    Haha look at the old TWU... sitting their rotting away and they still have no clue of what to do with it.

     

    The residents of TWU found a new use for the runway though, which is drag racing....

     

    A bit OT: Lots of dragstrips in the world are originally runways that are no longer used. Tawau and Bintulu should have nice dragstrips by now; KL should follow soon with a dragstrip in Sungai Besi.


  2. I took PAL in 1983 to MNL and continued to HNL and........can't remember how I end up in Philadelphia. :bad:

     

    We have photos of PAL B737 in KUL in 2005/2006.

     

    There are photos of PAL A319 in KUL in 2013

     

    So looks like they stopped their services here 3 times already. Now I wonder how their 4th try will fare. Anyway even without PAL there has always been flight between KUL and MNL operated by many other airlines.

    Actually, no. What I was referring to happened just a few years back, before the opening of the 3rd KUL runway.

     

    The BBC report from 1999 refers to a darker past, an era where the management coerced pilots to take less and less fuel for economic reason. Some captains followed the order, many didn't. Mostly on the B744 fleet so I wasn't directly affected then as I was a first officer on another fleet.By the time I become a captain in 2000 the management has been revamped and the issue was mostly settled.


  4. I've heard rumors that this tactic is also employed by some well-known carriers in this region a few years back. Of course, most likely it was just rumors as it was said bo be done by the competitors of the airline I was flying with back then.

     

    But what I've heard in real-life was that, after some holdings due to traffic, some aircraft reported getting low on fuel and asked either priority landing or diversion, of which ATC simply told them to divert.


  5. During the days when there really was a jungle in the middle of the satellite building, I was quietly hoping those scene from Jurassic Park become true; a T-rex and a few velociraptors will not look out of place in that little spot.

     

    Or otherwise, they could've just put a few phytons in there, with the occasional chickens and rats for the food supply. After all, phytons are native to the palm oil farms surrounding KLIA, feeding on the rats which in turn feeding on the fruits of the palm oil trees.


  6. The reason for the existence of the cabin crew is for safety purposes. The service part is really an afterthought. Any aircraft with 20 or more passenger must have a cabin crew, and that is the reason why there are so many 19 passenger airplanes around. The B737 has 4 main doors, therefore the minimum number of cabin crew is 4, to operate the doors in an emergency.

    Pilot will backtrack to the end of runway and make a 180 turn. Ideally you will, approaching the end of the runway, go as close as possible to the side and then make the turn. In this case looks like he went to the left side and then make a sharp right turn. Apparently he misjudged the position of the left main landing gear, he went too close and main landing gear departed the hard surface.

     

    This is a relatively very common occurrence with this type of turn. Contributing factor is the narrow runway which necessitates going close to the runway edge for the turn.
