  1. Most airports could build attached shopping mall and channel pax through but few did.

The school of thought of having gateway@klia2 is no difference from charging premium rate at level 2 of t1 car park.

Because they put a lot more duty free stores airside. This doesn't work here because Malaysians aren't heavy duty free shoppers.

  2. Airport is a node of transportation network; seamless transfer is supposed to be the key for growth. By adding non essential 100m shopping is still unnecessary.

If one look at shops at klia gateway; besides eatery, many are doing below expectations.

Airport's major source of revenue is retail. Even in Changi their revenue is mostly derived from retail. You want no retail fine, then cough up the PSC.

And are they though? I was there last week, and many of the shops are operating fine. Most of the shops that are closed are located post the escalators, which is fairly logical since people hardly ever go there.

  3. Max crashes took place in Indonesian and Ethiopian jurisdictions. Does FAA oversee them? MAVCOM will be up in arms if the FAA interfered with Malaysian aviation!

I'm talking about certification issues. Many other countries' regulation bodies put their trust in the FAA that they don't require in depth certification of new airplane models. But now that trust is broken because reports that the FAA's rushed certification of the MAX surfaced. Why? Because they need to promote Boeing to the world.

History have shown how this conflict of interest is wrong - the DC-10's cargo door issue for one, where McDonnell Douglas pleaded with the FAA not to issue an Airworthiness Directive regarding the cargo doors which could affect sales of the plane. It ended up with Turkish Airlines Flight 981 crashing in Paris, becoming the worst aviation disaster in the world at the time.

Businesses need a reduction in red tape not increase.

Businesses need regulations that protects consumers. Otherwise if they are allowed to run rampant they will maximize profits at the expense of the customer. MAVCOM can become the watchdog if managed properly.

Its being forced fed a shopping mall before check in that most people dislike. Why can't it be like klia or the old LCCT, where u don't need to go through a mall with multiple level changes?

Because they need the retail revenue in order to cover expenses. And again, I find myself being a broken record - it's not like you have to walk the length of Midvalley or One Utama. If my mother who isn't exactly the world's fittest person can traverse the airport with no fuss, I don't see why others should, especially the young ones!

Many here might like the cowshed that is the LCCT, but I certainly don't, especially considering the experience I had with AK stranding my travel party for 6 hours. In fact, I'm pretty sure that even if MAHB went ahead with building an enlarged cowshed LCCT, many here would still find things to complain about!

    Anyways, on another note...

Is this for real? Of all the things that needs to be done, these people are worried about the bloody name? ::80::

  4. My point is that airport tax is only a small proportion of MAHB's total revenue - you were using it as if the airport tax levied should be an indicator of airport quality of service.

I think that the complaint is not about the shopping mall but being forced to walk through it before arriving at the check in counters. E.g. Changi T2 shopping mall is in the basement - you have to make a conscious effort to go there and not just pass by on the way to check in. klia2's shopping mall could be better located!

I've walked up and down the shopping mall with luggage. I honestly don't see what the big fuss is about. Again, as I've said a million times before, it's not like you have to walk the length of Midvalley or One Utama.

MAVCOM is a redundant body set up to provide employment for the previous BN government's cronies. They are a bunch of amateurs. They should be disbanded and all aviation matters should revert to CAAM.

No it's not. CAAM should focus solely on maintaining air safety, and MAVCOM should be focusing on promoting aviation commerce.

In fact, if the US does the same, they could have avoided the MAX fiasco since the FAA's dual mandate of promoting aviation commerce & maintaining air safety is a conflict of interest.

  5. Ive checked with the flight attendants yesterday from KUL SIN KUL sector and so far they serve everyone snacks and drinks. No discrimination.

That's because the new ticket policy hasn't fully applied yet. Many are flying on tickets booked prior to the new policy.

    Utter nonsense.

How is that nonsense? Sounds perfectly logical to me, kind of like how smoking seats were assigned when smoking was allowed on planes.

  6. Arabs royalty/sovereign wealth management is shrewd and return is higher than khazanah. If me3 is not making profit, dropped in oil price would have revealed.

Indeed. Just look at EY. EK meanwhile is cancelling plane orders left & right.

    Shrewd.

  7. LHR is no benchmark to follow. Unless, of course, you like astronomical taxes and terrible value.

And let's not delude ourselves into thinking KLIA can be a "premier" airport. It never was and is unlikely to be one anytime soon. The unfortunate fact remains - KUL doesn't have the traffic, yields and resources to compete with SIN. Unless the government is going to tax the living daylight out of each and every traveller (something which you yourself are an opponent of), we can stop dreaming about having the world's largest man-made waterfall in the region's "premier" aviation hub. What some people are forgetting is Jewel Changi is also intended to be a destination for Singaporeans. How many people live within a reasonable radius of KLIA to actually consider going there just for fun?

