  1. Yes, very shameful considering that across the Causeway, they have trains both landside and airside to move people across the terminals and we seldom hear of breakdowns there.

Actually I experienced it twice in the past year alone. The first time I had to rush from T2 to T3 and had to run across the MRT station...

  2. Well, through the wonders of marketing, the ME carriers already cornered the market. In the last few years I met a few people here in Europe who went to NZ who were convinced that the trip cannot be done with only 1 stop and 2 stops were required. When I told them that they could have chosen asian carriers for 1 stop flights they would not believe me...

Even last week one of my staff in Frankfurt told me that she needed 4 weeks for her vacation because she would spend more than 30 hours to get there.... huh? When I told her that SQ, TG,CX, etc. would only stop once she looked very confused and then annoyed that no one told her that it was possible.

  3.

I've experienced something similar too. We arrived on a flight from BKI at night on time, but there was nobody to open the gate doors or something, at least that's what they told us.

Happened to me a few times in Singapore. The last time was in Sydney last year.

  4. hmm so many comments against MH, but if I am concerned about my own safety, I would be making negative comments about SQ and BA, etc, I mean, if MH is taking safety precautions, why are SQ and BA not taking the safety precaution?

Or lets say that SQ decides to do this, would you call SQ stupid or start questioning MH's safety practices?

  5. Actually I know a lot of people who have visited Malaysia. Half of them say what a beautiful place. The other half have been scammed. Not just by taxi drivers, but tricked into card games, drugged and robbed, credit card duplicated, etc.

Swiss people do travel a lot and I hear stories about little scams from many countries, but overwhelmingly the elaborate scams are from Malaysia. Malaysians.. Decently educated...low moral values. Sorry, but that is the perception and these incredible stories do get around.

At least credit card companies are on the lookout even if the police are not doing anything about it.

  6. Actually it does. Recently there was a bad brawl between two ethnicity happened right in the smack of KL most famous shopping belt. Plenty of my friends around the region cancelled their trips and divert to Singapore or Thailand. Some just let their cheap fare burnt. To add salt to the wound, several countries/ embassies and MNCs issued travel warning to Malaysia.

Actually Malaysia's multi-cultural identity is our major selling point. Every corner and states in Malaysia has something mysterious to be discovered. Unfortunately even though we are blessed with beautiful beaches, lush green rain forest and relatively affordable delicacies, other factors become major bane for the country to progress.

LH has a history of cancelling and bringing KUL back online. Hopefully they will return soon enough...with shiny new A350!!

Thailand went through various protests, sit-ins, bomb blasts, blocking the highway to the airport in the past, and these were widely reported in Europe. It hasn't affected their tourism industry at all in the long term.

  7. I do not see religion being the main issue here as millions of people travel to Turkey, Egypt, UAE and other Muslim countries every year. From my understanding, most travellers who have visited Malaysia (or KL at least) found out that it is being too modern, too multiracial and it doesnt has a strong single identity such as Japan or Thailand. At least, this is what I read from some Trip Reports about KL on A.net and FlyerTalk.

Good point. This is why outside Malaysia, Malaysian restaurants do not do as well as Thai restaurants for example. The food is too varied. You can crave Thai food in general and go look for a Thai restaurant, but there is no such thing as craving "malaysian food", you would instead crave for single items like nasi lemak, chicken rice, satay, etc., but even this you only do if you know Malaysian food very well. There is a lack of a single identity.

And because we modernise too much, there is a distinct lack of "culture" to see.

  8.

Nope, check on Google Map or earth. the KLIA Express track does not cross the space required for a terminal. It actually runs parallel to the runway. However, they may need to build a bridge across the rail tracks for aircraft to cross.

Yeah, I remember that stupid excuse. Apparently it would have cost a couple hundred million to move the tracks, so they moved to the KLIA2 site and then had to spend 2 billion stabilizing the swampland...

  9.

During economic recession, MNC tend to cut expenses include travel in J-class. Believe most MNC (except O&G) are no longer under cost cutting pressure at executives level.

Local GLC are MH ardent pax, reducing executives perks is not in their dictionary and MoF is unlikely to issue directive to downgrade from J-class. Not many if any of GLC executives will travel in premium Y class.

Believe it is better for MH to upgrade J-class product offering to attract MNC pax.

Agree - big budget cuts happened after sept 11 and then during credit crisis and now there is not much pressure anymore to cut costs - its gone far enough already. Key consideration should be to have better all around J class product, including flight frequency.

  10. Problem at GRU?

I've done ZRH-BCN-GRU and return with LX/SQ 7 times in the past 2 years. Out of this, 3 times my luggage did not make it (although to be fair, SQ is very good at providing compensation, LX provides nothing). Considering that I have done hundreds of flights in my life and in total I can only remember 6 times where my luggage did not make it, having half of these incidents on the same sector is quite astonishing.

For the last trip, my luggage did not arrive in GRU with me and arrived the next day. Then for the return flight GRU-BCN, first, the PPS coordinator in Zurich emailed me that she could not get me an upgrade against miles having tried this for a few weeks already. But, hey, no problem, with SQ this is kinda expected. Then, 9V-SWD (I think) went technical on the ground in BCN and did not make it to GRU. I think SQ tried to call me during the day to inform me but I was in a meeting. I only found out when I arrived at the airport, but they have already re-booked me on the direct LX flight GRU-ZRH . This was even better as I can avoid the transit and arrive 1 hour earlier!

And to top it off, when I checked in for the LX flight, as soon as the nice lady found out that I am Senator, she called her supervisor who then informed me that the flight was overbooked (no doubt partly due to the overflow from SQ), so they upgraded me for free!

    So non-stop flight and also a free upgrade ... I can't complain....

  11. Was hoping that they pick up something like JAL skysuite 2-2-2 with direct aisle access for all seats... Maybe this new seats availability is there and they can install it soonest unlike the more popular ones, CX/AA J cabin styles.

I would always choose 4 or 5 abreast over 6 abreast in business class. Of the European airlines, Swiss is practically the only choice for me.

But of course as a senator, I get to choose the throne seats.

  12. FRA airport is very efficient. The only problem is security checks - I don't remember if you have to go through the checks in a domestic -international transfer (domestic-domestic there is no need) but if you think you are going to be late and the queue looks long, look up at the screen before entering the queues as it will show which flight's passengers can go to the fastrack queue. If your flight is not listed, then you know by their calculation you still have time...

Be prepared to walk a lot at FRA though.

  13. I used to live in Penang many years ago. For a few weekends, I volunteered with a group from school to clean the beaches in the national park on the north west side. We find bottles, clothes, bags... all sorts of rubbish every time. Then we burn them. I don't think any of these items would be "suspicious" unless you find a giant chunk of metal like a 2m part of a plane. Lets face it, when you go to a beach resort like most of us do, by the time you wake up and head down to the beach, the hotel workers have cleaned the beaches so you don't see what gets washed up.

  14.

    they don't have 8's yet.

I've flown their -9's in "business" also, cheap but really more like Y+ if i am truly honest with the product.

Well, more like business minus rather than economy plus :) . Kinda like business class seats before angled lie flats were invented. Better than any economy + I have seen so far.

So I've been on both 8s (ANA) and 9s ! Cool!

  15. I flew Scoot SIN-HKG in June. It was a Dreamliner, but I had no idea if it was a -8 or -9. Does someone know?

Flight was at 1 am, a couple of hours after I arrived from Sydney, so I was too tired to take down the registration.

But paying around USD150 for business class was quite awesome!
