  2. ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A 13-hour flight from San Francisco to Shanghai is no commuter hop, but the 262 passengers on a United Airlines flight were ready for that. Instead, they were stranded in Anchorage, Alaska, for two days.

Flight 857 diverted to the nearest airport — Anchorage — when several lavatories were found to be inoperable about three hours after the flight's 2 p.m. Sunday departure from San Francisco, United spokesman Charles Hobart said.

Passengers told the Anchorage Daily News they waited in their seats until 8 p.m. before they were allowed to deplane.

The airline handed out hotel and meal vouchers, but with only a handful of employees to handle the task, it took several hours, the newspaper reported.

"It was 10 or 11 p.m. before we had the meal vouchers," said passenger Chen Chang of Fremont, California. "Everything was closed."

Passenger Camille Chen said hotels wanted credit cards for check-in, and a number of passengers traveling back to China didn't have those.

United brought in another plane Monday, and passengers boarded, but that plane also had problems. Passengers finally took off Tuesday afternoon on a third Boeing 777.

United will be "fully refunding everyone's tickets," Hobart said. The airline was talking with passengers about additional compensation, he added.

"If we'd known we'd be here this long, we might have done some sightseeing," said Tammy Harmon of Cupertino, California., taking a look at Anchorage's blue skies and snow-covered Chugach Mountains.

  3. Here is my contribution of demo and aerobatic flights on the 1st public day. The weather and lighting are not favorable (as always during the last 3 SIN airshows I attended!)

  4. VN Airlines domestic flights use mostly A320-321 aircraft. They don't have seats for FAs at emergency exits. Many local passengers fly for the first time thanks to better price/time compared with trains, coaches during holidays and they are eager to "discover" the amenities of modern jetliners. Due to low average earnings of the Vietnamese people, the Ministry of transportation and M.of Finance which stipulate the fines are lenient for these violations. Operators are now battling to get punitive fines to cover the consequential operating loss.

Re. re-packing of emergency slides, VNA has to do it abroad especially in Singapore since there is no qualified/approved facility in-country.

  6. Soorox: It's a pity that you didn't stay in Saigon for a few days. It's always the best time from Xmas to Tet for spotting thanks to more air traffic, nice weather and the festive ambiance. So you flew from MEL to SGN on the A332 VN-A381, the brand new VNA aircraft delivered end November 2011 huh?

You are right on the A321 SkyTeam, VNA is ashamed of the current 330 SkyTeam's poor painting so they want to make it right this time. From reliable source, I think this A/C will be delivered sooner, probably late April.

  7. Yes, more after I go through the ton of raw photos. Any tips on mass output? The manual process is taking too much time.

Kwek: If you use Photoshop then I suggest to sort your photos of the same lighting into separate sub-folders. Then:

1/ take 1 photo in each sub-folder to process manually while recording the steps into 1 action.

2/ The action may include resize, watermark, save as a copy into a new destination folder then close the original file without saving.

3/ Take another photo in the same sub-folder and test with the above action without dialog boxes.

4/ If everything is Ok then use the Batch command in the File menu > Automate > Batch

5/ In the Batch dialog box, select the above action and the Source is folder

6/ Then choose the folder containing the photo you processed above as source folder

7/ Untick if necessary the box for Override Action "Save as"commands and finally click OK

If you complete the Batch dialog box correctly, PS will automatically process non-stop all the raw photos in this sub-folder to the same parameters as for the test photo.

Repeat the same steps for the other sub-folders, et voila` :yahoo:

  8. So, landings and take-offs mainly from the 07 runways ?

Pieter: This time of the year the monsoon wind changes direction till February, Use of RWY07R&L are predominant but ATC can change to RWY25 for easing workload whenever tailwind subsides since there is only ILS approach to RWY25.

  9. Chu' Huy,

You are on business visit to Singapore or on observer trip? I think you have to go to the locations on your own by bus or MRT.

Depending on the runways use (02 or 20) there are 2 easy locations to spot:

Landing RWY20, go to Changi Point Beach (Changi Beach). Use bus service No. 9, 19, 89, 89e, alight at Carpark 5 (Bus Stop No. B95081) along Nicoll Drive. Warning: don't take photos of the Changi airport buildings or the military facilities nearby.

Landing RWY02, go to Changi Business Park Changi by MRT to station Expo (CG1) walk about 10 minutes toward South Ave 3 and Changi South Street 1. There is a big park where you can easily take photos. Check the street map in the station or look for aircraft landing direction.

If you have time you browse through this topic for better information.

Inside the terminal 3 (if you flight VNA) go to the area with KOI pond (bể cá vàng) or go to T2 outdoor smoking area. Good luck

  10. VN-A379 is now delivered, just saw her in MEL today, operating VN781/780: Hope the inside looks good too!

Hi Soorox, I didn't know you live in Melbourne otherwise we could go spotting in MEL last week. I've tried one day going around MEL perimeter but the results are bad because of heat and backlit issue. I'm now at SYD and hope the weather to remain dry and sunny.

  11. Very nice and interesting pics, mates :clapping:

Greg: I especially like your photos of the T-28, the Swedish AF trainer and I find that you're very good of shooting portrait (The lady pilot in a Tiger Moth?)

Mir: Good to see your pics, you live in Australia or just a visit there? I love your merged photo of the T28. It reminds me of the defunct South Vietnam Air Force (VNAF) first combat planes, their T28 were equipped with 4 machine guns and racks for bombs and rockets. The Yak 52 is also good, Vietnam Air Force is still using this plane for training new pilots.

  12. FYI, Vietnam Airlines (VNA) has had a pseudo-LCC airline in 1995 which was Pacific Airlines now Jetstar Pacific Airlines (JPA). JPA shareholders are the Vietnamese STATE CAPITAL INVESTMENT CORPORATION (SCIC 66.82% shares transferred from VNA), QANTAS (27%) and SAIGON TOURIST (6.18%). Being a state-owned and subsidiary of VNA, JPA was saved from bankrupt in 2008-2009.

It's true that Vietnam has a huge potential for LCCs but it wil take some time and compromises to get Vietnamese passengers acquainted with small base fare + huge additional charges which make the fares not cheaper than VNA full-service flights.

There are 2 mistakes in the CAPA article:

1/ VNA's full fare Y return ticket SGN-HAN is US$240 and you can get it as low as $150 if booking online 1 month in advance for night flights.

2/ JPA is now issuing 100% electronic tickets with online check-in
