Happy 40th birthday Boeing B747, truly the rightful and only Queen of the Skies!
If I were to choose my most memorable B747 aircraft, it would have to be Thai Airway's 'Royal Barge' B747-400 HS-TGO. I still recalled that I had taken a morning off to do some aircraft spotting in the midst of my 'A' Levels - while all my friends were busy studying and my parents expected me to - and was simply awestruck when I saw her land and taxi in to park at gate C20. By sheer coincidence or karma, I met her again while spotting just before enlistment into National Service, and again during my first 'book-out'. It was a pity that she was also one of the first to be repainted in Thai Airway's new corporate livery.
I rarely make an effort to collect postcards, but a friend of mine passed me this postcard after learning how smitten I was with the Royal Barge. The back of the postcard details the reasons for this special livery (note that actually 2 B744s exist in this livery):-
In celebration of His Majesty the King's 6th-cycle birthday, Thai Airways International has spectacularly adorned one of its Boeing B747-400s with a larger than life-size painting of Suphannahong, the famed Royal Barge which received " The World Ship Trust Maritime Heritage Award" in 1992. This unique aircraft will now serve as Tourism Envoy for "Amazing Thailand" as it takes off into the millenium and flies the world throughout the Year 2000"
Sri Ubon shows off the classy Thai livery as it was being pushed back for an afternoon departure at Bangkok Don Muang airport.
Cathay's Asia's World City B-HOY, otherwise also known as 'Green Alligator', never fail to cause much excitement at the viewing mall whenever she makes a visit as CX713 from Hong Kong via Bangkok.
I was truly amazed by how soft the landing was when I first flew on a B747 (Alitalia B742), and 9V-SPP demonstrates how this feat is performed as she tip-toes into Changi on an early morning arrival.
The Boeing B747 is truly a head-turner everywhere!
With its cavernous cargo hold and the ability to carry out-sized items, the B747 had found service with many cargo operators worldwide, such as Great Wall Airlines seen here returning from a pre-delivery test flight and still wearing its Singapore registration.
Bathed in golden evening light, 9V-SPR is seen on short finals as SQ286 from AKL.

Getting into the festive spirit of things, TNT sent their 'kumquat' B744F instead of the usual ones with Emirates Cargo livery.

No chance of using public transport?Is it possible to rent bikes near the airport?
Yes, it can be easily accessed by taking the MRT to Expo station (one stop from Changi Airport station), followed by a leisurely 10-15min walk to the spot. Not sure about bike rental facilities though.

Operating TOM955 from Perth this afternoon was this G-OOBE, B757-200. It has First Choice Airways titles but operated under the ThomsonFly Group and has Starquest Expeditions titles!
After a very long period of time, SQ decided to finally paint a second B744 in the awesome new colours featuring the huge titles and tail logo last month. 9V-SMU is currently the oldest B744 in SQ's fleet and is also the 1000th B747 to be built.

Mega Upsize by China Eastern to a A346 yesterday afternoon (23/1/09). Still patiently waiting to photograph World Expo 2010 in the same excellent afternoon light
This BBJ is painted in what looks like a grayscale version of the Boeing Dreamliner livery! I think it wouldn't make much of a difference if I had shot it in Black/White mode instead.
Looking classy is this Bombardier Global Express D-ADNB belonging to DaimlerChysler Aviation on a positioning flight from Seletar Airport.

Meanwhile A6-COM also went out for a short test flight and returned in gorgeous evening light!

It was a rather fruitful session yesterday morning at the soon-to-be renovated viewing mall at Terminal 1 as most of the more interesting movements were parked at the visible gates.
Thai A345 HS-TLB at Gate D34 as a SQ 77W 9V-SWR is being towed across. It had been ages since I had the chance to admire this 4 holer from the comfort of the viewing mall since it always get an outlying gate C24 whenever a A345 is scheduled.
The late morning AK123 flight was operated by AFW. The red colour exposed part of the fuselage near the wing root looks very striking!
No Santa Claus from India but this Kathakali Dancer from Kerala would have to do

Today's weather was the best we ever had in a very long while. Of course, it goes without saying that good weather attracts good subjects too!
Starting off today's list of subjects is this Jetstar A320 VH-VQD in new large titles. It has been operating JQ109 from Perth daily for the past week, and had been delayed from its usual 6am arrival to 9am this morning.
Now a rather regular visitor to Changi, An-26 RP-C2639 is photographed operating a short hop from Batam under a NV flight code. This aircraft carries additional Batam Logistics and interisland airlines markings as well.
Unbelievably clean, immaculate and shiny B762 V8-MHB from Brunei Royal Flight.
I was literally over the moon when Sriwijaya Air B734 PK-CJU decided to make an unexpected appearance as SJ104 from Jakarta.
Specially for Pieter with this KLM B744F PH-CKD operating KL163 into Changi at noon.
Ever wondered how long a A346 is? There's probably enough blank space on HS-TND to paint full Star Alliance titles too! On a side note, it is heartening to see Thai's loads starting to pick up again after the recent crisis and hope that they would eventually revert back to their original number of flights and resume sending in their A345s and A346s here regularly.
'Amazing' is truly the word to describe today's movements and weather.
China Eastern also obliged by sending in a A332 B-6099 instead of the usual A300-600R on the afternoon flight from PVG.

Ending off today's spotting is a gleaming Etihad B77W A6-ETB with additional 'From Abu Dhabi to the World' titles at the front.

A delay from its usual 2+pm arrival to 4pm yielded this totally unexpected special today
KC, Xu Yong and me were totally over the moon with this rather elusive Taiwanese special. 
Meanwhile this usual Xiamen B737-700 decided to adopt a 'Russian'-style look with a white radome

Speaking of books, I also highly recommend this book written by Joe Sutter himself on the B747 programme. It is an interesting read that contains many unique viewpoints which are not mentioned in other B747 books.
