  1. How will that work onboard? More work for the crew then?

On Swiss shorthaul, the crew cart has a tablet which the crew used to distribute the snacks. Those on "lite" fares only entitled for a cup of mineral water and a chocolate bar.

I think MH must be planning a similar operation.

Wonder whether mab did proper research or survey before removing snack/meal from ey lite class fare. What about drinks?

From history, meal has consistently stirred up major scandals (snakebox, nasi lemak telanjang etc). MH does not seem to learn a bit. There will be uproar about this.

  2. The immediate effect of this new fare is more passengers trying to bring large bags into the cabin.

Unless MH ups its cabin luggage enforcement by at least 300 notches, it will end up being a half baked effort.

There should be a dedicated staff manning the departure gate and inspect all cabin luggage, and dictate which luggage goes and which does not go into the cabin. Those that are above the cabin luggage limit must be checked in and payment should be done on the spot. Better if a penalty/handling fee is charged to these customers for the extra care they required from the staff.

  3. Light option is practiced by lh and ba on intra Europe sectors.

Yes, on BA, the term is "Economy Basic" or the "hand baggage only" fare. I noticed this fare is popular among business customers who commute daily and weekend travellers. On a good day, this fare is always under £100 for a return trip. I am a hunter of this fare. I once got a return trip LHR-LIS during a weekend for £90. In my book, any BA's return fare under £100 is a bargain.

Btw, why do people need that much baggage allowance (I get it if you are moving or if you are traveling to temperate countries etc.) but for a holiday, 20kg is a lot.

It depends tho. On my last trip to DPS, the luggage was 25 kg on departure as I had to dress to impress during this trip. Shoes alone take a lot of space. But the baggage allowance was 40 kg, so no biggie really. It was an 8 days trip.

  4. OD will get a lot of traffic if it can get something similar to MH850/851 timing.

DPS being in the same time zone as KUL would mean most passengers ex KUL prefer to arrive around hotel check-in time (1 to 3 pm) and depart a couple of hours after hotel check-out time (2 to 4 pm).

I paid premium to fly on these timings during the last trip.

  5. With a lot of flights to/from DPS, I hope OD can spread out the KUL-DPS vv sectors evenly throughout the day and not all 4 or 5 flights arriving in/departing from DPS at around the same time. During my last trip, although OD was my first choice of carrier, the plan had to be abandoned as MH has better arrival and departure time ex DPS.

  6. I think this sudden news about MH is because the parent, Khazanah, reported a big loss and that is a stain on their previously sterling laurel. MH alone contributed for more than half of these losses. Now that it is out in the open and the government could not hide it any longer, I am quite certain Khazanah does not want MH in its portfolio anymore regardless of MH's "strategic asset" status. Khazanah should be up there with the likes of Temasek etc and not to be bogged down by MH.

I do not think MH is capable in pulling a JAL turnaround plan. Even if Khazanah hires the CEO whom made JAL's turnaround successful, I doubt he will succeed due to different business environment.

I think the prudent way to go is to close the airline and start afresh. Case reference: Sabena to Brussels Airlines, Swissair to SWISS and Meridiana to Air Italy. Having to start over has its advantages, the new MH gets to renegotiate all its contracts (suppliers, contractors, employees). It will be a bitter pill to swallow but those airlines I mentioned as case reference are successful today after closure of their respective predecessor. Given MH's flag carrier status, it will get the necessary will and assistance from the stakeholders if it chooses this path. At the end of the day, we all want MH to be successful and profitable.
