  1. I think if proceed, this will be an investment by the Asia Aviation Plc (AAP) on its own. As there is no indication on the percentage of shares that AAP will acquire, it is safe to speculate that it will not be a majority shareholding and thus this investment will not have any impact on operation of both airlines.

It is actually difficult to imagine the 2 airlines being merged. First of all, Nok Air and NokScoot have 0 Airbus aircraft for fleet commonality with the AirAsia Group.

I had a dejavu with this news, recalling the time when the AirAsia Group did seriously considering taking over Batavia Air to expand Indonesia AirAsia. However, the deal collapsed at an advance stage and as we all know, Batavia Air went into bankruptcy shortly after.

  2. I've been wondering, if the plan did take off, the first few hurdles would be to determine which airport is to be the main hub and its associated issues. I believe all major airports in Sarawak want to be the hub for this Sarawak Airlines. However, due to Sarawak's "continental size" with at least 4 major airports suitable as a hub (KCH, MYY, SBW and BTU) this could be a major challenge. Sarawak is after all, 172 times larger than Singapore by total land area. Then the next challenge is to choose the logo/tail livery - whether it is the hornbill, the sapeh or mee kolok. Cabin crew uniform is to be inspired from the couture dresses of Puteri Santubong. Idris Jala is confirmed as the CEO isn't he? I think the best business model is to follow those who operates in a country with "continental size + several major hubs" as well i.e. Air China, Air Canada, Qantas and the US3 (United, Delta and American Airlines).

  3. I had a browse at the AK and D7 destinations from KUL and wonder why AK or D7 do not serve these destinations:

    1. Haikou - understood there was a fight with MAVCOM so AK dropped it because it pissed-off?

    https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/2018/06/11/mavcom-rejects-airasias-application-for-more-kl-haikou-kk-sandakan-flights/1640894

    2. Kathmandu - understandably there was a fight with the local partner and Nepali regulators on landing fees/airport charges so AK and D7 dropped it because it pissed-off.

    3. Mumbai - this is really weird. Is there a bilateral restriction?

    4. Surabaya - why only QZ serves this route but not AK?

    5. Xiamen - thought this is a pretty big Chinese city.

On the flip side, what is so special about Kochi that everyone (AK, MH and OD) serve it? I could only think of an incentive by the airport/local government.

  4. Garuda is launching Heathrow-Denpasar Bali non stop beginning 22 January 2019. 3 weekly service. I. AM. SO. EXCITED.

At 7,785 miles per leg, I believe this will be the second longest non stop route from LHR after the Qantas Perth flight.

Arrival time in Bali is off though.

The return leg, DPS-LHR is not non stop. Flight GA86 is via Jakarta. It is actually a triangular route. LHR-DPS-CGK-LHR.

  5. The summary of my 2018 is per attached FM stats. Key highlights:

    1. Flown 5 new airlines for the first time - Malindo, SWISS, Thai Airways, Thai Smile and MASwings. TG is a standout.
    2. Flown 4 new aircraft types for the first time - A359, A220-100, A220-300 and ATR 72-500. The ex Bombardier CSeries aircraft, especially the -100 is a standout.
    3. Visited 1 new country for the first time - Czechia.
    4. Changed work position in 2018 and therefore got to fly on a business trip after a while. Last business trip done was back in 2011.

Looking forward to new adventures in 2019. Happy new year to everyone in Malaysianwings.

  6. Reading the article, the targets applied to both passengers and airline/airport staff. Although it is commendable for MAVCOM to set this framework to the airport operator, a lot more could be done. I agree with everyone here that a few crucial aspects failed to be addressed:

    1. Baggage reclaim time in KUL is horrendous (this is an elephant in the room).
    2. I know for foreign passport holders, the immigration queue can be horrendous and disorganised.
    3. First security screening after immigration at MTB is pointless.
    4. The aerotrains need to go. It's falling apart and is an embarrassment to the country.
    5. I find landside transit accommodation option at MTB is severely lacking vis a vis KLIA2.
    6. I also find the airside walking area at the Satellite is too narrow and confusing. I hope MAHB can restore the walking area back to its former state. Those shops and restaurants in the middle of the walking area need to go.

  7. I dont think it was re-opened after the first intrusion.

It was reopened. 2 people very closed to me were in caught in the drama:

    • A spy from the MH Rumour Department on her way to Salzburg. Her flight departed during the window when the airport was re-opened between the 2 attacks.
    • A work colleague on his way to Marrakesh. He was so upset he decided not to go.

  8. Year end 2018 list for KUL:

    1. Air Mauritius | KUL-SIN-KUL

    2. Batik Air | KUL-MAA-KUL

    3. Ethiopian Airlines | KUL-SIN-KUL

    4. KLM | KUL-CGK-KUL

    5. PIA | KUL-BKK-KUL

    6. Royal Jordanian | KUL-BKK-KUL

    7. Uzbekistan Airways | KUL-SIN-KUL

The same list sorted by destination:

    Singapore

    1. Air Mauritius

    2. Ethiopian

    3. Uzbekistan

    Bangkok

    1. Pakistan

    2. Royal Jordanian

    Jakarta

    1. KLM

    Chennai

    1. Batik

PIA is new in the list. As usual, the service at the beginning may not be getting the 5th freedom right just yet but this will be coming eventually.

I am glad that KUL still manage to maintain a sizeable list of this unique rarity of 5th freedom flights.

The same list for LHR London Heathrow, just for fun:

    1. Air New Zealand | LHR-LAX-LHR

    2. EVA Air | LHR-BKK-LHR

    3. Qantas | LHR-SIN-LHR

    And that's it. Only 3.
