"When we buy Boeing planes we are turning MAS into a competitive airline. When other airlines have dreamliners, we must also have dreamliners."

    Isn't that a dejavu? Hahahahahaha.

I really pity PB. I truly am. This is truly a joke. It's like after all the painful hard works, Mueller's 12 pillars etc, that recently resulted in a few quarters of single digit (in mil) operating profits, somebody decided to Ok now we should buy more plane now now now. Market research/study all later can kawtim.

Our only hope now is that the whole cirque du soleil will not get reelected. PERIOD.

  2.

    The Star's report:

    http://www.thestar.com.my/business/business-news/2017/09/14/mas-opts-for-dreamliner/

    Some points of interest:

“There are nine different very long-distance routes that we are looking at right now, and certainly the west coast of the US and as far as New York. We will be assessing and investigating as to the market size. We are also looking at Amsterdam, Paris, and expansion into Japan and South Korea,” Malaysia Airlines managing director and chief executive officer Peter Bellew told Malaysian journalists in Washington.
However, he added that “it is important to remember that all these routes lost a lot of money for Malaysia Airlines in the past. I don’t want to repeat that. This aircraft (B787) has very strong economics, but we need to get partnerships in place to fill the planes from new destinations with attractive yields. With our new reservation system, we have a real chance of selling connecting traffic on our own, and easily on to our partner networks for the fist time in a simple way,” Bellew said.

PB's answer is weird. Normally an aircraft is purchased around a plan but this one sounds like a plan has to be made around the aircraft purchase.

I do hope he is not leaving the ship soon citing "family" as an excuse.

This The Star article now convinces me that this purchase is political.

And what happened to MH's previous political purchase? Yes, it was a mistake and they are still struggling to get rid of the 6 A380s.

  3. 787-9 is an ultra long range aircraft. This is the aircraft type that UA flies to SIN from SFO non stop (8,433 miles), BA flies to KUL and SCL and the aircraft that QF will use on its jaw dropping PER-LHR (9,010 miles) next March. MH better be having a suitable destination to warrant the purchase of the 8 frames. I would imagine a reopening of KUL-CDG (but my MH spies revealed that CDG was dropped previously because it was too expensive to operate to/from) or KUL-AMS (makes more sense) and that's about it. KUL-LAX does not make business sense as even if the aircraft has the range, MH will not be able to operate it profitably. Another possible theory is that the A350's tenure may not be long in MH's fleet and the 6 aircraft will leave the fleet as soon as the first lease term expires. Hence these 8 frames will be used on KUL-LHR too (there is an ongoing rumour among my MH spies that says the 6 leased A350 may be cancelled yawl!) This is the only possibility/theory that I could see as plausible under MH's current circumstances.

Trivia: 787-9 is my current favourite aircraft. Flown it on 10 sectors so far, all 10 with BA between LHR and KUL (1F, 3J, 3W and 3Y) and had 1 pending booking in a few weeks' time i.e. AF to CDG. I think it has the perfect size for me, very modern and comfortable (had my 1st ever no. 2 experience onboard a 787-9, this is still my only no. 2 experience on an aircraft ever) and look so aesthetically pleasing to the eyes.

  4. I am saddened by this news that MH is back to purchasing aircraft they don't need or even planned. They even have yet to get rid of the 6 A380s. And they already identified surplus A350 from its 6 lease having nowhere to fly them apart from LHR. Operating a small fleet of 6 A350 and 8 787 does not make any good business sense at all. Good Lord.

I imagined Bellew would be devastated as we saw how extra careful he was when planning the fleet and what they exactly want (i.e. the second hand A333s). Out of sudden, boom. 8 brand new 787.

Is this also part of the pre election ploy? Jeez!

I am praying it will be just a Letter of Intent and nothing more.

  5. From the MH Rumour Department:

MH sent an A380 to BKK yesterday. Flight MH774/775 were cancelled and transferred to flight MH780/781. First deployment of our A380 to BKK.

Last weekend on Saturday and Sunday, an A380 was sent to HKG to operate flight MH72/73.

MH is in acute shortage of a more suitable widebody aircraft.

  6. Share the joy with some pictures please :D

Attached. If only I decided to bring along my good camera, it would have been a proper trip report for the forum.

Were you a loyal BA flyer? What's your status? So nice...wish I had such luck!

Yes I am now, with lots of Avios points. Status remains status quo. You can see BA is climbing the chart in my FlightMemory Top 10 airlines. Currently ranked 4th.

I got one a few weeks back from J to F from HKG-LHR - and i was told WHY i got it. Sometimes they don't tell you and you're scratching your head - just take it for what it is and enjoy, because there is no way to predict, nor influence it with BA.

Cheers to that Suzie! I am sure you were properly dressed for the occasion.

Do you still get amenity kits as an op-up? ;)

Yes. The F amenity bag, PJ and slippers. All tied in white ribbon. It was the first thing the crew gave me as I settled on my new seat.

Ah. The great red beep when boarding (that's what usually happens to me rather than onboard). Congrats on the op-up!

No worries about under-dressed ;) I notice that Y pax are more well-dressed (with suit and what not sometimes) compared to those in F/J in their PJs ;)

Thank you. I sure hope this is not a one off. But I think I should be more prepared the next time I am flying them in J, just in case. At least have the good camera standby in the cabin bag and dressed up a bit.

KUL will be delegated to Mixed Fleet crew from July 2017. The entire World Wide crew who were with me on the flight were visibly upset that they are losing KUL. For most of them, it will be their last working trip to KUL.

And of course, the Mixed Fleet crew will celebrate it with a 2-week strike. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-40305008

  7. I don't like it:

    (In my opinion)

    1. Head on, the aircraft will have a grumpy/frowning face :( like on China Airlines livery.

    2. The basic design is very Aeroflot (which is not good as the Russian who shot down MH17).

    3. The back part is too busy and redundant. I think it is best if they just choose either the wau or the crescent and its 14 pointed star. For this particular livery, I think it is best to drop the wau and have the blue yellow crescent and its 14 pointed star at the tail. The SQ A380 is better in this regard because their crescent and 5 stars is at the front part, away from the dove at the tail.
