  1. The demise of KUL/EWR was destined when first launch and never been profitable;

    - 772 could not carry profitable load between DXB/EWR. MH tried to minimize losses by having morning departure from EWR and arrive KUL late at night i.e. not convenient for transit pax. SQ arrive EWR in the morning, depart in the evening and arrive SIN in the morning.

    - Assigned one aircraft on this route i.e. 3 flights/week.

    - Didn’t code share with other airline at DXB to serve the Middle East market.

    - Apparently, 772 was flown to EWR to be different from others.

    KUL/LAX has never been profitable either :(

    :drinks:

    FYI, had the opportunity to fly MH to EWR when it was via DXB ( circa. 1999 and pre EK JFK service and b4 9/11); was informed by MH crew and particularly by DXB agents, the load was really good and there's good demand. Perhaps it was that short time that MH did make money to EWR ; especially being the only carrier to offer the excellent 5 star service between Mid East and US East Coast. Mind u GCCL and EY was almost full then.

  2. I'm not surprised.

    It's rather strange that EWR is out; if one considers: -

    •
    • EWR has good popualtion base , slightly more than LON and not forgetting it could have been a gateway / hub to the East Coast of more than 100 million population ( that is if the hub and spoke really works beyond EWR to IAD / YYZ / ORD and many more.)
    • Not forgetting the above has one of the highest middle income groups in the world.
    • NYC and New Jersey area has the highest Malaysian Population and most of them are Executives with decent pay and definately can afford to fly home at least once a year.
    • That it is one of the main financial centre's in the world with most of the funds are most likely may have transacted via NY. Wouldn't regular air services would help international trade and finance to Malaysia? ZRH is already out; what's next?

    However, on the otherside, the failure of this route .....

    •
    • Stiff competition from Middle East Carriers and the Neightbour down south.
    • Irregular frequencies and used to have irregular schedules of flights, created great inconveniences ; particularly to Business Community.
    • MH 772 may be too big for the route under current Economic Slowdown; Perhaps , 332 / 763 / 764 would have been perfect.
    • Flying via Secondary cities ( ARN) does not give good fifth freedom volume and yield.
    • High operating costs for such minimal ( 2 - 3 weekly ) flights on longhaul flights would be a real challenge. Wonder how does MH perform on the EZE route?
    • Too long flight, difficult to promote exotic tropical holiday ; when Mexico , Carribean is just 3-4 hours away.

    As a consequence to this decision , the one down south will gain ( just like ZRH ) . Won't be surprise if daily A345 is resumed and 388 services being launched to JFK.

    The argument of "connecting" via AMS or LAX for NYC ; is not attractive at this moment as ..

    Would translate to at least 2 hours extra for the hassle of connecting. Would rather take the nonstop 345 from down south and overall travelling time still reduced; despite 2 hours for connection down there.

    Frequent Flyer is not properly streamline with the "partner" airlines ; No enrich Tier Bonus

    In the end ; it is sad to c the Wau flying away from another major airport gateway ( although it is just EWR and not JFK).

  3. So there is light at the end of the tunnel. See? You are all so quick to put down Enrich.

    Indeed there's a light at the end of tunnel; but u need to beg first! Had enjoyed free upgrades and companion redemptions. But need to always check that the right amount of miles are credited / debited most of the times.

  4. Hehehehe! Or they cud go the AK way and have 800 black leather seats! :rolleyes:

    ... yeah and knowing them ; don't sell the "middle seat" at one of the cabins and you've got yourself Business Class / Econnomy+ ; good to put govenrment offices on duty travel!.... hey ... after all is about maximising profits and make money = Low Cost Value Carrier.

  5. If MH is proud to their Skytrax rating; then they should specifically looked into the Best Airline Category at least in detailed ( not to mentioned other detailed categories) ..... which clearly reflects that they have dropped to 9th place this time from 6th previously....mind u they used to be in top 5 most of the time ( circa. 1992 - 2003). <_<

    So, nothing to be boosting around.... but they should see it as an increased dissatifaction of MH service and others have better products and services.

    As said several times by me and others.... wake up MAS! Do something much better! We know u can.

    Having best crew is good but their commitment will be affected severly when supporting hardware and facilities are below par!

  6. Although MH has recaptured the "usual award" ; overall, if one sees other details and categories, MH is now far behind then others and has dropped considerabily. One fine example, just look at the present ranking of Best Overall Ranking of MH this year and compare them with last year. ... Not forgetting 10 - 15 years ago ... MH used to be top 3 in First Class and Business Class and top 5 in Economy. My dear MH management ... better wake up and do something . <_<

  7. But based from what i heard is there is 50% chances for MAS 737-800s getting IFE now because SIA's A330 is pulling MH costemers for its features .If MAS wants back their pax MAS has to do somethin inovative and soon.I also heard that Brand new From Airbus, A330-300's are coming to replace the current 330's end of this year.According to them Golden Club Class will have the 777 n 747 bizz seats and in Economy class will have ptv or presonal IFE .The orders has not been made public because MAS wants it to make a surprise to the costemers which allways had looked down on MAS for some time.I m not sure of this information but its been runing around .So could any 1 please clear the doubt if it is true ?But i am not sure of the A330-200s caus according the them also the lease contract is going to finish or somethin.The leased 737-800 is for 5 or 6 years .

