  1. Lol. I think we have lots to offer.

    Nasi Lemak & Teh Tarik.

    Hahahaha.

Is that so? Then why people are not coming in droves?

Those are just "peanuts", ok, maybe icing.. but where is the cake? The country needs to do something better than that to attract people, not just leisure travelers longing after nasi lemak among other things, but also investors, businessmen and etc. When that happens, naturally the aviation industry will grow.

  2. KLIA is quite a decent airport, but it's still underutilized after so many years..

What is there in Malaysia to attract people to come? It's not a commercial and financial hub like Singapore. It's not a tourist magnet like Thailand.

When they built KLIA, they thought airlines to make a beeline for them. How wrong is that.. Malaysia needs to think beyond airport to attract airlines. Airport is just an airport. It's just an infrastructure.

  3. I see your point. However, I believe that the reason MH cannot fill up a 772 is because of the lack of daily service, not in spite of. My observation is limited to Zurich though - MH used to fly 4x per week... too many empty seats, so reduce to 3x per week... it got worse, so in the end it was 0x per week.

For business people, as you mentioned, and also from my experience working in a company where we make about 1000 trips per year to asia-pacific, 4x per week is just not good enough and if they can't get a good share of this high margin business, then it is already difficult to make it work overall (2 main reasons why my colleagues don't fly MH was because firstly the low frequency, and secondly, poor connections out of KUL).

For Y pax, a major portion of European passengers are working people and families on holidays. I have a number of friends who could not book MH because they cannot get flights within the dates of their planned time off work. I mean, you get 2-3 weeks off per year and you want to go on holiday, but you can't maximise your holidays due to the flight schedules. One friend who works at a tour agency told me that it was almost impossible to sell MH as part of the package because of frequency. In the end, as I noticed on a lot of MH flights to/from ZRH, it is just full of retirees and university students who have time on their hands...

Look at emirates.. they did not tip toe into ZRH. They went daily.. then double daily.

Yalah, hard to maximize holidays/travel with MAS. From here in Perth, their frequency is just too low and connection is poor. So naturally it's not the preferred carrier for most people.

  4. Moving on, AK will be advertising the new A350s when it is delivered to them in few years time. How would MH brand the A330s? IFE isn't something new...besides that, all the premium airlines that operate the A333s has already installed that as well. Betters fares? I don't really think we can expect lower fares in the future as had been mentioned by the new CEO that as capacity is expected to pick up.

By the time AK gets their A350, MAS will already have a much refreshed fleet, one of the youngest in the region. So I believe MAS will still be attractive. Even with their tired old 737 and A330 now, they are still doing quite OK domestically and regionally.

By that time also, hopefully MAS will have had committed to buying 787/A350, if not they are just digging another hole for themselves.

  5. Yes, there will still be plenty of things to promote. Most people only look into the airfare. Some also consider the comfort and frills. Very few will bother about the type of aircraft.

The different planes mean more to the airlines than to customers due to different fuel efficiency, MTOW and what. Naturally most customers couldn't be bothered about these.

  6. MH's ticket is always more expensive than some of the world's tip top airlines with the associated higher cost. I don't see any reasons that MH's financial result is always not satisfactory as compare to SQ, EK, CX and etc. Let's not forget that, MH has a lower staff cost as compare to premium airlines like SQ , CX and etc. Having a A330s for the next 10-15 years or so will certainly not do any long term advantage to MH.

Actually I find MAS to be reasonably cheap. Each time I travel, I compare them with SQ, and each time they are cheaper by quite a significant margin.

  7. No lah, MH's demise is something that should not even be listed under the 'worry' section, let alone lose sleep over :)

Her immortality has withstood so many challenges during the little over half century of her existence, and see she is still around - smarties/m&m seats, snek-boks, BTP's and all :)

You think so? Even Malaysia can go broke the way things are run now once our petroleum dries up. MAS has been quite resilient but they are not out of the woods yet, can't afford to make too many mistakes.

  8. Their order for A333E is good for now, it's probably the best thing they can do to have brand new planes as early as next year, but yes, it's not good enough for the long run.

Last time Azran claimed that MAS was try to copycat Air Asia's order of A333 and A350. But no, it didn't happen. As to why, your guess is as good as mine (without inside info).

But with MAS's weak financial position, understandably they are quite risk aversive as mistakes can easily lead to their dismiss. Especially so with investments that involve huge sum of money. Still much uncertainties with the upcoming 787/A350.. Guess they are taking a wait and see approach for now until things become clearer.

Having said that, they can't wait and see for too long or they risk the same problem they are experiencing now repeating itself again, when their fleet will be technologically inferior (some say obsolete) when compared to their competitors and they don't have any new planes coming.

At some point, they will need to have the courage to take the plunge, take the risk and order those planes (hopefully sooner rather than later).

  9. Guess you can't fault them for buying the A333E. It's a safe and sensible decision for their current situation. Personally I look forward to their new planes next year. More reasons to fly with MAS back to Malaysia and the rest of the world.

Not ordering the 787/A350 is a different matter. They should also place order for them in the near future. Not doing so will cause headache in the longer term. So there should be further chapters coming in their WB renewal. Hope it won't be too long.

  10. They are getting brand new A333E in 2011. That's only next year! That's the best thing they could do at this time as their current fleet sorely needs to be replaced.

Of course, they will need to purchase 787/A350 for the longer term in the future.. But now they are playing safe. Understandably, considering their financial position, they can't afford to take too much risks. The A333E has proven itself to be reliable, it's tried and tested. The 787/A350, on the other hand, are not proven. They can turn out to be another blunder like the A380 and costing heaps of money.

  11. Are we talking about USD $2 bil or MYR 2 bil.? It seems like a lot of money for an LCCT. A sneak peek at our neighbour and Australia's jetstar terminals, they are nothing more than factory like tin sheds, in fact they are like warehouse outlets stores like DFO in Australia or Dressmart in NZ.

Yup, Malaysia's LCCT is one of the more luxurious ones.. Got free Wifi somemore. I used to use Jetstar's terminal in Avalon and Tiger's terminal in Melbourne Airport.. Oh dear..They were really unacceptable by Malaysian's standard. But they get the job done, that's it.
