  1. Not quite so nowadays - they are doing/trying a lot of so called 'secondary' Chinese cities out from BKI nowadays

I think they 'pioneered' Zhengzhou (CGO) not too long ago and it seem that Shanghai Airlines (FM) has jumped onto the bandwagon too nowadays - an indication route is lucrative ?

Then you get places like Changsha, Tianjin etc as well

Don't recall AirAsia ever 'testing' those routes before :)

Though admittedly a few of these, eg Wenzhou, have since been dropped I believe :)

i thought these few routes to the chinese cities are only chartered flights?

  2. Direct flights to Sabah's east coast airports (SDK and TWU) was one of Mdm Liew's first proposals after assuming the tourism portfolio, no ?

Direct flight yes..... but from Kuching? whats the strategy here? like I say, the growth in TWU in the past 4-5 years is entirely fueled by the arrival of chinese tourists heading to Semporna. So shouldn't the direct flight be targeting at this market instead?

Inevitably this brings up the issue of whether the airports can handle more flights. Sandakan airport terminal is relatively new and they have extended the runway before that. Tawau airport is old, but not that old either. Both airports lack terminal space and boarding gates. Tawau also need to rework the check-in/immigration counters if they want to handle more pax. AK might just start complaining if KLIA2 could be used as a reference in this case.

Moving forward, perhaps a small airport ala Kudat should be built in Semporna to take some of the load from Tawau airport?

    1) Sandakan airport currently handled about 950K pax annually with a capacity of 1.5 - 2 million pax a year, so there is room to grow further. However, the current runway length of 7000ft means it can't really handle flights beyond 3 hrs flying time.

    2) TWU has exploded this past few years with the influx of chinese tourists heading to Semporna. TWU is estimated to handle close to 1.5 mil by end of this year and the airport terminal and parking apron is in need of an upgrade. Its 8800ft runway is long enough to handle the demand.

    3) With Sabah Tourism Board estimate that close to 400K tourists (mainly chinese) visited Semporna last year, if all passed thru TWU (both departing n arriving), means close to 800K pax handled by TWU were actually going to Semporna. So maybe better off building a smaller ATR ready airport for Tawau instead of Semporna and renamed TWU to SMM haha........

  3.

luckily... or else this will caused a big hassle to the travel agents. i arrange one group to Sandakan earlier on normal days. it's hard enough to find suitable restaurant with possible advance booking for table and dishes.

just curious do Sandakan have enough tourist bus?

If u can find me the tourists, I'll find u the tour buses 😂😂

  4. I was told there was some load restriction in terms of check-in luggage limit, ie 15kg per pax.

and yes, the OD plane did BKI-SDK / SDK-BKI with empty load for this chartered arrangement.

On a separate note, CM said during a CNY open house that there is a delay in the runway extension project due to insufficient funding...... well i bet there will be another ground breaking ceremony V2.0 just before election day.

    cheers

  6. Wouldn't it be good if MH passed two or three aircraft to MASWings so that they can operate some of the KUL to East Malaysia flights? Although it is a branding exercise, it introduces MASWings to everyone who has not been to Sabah and Sarawak.

    cant agree more.

Maswings has been in operation for more than 10 years now, but operation wise it has not moved an inch forward in terms of coverage and route.

  7. The aerobridges were previously used at Subang Int'l Airport before they were moved to SDK.

The salvage from subang had been dismantled when they upgraded the terminal 2 yrs ago. They installed 2 new glass-wall type aerobridges as replacement, which is similar to those in use at BKI.

  8. Thanks for sharing bro. The terminal building does looks new. The aerobridge still looks old though. From the expansion project photo, it seems that they're extending the runway little bit and add one more taxiway. A"L' shape taxiway.

    yeah... 1200ft to be exact.
