RM24) if I am not mistaken.

Spot C is the famous Heligril where you get some cool rotating shots.

Spot D is where I took TK... his pics in the snow... also my SA shot in airliners net is taken from there.

Yeah I was surprised when the tower said "Swiss 52 wind calm cleared for takeoff rnwy 32" and then immediately after Swiss 52 confirmed, the tower said "Thai 971, wind calm cleared for takeoff runway 16". Arghh... didn't have wide angle to capture both planes... so one by one lah...

I once posted a shot with one AA holding at runway 16 and another one landing on runway 14 - that's the normal operation. So this simultaneous in opposite direction is something different!

  13. Hmm... bored... waiting and waiting for updates on that AirAsia trip report from the 2 taikos... coming so slowly... these two are teasing us... nevermind. What else can I do but process some pics from my old collection! (need to post-process because of the hazy sky... would have been a good day otherwise as the mountains were quite clear...)

MRJ... please don't have another tailstrike... ok.. . phew, made it! :)