    Regards,

    Haansel

    As a regular MH full paying business passenger; It better be true! .... indeed amongst my business circle; the number of businessmen leaving MH for another carrier ( for Business and Leisure) is increasing... and I'm one of them that seriously thinking of doing the same. To All MH Management reading this..... better take action!

  8. Any suggestion on how IJ should run MH?

    Improve product offerings ASAP ! Compare with SQ / CX / EK / EY .... as they are your most direct competitor ; no point of comparing European / American carriers.

    Just like Proton must be comparable to Toyota / Honda / Kia in Malaysia - ASEAN region.... not GM/ Chysler / Lincoln that are being sold in the states!

  9. Given the small parameters in which IJ can move about, I reckon he has done a fantastic job, proving that profitability is possible in MH. It's just that the profits so far has yet to balance up the losses in the past years.

    I'd say he deserves a pat in the back.

    IMHO, a good pat in the back for a service industry CEO's ( including Airlines and Hotels) would be the Abilitiy to have an excellent product whilist making good finanncial returns ... yes it is not easy !;

    Good P&L , with compromised standards does not deserve a star.

  10. It's all making sense now... Toyota, not Mercedes. All that, and the LCC-esque seats and meals fit nicely into the idea of aiming to be the Toyota of the airline industry. Would we be seeing the removal of First Class soon? Coz F class is more like Lexus/Benz than Toyota.

    As for serving porridge instead of Lamb Biryani, was this really the feedback from passengers...cos Chinese would at most take porridge for breakfast, and not for all meals... I hope this isn't another one of those "93% love our snackboxes" thingy.

    I disagee with IJ's statement; Toyota is a brand that is consistently being enriched ( with increasing superior products @ more affordable prices ) to... sooner or later be a BMW or Mercedes. I think our MH is something worse then a proton ; even SKoda is far better thesedays! :-( big dissapointment !

  11. The tail is not to be blamed...the logo is indeed smaller...on the 734 - it is larger. Put the two side by side and you'll see..it's obvious.

    Now why can't MH get this relatively small thing correct? Reminds me of the tiny MH stickers that was put on the A380 when it visited KUL, as well as the smallish titles on the present A330.

    Lack of consistency perhaps? MH 332 & MH 333 are also similar IMHO, the "Malaysia" titles does not looked proportionately right either. They've should have been consistent like the ones of MH 772 , MH D10 and MH AB3 - where "malaysia" title was placed between exit 2 and 3.

  12. AIG To Sell ILFC To Investors

    November 23, 2008

    International Lease Finance Corporation, the plane-leasing business owned by insurer American International Group, will be sold to a group of investors and ILFC's management, Bloomberg reported on Saturday.

    ILFC founder and chief executive Steven Udvar-Hazy told the news agency in an interview that the deal would close early next year.

    AIG, which suffered major losses on mortgage derivatives, is selling assets to repay a loan from the Federal Reserve. The outlook for ILFC has been clouded for months by the predicament of AIG.

    The plane lessor relied on AIG's blue-chip credit rating for access to capital to buy planes. But when AIG's rating took a hit in September, ILFC was locked out of the debt market.

    Bloomberg cited Udvar-Hazy as suggesting the unit had a value of about USD$10 billion. :blink:

    But the investors were not identified.

    (Reuters)

    Perhaps PMB can buy ...

  13. Germany have about 82 million population and US$3,297,000 million GDP. LH have only two hubs to serve the whole Germany and EU.

    Malaysia population and GDP is 27 million and US$181,000 million respectively but every states wanted to have a hub and direct flights.

    Until the gomen learn how to allocate and operate resources efficiently, hard to find the country is competitive globally.

    :drinks:

    Totally Agreed 110% !

  14. so you say it is justified to steal airline property on the basis that they downgraded equipment? its not cheating man, they after all got you from A to B.

    Please note that I have never justified that stealing is okay. And for some people , paying extra is not just merely getting from one point to another; but to ensure that the journey itself is part and parcel of the holiday / business ! ;

    Even if an aircraft is downgraded for any reasons or whatsoever, some token of compensation by means of Frequent Flyer Points or vouchers would be more appreciated. After all, it's about preserving values and duty of care as contractually entrusted.

  15. Please note I am not accusing anyone but a reminder, call it "offloading" or just a souvenir it is still STEALING! Blankets, pillow etc are on the plane for everyone. Every time someone "offloads" things it adds to the cost of the airline who will pass the cost back to the passengers with higher fares.

    Taking lifejackets could mean life or death to some in an emergency. Think about it!

    Totally agreed. But ; charging excessive fares and surcharges whilist reducing product offerings is " C H E A T I N G" ! Including: -

    Local business fares are up and meals reduced from hot savories to just cold sandwiches;

    Downgrading from 772 / 744 flights to A332 / A333 ; happened to me on Club ticket! The club seats differs tremendously!;

    Doesn't the above are similar to "stealing" from passengers?
