Forty four people have been killed after a passenger jet crashed in heavy fog and burst into flames on a main road in north-west Russia.

The Tu-134 plane, owned by RusAir, was on its way from Moscow to the city of Petrozavodsk when it crashed in bad weather.

Russia's Emergencies Ministry said the plane went down on its final approach at the airport, hitting the ground a mile short of the runway, breaking apart and bursting into flames.
