Airport chemical scare

Recommended Posts

Kota Kinabalu: FIREMEN had to be called in when an unlabelled bottle containing suspected chemical broke and emitted a foul odour, alarming workers at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) Terminal 2, late Thursday.

Sabah Fire Operations Officer (Training Division), Nor Arrifin Kamari, said they received a distress call at 6.29pm from airport staff about the odour which caused much anxiety among airport users as well as staff.

A special unit was sent there and found a bag inside the toilet, he said, adding one of 10 bottles in the bag had broken. A Customs officer said the bag has yet to reach their section.

It was learnt that the owner of the bag had flown in from Macau on an AirAsia flight and AirAsia staff had followed the owner who had hastened with the bag into the toilet. However, they could not locate the man.

Firemen, with gas masks on, took about an hour to clear the area, placing the bottles inside a big yellow container (pic) before whisking it away on their truck.

Reminds me of an incident recently in Tawau. I was at the PC Fair booth early and found a round container but don't know what was inside. I thought of tossing it into the garbage bin. Before the fair started this security guard came over and just took the container away. I guess it's his lunch box and I'd always thought what would happen if I had toss it away then. :p
