  1. Nice pics SV. HK is really hazy all year round. From the window outward pic, it appears that were sitting right on top of the central fuel tanks. sad.gif

    Congrats for snapping B-HOY.

As for Guangdong, its certainly looks cleaner than previously. Very metropolitan, in fact better than Taipei city.

There is also a SYS memorial in Toronto, Canada (unbelievable right?).

  2. It does sink. However, they have a jack system build underneath the terminal building to compensate this. The system is computer controlled and is adjusted on weekly basis.

The Japanese are so confident about this that they are now building a second rwy. Once completed, KIX will have 2 rwys: 1 for t.o. and the other for landing. The 2nd rwy will be linked by 2 bridges to the original KIX "island".

KIX is an engineering feat in itself and was feature on Discovery Channel's super-structures considering that it was built right in middle of Japan's typhoon alley, on the Pacific ring of fire.

  3. The best source is from the investigative jurisdiction country. In this case, Taiwan's Aviation Safety Council. CI settled the lawsuits from all victims for an undisclosed sum, news report stated CI confirmed that the sum is higher than the amount SIA finally settled in those US class-action litigation for the SQ006 accident.

The actual report are here (huge files) in it you can read about the break-up sequence, salvage, evidence tracing, injury profile of victims, etc:

Interestingly, a made for local TV investigative documentary highlighted several theories: Penghu islands (Pescadores) are situated exactly 180deg opposite of Bermuda triangle.

  4. Denny, which internet auction is this ? What is the website ?

This is a Taiwanese one, so its for flights originating in TPE/KHH, www.eztravel.com.tw

Click on menu, domestic/int'l airticket; local/overseas hotel; local/overseas tour.

This is not a travel agency though it sounds like one. Their biz model is like this: sign contract with airlines and tour agencies. They must sell certain quotas, otherwise they have to pay penalty. So the price is really low compared to tour agencies. Eztravel provides online auction via Oracle ERP system. The process is like this:

For e.g., int'l airticket: click destination -> choose date -> results will show auction price, success rate of getting this (real-time data), terms & conditions (L,Q,M class) -> choose price -> pay online/by ATM -> download ticket ref no./download eticket w/in 24hr.

This biz model can also be seen in Japan.

  5. Saw the launch on cable news last night. First flight from TPE-FUK this Saturday.

    Passengers will get these:

Inflight biscuits in HK shape and pink color.

    Meals feature HK fishcake, etc.

    Headrests have HK logo.

    F/A apron is pink.

Baggage tags = pink and HK logo.

Toilet rolls w/ HK logo = passengers will steal this for sure.

    A specially-arranged on-board music featuring HK's theme song.

Explanation about a/c's livery (from front to back):

Daniel (Kitty's bf) is blue color, pilot.

    Kitty (pink) is F/A.

3 characters at the back: Kitty's bro, ma and pa.

Mouse on engines: no idea where this one came from?

  6. Media con just over, you can see some guests/journalists mingling inside the hangar. And yes, several people are wearing bright pink.

The market is aimed at Taiwanese, recent market figures suggest that it is cheaper to take tour overseas instead of locally in Taiwan. Japan is on top of favorite destination in far east, only a short 3hr flight.

  7. Pieter:

Tickets from TPE-KUL range from 450NLG to 600NLG (8400NTD to 11000NTD) on internet auction. 3days advanced payment required, if go to shop directly 24hr advanced payment may be accepted if tickets are available.

Tickets from TPE-HKG range from 250NLG onwards (4300NTD - 11000NTD) depending on dep time.

Hotels e.g.: Hyatt (near 101 Tower is 7500NTD or about 500NLG); Westin about 4500NTD.; Le Meridien (2500NTD). Most tourists like Hyatt because of tower.

  8. Still checking on the AMS-HKG flights on both KL/CX; the former fully booked on 28oct and no news yet on CX  sad.gif : , than flying along with S V and gf on MH to KUL on 30oct; will let you guys know ASAP...

Pieter: Maybe re-route from AMS-TPE, from TPE-HKG. KLM Asia flies here, same with CI. TPE-HKG is easy, because there is at least 1 flight departing every hour, and in every 40mins during morning rush-hour. I'm based near RCPO (ROCAF base) and can travel to TPE.

  9. I encountered this phenomenon several times. 2 years ago on CX 744 from TPE-NRT. The vibration came from beneath us a short while after take-off.

After it stopped, the pilot announced on the PA that it was due to leaving the landing-gears for a longer time-period before retracting them. Reason: abnormal temperatures in the main-gears. Its a good practice on CX's part to keep us informed about what's going on.

I experienced this again last week on EVA's 744 YVR-TPE, the vibration is also felt in the front section of EVA Air's older 744 too, as Pieter had pointed out.

  10. Its a brain-drain thing...nothing new to this phenomenon, which started in 1980s. Singapore, with its low birth rate, requires human resources to fuel its economy.

Same situation in Far East as well, China is actively "draining" IC/PCB/semiconductor design & test engineers (better trained) from Taiwan and Silicon Valley, and even as culturally diverse as India.

If Malaysia wants to compete internationally, its govt must do something more effective to keep its human resources that are being attracted by overseas prospects.

  11. Ben:

Thanks for info. Just discovered that AXIS is Swedish co. I would have thought Taiwanese co. are the usual suspects as makers these kind of stuff. Most CMOS chips (for Sony, Nikon, Fuji) are made by Taiwanese OEM/ODMs.

FYI, the face-recognition CCTV system used by London Underground is stored in a central facility with 1 petabyte capacity (1,000,000,000,000,000 byte or 10 to the power of 15). The software's deduction is so good that it is accepted by the court as evidence in U.K. anti-terrorist trials.
