MU to add 7x weekly NKG-KUL and 3x weekly WUH-KUL, CZ to resume 7x weekly CGO-KUL, and WY to increase from 4x to 5x weekly for summer. Are there no more slots left for Chinese carriers at KUL or how much cheaper are our/their outbound port charges at these odd hours? They sure love to arrive/depart KUL between 02:00 and 05:00.

Flights to KUL on Chinese carriers:

MU: NKG, HGH, WUH. KMG, PKX (seasonal)
    CZ: CAN, SZX, CSX, CGO
    MF: XMN, CKG, FOC
    CA: TFU, PEK
    3U: TFU, HAK
    ZH: SZX
    GJ: HGH

Arrive/depart KUL between 02:00 and 05:00 timed well with PRC domestic connection.

Oh dear o, this is really embarrassing and rather poor fleet planning by MH. How can you buy exact number to service the two routes but with two different configurations. London requires five A350XWB with one as spare, then DOH would need another three with one as spare. That's eight airframes at minimum. When the extra frames are not doing back up service, they can be deployed on shorter regional routes without affecting its role as back-up for LHR and DOH. They can have another two frames for HND/NRT. That's ten in total. I would say very poor fleet planning by MH management. Malaysia gomen has a habit of buying equipment just for cukup guna/makan, excuse no budget, lack of budget. Once there is an airframe AOG or crashed the whole operation will be screwed. Then need to buy one two airframes as replacement. OEM is not gonna entertain you or give you a discount for such small purchase unfortunately. And they won't make way in their production line just so you want your one or two jets fast. The recent crash of two helicopters in Lumut has severely handicapped the Royal Malaysian Navy airborne capability.

Bean counters justified it is cheaper to pay compensation than having extra airframe year round.

LHR can be done with 4 but it means if 1 aog u got the headache yesterday. It needs spares with the idea that these fleet numbers will not be impacted by moderate downtime maintenance schedule.

Everytime someone comes up with the idea of using funds for CAPEX you get bazzilion reasons from taukesoh, board, investor, bankers and accountants not to. Its a msian habit that it needs to shed off cause our neighbors have all gone up. As a whole we get nicely build up buildings and assets that dont get maintained once they start hitting up that age it becomes an eyesore. Business owners only starts scratching their heads when the thing actually breaks down or the building becomes unsafe by OSHA.

Another issue is our gov constantly trying to portray the country as still being strong willed when throughout the years there was no financing to renew and modernize. The recent mid air collision we lost significant amount of assets. No one takes out more than 50% of the fleet asset and puts them on aerial display doing dangerous maneuver just to give a false impression that we're still in 2005 lol with many assets around.

Kampung folks have no ideal of actual size of rmn asset, could only tell from aerial display.

Many politicians and policy makers only care of perception as they may not in the same position in a few years time. When s#1t hit the fan, blame all on scapegoat.

  3. Zero luggage lost: Japan's Kansai Airport keeps 30-year record going

    ....

Lost bags typically occur through staff failure to load them at the departure airport or errors in transferring them at connecting airports. According to SITA, an aviation-related system developer based in Switzerland, the world's airline companies mishandled an average 7.6 pieces of baggage per 1,000 passengers in 2022.

But at Kansai Airport, no baggage has been lost due to causes attributable to the airport operator in the 30 years since its opening. The airport handled about 10 million baggage items in fiscal 2023.

    ....

To save passengers from stress, CKTS has a goal of getting bags to the baggage claim area within 15 minutes after an aircraft arrives. Staffers place suitcases on conveyor belts so their handles will face toward passengers, easily picked up. They hand over damage-prone items like musical instruments, strollers and skis directly to passengers. Their careful treatment of baggage extends to things like wiping suitcases dry if they get wet in the rain.

MAHB has much to learn from CKTS.

This popped up on my FB feed today. My perception is that every other year they talk about upgrading in the press and then it goes quiet.

Personally Im finding that the performance has been ok for the past 4+ months although I get priority baggage with MH.

Guess they increase the conveyor speed from MTB to satellite terminal and vv.

I think there are 3 things dragging it down based on conversations with friends and colleagues.
    1. Aerotrain replacement buses
    2. Immigration queues
    3. Just about everything in KLIA 2

The latter is a terrible terminal and unless it's made a separate airport it will forever drag down KLIA down the down the rankings.

KUL T2 was designed and built to be inferior and more inconvenience than T1.