Sure, certain things can be improved without breaking the bank, like toilets and managing efficiency, but if we're going to turn the fantasies of some into reality, are we ready to pay the price?

Indeed. One can dream big but if one isn't willing to pay for the dream to become a reality, then one should stop dreaming.

The airport fan in me always wants KLIA to have its own waterfall and dome and whatnot and be the most bombastic airport out there.

While the airport professional in me can only smile while reading comments on MW :)

  8. The problems with the MAX is fixable. And it will be fixable. So no rush for MAS to think about switching etc etc.

Again, it boils down to the fact that of the 350 aircraft flying thousands of flights daily, only 2 of them crashed. If there's anything inherently wrong with the aircraft, we'd be seeing more crashes.

  9. Any option to convert them to NGs instead? To replace about of dozen older 738s. Thats mabs most reliable workhorse compared to the 330s and 380s constantly having small parts broken lol. But Not sure when the NG production is going to end though.

Boeing isn't taking new NG orders if I'm not mistaken.

  10.

Mavcom: Time for airlines to go beyond code-sharing, alliances

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): It is about time airline companies such as Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) go beyond code-sharing or alliances and look into regional tie-up to survive in the highly competitive and capital-intensive industry.

    Problem is - with whom?

Garuda? Most definitely not, the Indonesian wouldn't want Malaysian hands to mix with their own flag carrier.

    Singapore? Why would they bother?

    Thai? Same thing.

    Royal Brunei? What for?

  11. I am not so sure - many cities thought they could close down old airports when they built new ones but they never did. E.g. KUL/SZB, NRT/HND, even land scarce Singapore kept Paya Lebar after Changi opened.

I guess it will depend on how quick thinking the government is....

    • NRT/HND - adequate demand.
    • Paya Lebar/Changi - not relevant, considering Paya Lebar is now a military airbase. You can argue about Seletar, but even then the traffic into XSP is inconsequential compared to SIN.
    • KUL/SZB - SZB's traffic is inconsequential, compared to KUL. Same issue with XSP.

In the case of Kulim & Penang, the demand is just not there so Kulim will definitely end up as a white elephant. Either expand Penang, or build Kulim. You can't have both.

  12. Honestly, there's no reason for Kulim airport unless it works as a replacement for PEN. Anything else will not make any logic whatsoever, and there's simply no excuse to keep PEN open if Kulim Airport is to be developed

Given that the development is starting from scratch, connections to Penang like train lines etc can be built to connect Kulim to the island. If one argues about distance I'd say it's bull - given that the distance of the proposed airport location in Kuala Muda to Bayan Lepas is almost similar to KL-KUL, and that didn't stop KUL in the least bit. If they do it in Kulim proper instead of Kuala Muda, even better as the distance would be much less.

Close down PEN, and repurpose the airport land for something else, a larger industrial estate or affordable housing, I don't know. But to develop Kulim and still keep Penang open is simply STUPID.

  13. Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohamad threatens to boycott EU fighter jets over palm oil

    Published: 6:38pm, 24 Mar, 2019

    • In the sharpest response yet on EU plans to curb palm oil use, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said the nation may consider buying new jets from China instead of European arms companies
    • But the premier said he was not “declaring war” on the EU as his country needed goods from the bloc

    https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/southeast-asia/article/3003055/malaysian-leader-mahathir-mohamad-threatens-boycott-eu

    1) As if the Europeans are shaking in their boots. Plenty of other countries with more substantial defence budgets are knocking at their door.

    2) As if China wants to entertain Mahathir after his frankly humiliating attempts at antagonizing the Mainlanders.

Typical Mahathir bully MO. No wonder Malaysia was in the doldrums, diplomatically during his 22 year reign. And now he's going back to the old days.

  14. If i remember correctly, this is somewhere near 'Weather Station' during those good old times

Yes, the weather station is further up the road, just before the guard house to enter the airport perimeter (thanks to klia2 being constructed).

was a bit surprised that the deck was build outside the airport terminal, actually i was expecting them to build it at the airport terminal to benefit more people especially passengers..

They need to alleviate the problem of people hanging out near the threshold of 32L to watch the planes fly above them. I remember driving through Jalan Pekeliling & reaching that area the line of cars parked there were a lot. I don't recall that place being busy a few years back.

  15. According to rumours mill; t* is in talk to take a minority stake with management control.

Piratization is here again! And I think he'll have to take it to atone for his sins of supporting Bossku prior to the elections. Probably even pay a premium.

MH will end up like FAX - dead as a doornail. Great!
