  1. If you come to Sibu during festival season and school holiday, you would agree that we do need a bigger terminal. The current check-in lounge is too small with only 10 check-in counters and is always crowded when there are two or more airplanes depart at the same time. This terminal was opened in 1994 and the passenger movement in SBW had reached 920,930 in 2005.

MAS urged not to discontinue service to Stockholm

    BY NG SI HOOI

STOCKHOLM: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy has received a message from the tour agents, business community and airport authorities here strongly appealing to Malaysia Airlines (MAS) not to discontinue its Kuala Lumpur-Stockholm-New York route.

“Even the Swedish government through its Industry, Employment and Communication Ministry has strongly appealed to us to reconsider the decision.

“I will convey the appeal to the MAS management to look into it,†he told Malaysian reporters after meeting with Swedish Civil Aviation Administration Group (LFV) and Stockholm Arlanda Airport director-general Lars Rekke at the airport here on Thursday.

However, Chan said the Government, which was the MAS major shareholder, normally would not interfere with decisions made by the MAS' management.

“We seldom interfere with the decisions taken by MAS, especially when the decisions were made for the best interest of the airlines.

MAS will discontinue the service from Jan 14 next year after operating for 20 months, since November 2004.

Rekke said: “The air service between Kuala Lumpur and Stockholm has benefited the two nations in many ways such as investment, business promotion and tourism.â€

He said MAS, as a prestigious airline, had a great potential in Sweden and the 20 months service from Kuala Lumpur to Stockholm was a relatively short time to make the judgment.

“We hope to convey our views on the decision. However, we fully respect any decision made by the MAS management and other relevant parties in Malaysia,†Rekke added.

  3. Here in Britain, people are debating on the issue of 'passenger profiling'. In future, they may put more security check on Asian young males (especially those from south asia and middle east), rather than passengers from other regions. They were debating on this issue in the TV last week. Next time, when you travel to the UK, dont be surprise if the security staff invite you to a special room for questioning or more security check.

My Vietnamese friend who travelled to US last month was asked to take-off his cloth and shoes in a security room. He wondered why only him had to go through such 'discriminated' process.

  4. All UK airports are affected currently, not only LHR. Passengers are required to check in two hours before flight and check-in counter will be closed one hour before flight. I have checked and BAA website and it seems that MH004 is not affected by the incident and is scheduled to arrive later in the afternoon. Most affected flights are to/ from US and those from continental Europe.

  5. I don't see anything wrong to keep Supersaver for the benefits of everyone in Malaysia. Why is AK so angry about it?? I realise that even sometimes, AK fares are not always cheap as you could see in the promotion campaign. I have once found out the one way fare from KUL to SBW was more than RM350, which was more expensive than MAS. Given this kind of price level, I don't call it low-cost.