Maybe quite far down on the list of things they need to fix but one of my pet peeves is that they display cities/airport arbitrarily on their FIDS. LHR is "London", KIX is "Kansai", NRT is "Narita", TFU is "Tianfu", BKK is "Bangkok" where as DMK is "Don Mueang" etc (and your passport stamp will say Bangkok Intl Airport for DMK and Suvarnabhumi Airport for BKK). It'd be nice if they display it something like London-Heathrow, Tokyo-Narita, Chengdu-Tianfu etc. Not all travelers are familiar with airport names.

Typical of GLC management, they don't consider from customers point of view.

Glad to see MH-QR partnership going from strength to strength. Qatar Airways are all for mutual benefits for both parties unlike Emirates who prefers to leech on their so-called partners. MH seems to abandon/ does not publicise their EK partnership, only JL partnership remains.

    1. 9:35 AM KUL - 11:55 AM DOH B77W QR 845
    2. 2:55 PM KUL - 5:15 PM DOH A359 MH 164

    4. 9:00 PM KUL - 11:30 PM DOH A359 MH 160

Many online travel agents give higher volume/sales and wider market reach to EK than Mas; Mas price couldn't be competitive. Besides MYS domestic destinations, mas brought little to the table for EK.

MH-QR is a true partnership, MH being a mostly regional carrier is leveraging on QR’s strength in terms of number of destinations and excellent service.

remember how christoph mueller managed to get rid of many MH European destinations and sign a partnership with EK?

then he resigned and got a job in EK! By then, MH was effectively reduced to a minor player on the Europe-Aus/NZ route.

MH seems to have bad luck - the other dodgy deal was with AK!

Airlines alliance meant to take advantage of partners' network.

Whether Mueller was in charge or not at that time, mas was to shrink its European network and Kangaroo route, and still have no plan to rebuild. Also at that time, EK was the only airlines willing to work/partner with MH.

The A330neo is OK and it retains the 2-4-2 economy class seating that many pax like. Airlines like Delta, Virgin Atlantic and TAP seems to like this aircraft a lot. It may be less common in Asia as most of them have opted for A350 and B787 for their new wide bodies. Perhaps MAG chose it on cost grounds - delivery slots are also not as rare as that for the A350/B787. Early retirement is not a major issue because MAG is leasing all its aircraft to be "asset light".

Had mas ordered A350/787 instead of A330 ceo previously, most if not all of current widebodies would be A350/787. current mas management don't seem to plan over 5 years horizon.

Technically Malaysia as a whole has a problem with all this chinamen like companies and taukehs that has also been passed on to the private sectors and now GLCs in many related industries. With the country still focusing on low wage labor, manufacturing downline and limited exposure and interest to STEM R&D based subjects plus a GOV who has no proper revenue stream, it wont bold well long term.

If automation could replace labour in manufacturing, MNC need not set up shops in the 3rd world countries. By moving up the value chain, service industry will still need cheap labours. Cheap labour cost is the key to keep inflation rate low and living cost affordable. That's why US, UK, EU, ME, sg, etc have many migrant workers.

As a employer, I find most locals are complacent with their works and pay, unwilling to learn new skill or responsibility; it forced us to employ foreign professional.

This would mean some A330-300ceo will be leaving the fleet, I believe five A330-300ceo will leave. 10 will be retained to service other heavy trunk regional routes: MNL, DPS, BKK and domestic trunk routes during the school holiday. Also as back up aircraft due to supply chain issue at both Airbus and Boeing, they need to keep older planes to avoid any service disruption. BUT, A330-300 will not be receiving upgrade if you read the recent new releases. They kind of expect no one would spot it. Haha!

With 20 A330-900s coming, and hunch is telling me they will add another 10 more, 30 in total. A330-200 will eventually leave the fleet. Perhaps going to AMAL by Malaysia Airlines to do Haj and Umrah flight. Currently AMAL does not have permanent fleet.

Captain Izham has stated recently they will have 50 narrowbody and 50 long haul by end of the decade. Final tally should be around this:

    • A330-300 = 10
    • A330-900 = 30
    • A350-900 = 10

Replace A330 ceo with A330 neo is like replace DC-10-30 with MD-11. Like MD-11, A330 neo may retire earlier than planned.

Mavcom is taking a regressive step towards standardizing PSC at airports around Malaysia.. Mavcom is splitting KUL T1 and T2's PSC into 2 tiers again beginning 1 June 2024. KUL T1 will incur RM73 for all international flights where as KUL T2 + all other airports (except JHB) will incur RM50 for all flights (ASEAN or outside ASEAN will share the same PSC). Departure from JHB will incur RM16 for domestic and RM50 for international.

It appears that MH will be the biggest loser here. Departure levy is charged based on first international destination (SQ, TG etc. will have lower departure levy compared to MH for say a KUL-LHR/HKG route) and PSC will be much higher for MH than AK/D7 ex-KUL.

They should have grouped it as KUL (T1 & T2) and non-KUL. Out the door MH is already at a disadvantage of RM27 for all ex-KUL pax and RM13 for all transfer pax at KUL.

Believe offpeak hours have lower parking rates and charges for most busy airports. Which is what the chinese and south korean carriers have been going for BKI when yields are low to command prime hours.

Airasia it has been noted a large source of their income has been auxillary based like passenger penalties, luggage, insurance, add-ons etc over the actual barely breakeven base fare.

PRC and Korean tourists to BKI are mostly holiday makers and seasonal.

On 3/14/2024 at 10:46 AM, Craig said:

Don't know. Maybe due to aircraft/slot availability. But usually it's usually the lower yield flights that have these operating hours. KMG-KUL is fine, but KUL-KMG is not. A 2AM arrival means a 3AM back home or to your hotel if you are traveling to KMG. I think you are right that Cebu Pacific/PAL offers these sort of flights between MNL and SIN/KUL as well.

The new Shenzhen Airlines second daily flight arrives KUL around 3AM and departs KUL around 4AM. Not ideal for most pax.

PRC airlines often use redeye flight to test the market/route. If load is justified, they may move to day time.

I agree with most if not all criticism of MAHB/KLIA but I'm not sure how them charging a premium for the most desirable parking spots is anything wrong. Especially as the other parking spots aren't exactly inconvenient.

If MAHB wanted to "maximize revenue" then they should make PSC rates equal to its regional peers. Not sure how they can compete with the likes of BKK and SIN who charge RM97 and RM232 for flights to KUL while we only charge RM40.

PSC is a source of income for MAHB and MAHB doesn't depend solely on PSC. PSC at sin is higher but few pax complaint it is expensive because most are happy with their experience.

MAHB management is still in rent seeker mentality, don't understand what frequent travellers want.

Given most pax profile, not sure how feasible are Jamie Oliver and Hard Rock cafe restaurant at T1.

MAG so called plans for SZB is currently still tight lip. But again do note this is a company group that has been very inconsistent when it comes to long term planning. As for OD there is no indication if they will return cause Lion group is also slowing down its ATR deliveries once the fleet for Wings air has stabilize with no plans to allocate them to Thailand or Malaysia.

Atr has been trying hard to pitch sales but it has not been doing well in this region. MAG actually downscale the number of ATR's on both firefly and MASWings with parts and maintenance reliability being the problem(Same report from thai operaters). Whereas Lion group has been downsizing and retooling the fleet between wings air and its lessors. Turboprop market share is narrowing with it being confined probably to just east malaysia and kalimantan in the future.

The ATR is already the most efficient turboprop aircraft with the amount of passenger it carries based on fuel burn 600kg/hour with a penalty on cruise speed being slow than the jets. If even this is unsustainable, i dont think the A220 or E2 would fair well as they burn more fuel burn than a turboprop and are also heavier and more pricey to do maintenance and only reflect an increase of seats to 130-140. Note Malaysia based carrier's game has always been to deploy a 160-180 seater narrowbody aircraft(You also have airasia eyeing on switching all a320 to 240 seater a321s) to keep ticket prices low and fill them up by volume except there's a lot of destinations that do not hold consistent yielding volume.

City airports catered mostly for business travellers, who are willing to pay premium for shorter travelling time to city or home e.g ticket price to HND, LCY,  SHA, etc is generally higher.

To protect KUL volume and placing the cart in front of the horse, turboprop is deployed in SZB.

What business travellers look for is frequency. If 50 to 70 pax regional jets is deployed, SZB O&D volume to SIN, PEN, BKI, KCH, KBR, CGK, BKK, etc could be higher than KUL.

TR regional jets will likely developed to feed SQ connection to/from Australia, EU, etc like AF, LH, KL in EUR. Once TR reached this stage, MH could forget to return to EUR outside LHR, and will be hammered on AUS routes.

I don't believe QR has such restrictions in any of their lounges but doesn't mean they can't start. There are quite a few MH J pax at their SIN/BKK lounge as it is, but of course opening one at KUL would mean much more MH J pax. It appears that MAHB wants the lounge revenue to themselves now so there are no individual airline lounges. Maybe that's why PPL have to move to the main concourse instead of the C gates where most of their pax will depart from.

This is a major issue for the landlord to compete with tenants; landlord could choose the best location for itself. Due to monopoly mentality, service, choice and price is often not the best.
