  1. Finally, some good news from MASwings :)

I guess they will be using the Twin Otter on the KCH-Tanjung Manis route? Can't wait...

    MASwings plans more flights

KUCHING: MASwings will introduce twice daily flights from here to Mukah from March 30.

The current frequency for the sector is nine flights per week.

The increased flights are part of the airline's intention to do more flying as well as introduce new aircrafts and chart new destinations.

The airline has attracted 250,000 passengers within five months of operations.

Another route, the Kuching-Tanjung Manis, will have three weekly flights from April 5.

MASwings, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, is a regional airline operating the Rural Air Services (RAS) in Sabah and Sarawak. It took over the services from FlyAsianXpress.

MASwings managing director Dr Amin Khan said the airline's first new ATR aircraft to replace the Fokker 50 would be commissioned in August.

"We will continue to strive to excel. We are single-minded in our purpose to serve our customers and link Sabah and Sarawak to the world," he said at a ceremony to celebrate MASwings' 250,000th passenger at the Kuching International Airport here recently.

Thanking the Sabah and Sarawak governments and the people for their support, he said: "Our achievement works out to MASwings carrying 2,000 passengers on 7,000 flights a day."

The 250,000th passenger was Nurfarizan Rosli from Bintulu, who had booked a ticket last week for the Kuching to Bintulu flight.

"I think it is excellent that MASwings appreciates frequent travellers like me and I feel honoured," said the Telekom Malaysia assistant manager, who received a complimentary ticket from Bintulu to Kota Kinabalu. State Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh, who launched the celebration, said MASwings had helped to improve the tourism industry in Sarawak since commencing operations in October.

  2. Wow, this is amazing! I thought getting a free London-Moscow business class return by doing nothing is good enough, but flying First from Europe to North East Asia sounds even better! I always thought SQ Krisflyer is generous, especially compared to Enrich - well, I was wrong.

My job is almost 99% office based and I barely travel on business. Therefore getting another 21k miles to achieve 50k miles might need some careful planning. Looks like I will have one more reason to fly SQ on my next trip home. The problem is, I am already a member of Krisflyer. I don't think it is possible to get miles credited to both KF & DC accounts?! Having said that I did it once many years ago when flying KUL-VIE on Lauda.

Thanks so much for the info Keith, you really are the fountain of information on FFP. There are tons of information in Flyertalk, it will take me a while to go through but I am sure its worth the read. :D

  3. I was looking at the bmi's Diamond Club redemption chart for spending miles with bmi and Star Alliance carriers. The chart indicates a return economy redemption ticket between zone 7 (South East Asia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh) and Zone 8 (North East Asia) requires only 30,000 miles. It also says 1 stopover is permitted per return journey and open jaw awards are allowed provided the destinations are within the same zone.

Does it mean I will be able to travel say, Colombo-Tokyo (with TG via Bangkok) then Nagoya-Kuching (with SQ via Singapore) for a mere 30,000 miles? And I also have the option to make 1 stopover in either Bangkok or Singapore? Sounds too good to be true, especially one can earn 30,000 miles effortlessly by (i) signing up as a Diamond Club member and get 9,000 miles (ii) applying a bmi amex, spend £250 within 3 months and get another 20,000 miles.

Am I missing something here?!! There must be a catch?! Could it be availability on such routes are very limited or of non-existence??? Just like there is almost NO WAY in getting an award ticket with Emirates on SIN-BNE or SIN-MEL and return for 45,000 skyward miles. :pardon:

  4. IMO, the packing can be simplified - the box does look quite 'posh', but it doesn't add any value to the passengers. So why not get rid of it and hand out the sandwiches to the passengers instead? Just like what BA do on short haul european routes. And have some spares ready to keep hungry passengers happy...

    Ba_madlgw.jpg

    MAD-LGW on BA

Save some money on packing and spend it on improving the quality of the sandwich.

    A sandwich should be enough for flight between 1-2hrs, e.g. BKI-KCH, KCH-JHB, SIN-PEN.

For flights between 2 and 3hrs, e.g. KUL-BKI, KUL-BKK, KUL-DPS, maybe add some fruits or crisps. SQ girls normally walk up and down the aisle with a basket of fruits, crisps and small sandwiches in between meals on long haul flights - MH can copy that.

Any flights more than 3hrs, e.g. KUL-HAN, KUL-MNL, I guess it is more appropriate to serve hot meals...

    :pardon:

  5. Chai, may I know why you separated 'Malaysia Airlines' with 'Malaysian Airlines System'? Was it to distinguish the old MAS (red white livery) with the new one (red blue white grey livery)?

Yes. But I always wonder if this is necessary. Technically they are the same airline... :pardon:

  6. I have experienced them on my LHR-KUL flights and the portions are a lot smaller. The food choices were particularly grim and NOT of the standard associated with MAS. The meals were not tasty at all.

Sorry to hear about that! I haven't flown MH ex-LHR since 2005. And I doubt I will be flying with them anytime soon - not just because of the food, but lots of other reasons too.... These days the cheapest ex-LHR fare offered by MH is similar to the more flexible (W class fare) offered by SQ. At least on SQ they feed you well and you get 100% krisflyer miles (MH only gives 30%). Plus nice little touches such as hot towels, menu and amenity kit.

Looking at the microwave meal pic, now I have one less reason to fly MH. And come this March, I have one more reason to fly SQ - their A380 is coming!

  7. And now finally can get KUL-LHR on e-ticket! Just bought one! :p

Good for you, Edwin! I was playing with the new booking system last night and was surprised to see they do LHR-KUL and back for about £490 inclusive on certain days. Thats a very good price for a nonstop flight!

Too bad I won't be going home anytime soon.... :pardon:

The new booking system is a big improvement but I am slightly disappointed that there is no flexible date search, which is pretty much standard feature on most airlines website e.g. SQ, BA, EK, QR, QF, NZ, ...

  8. I have, very recently, booked return tickets to KUL from LHR.

The booking officer at my local MAS office told me the airline will definitely not be operating from Gatwick at the moment or the foreseeable future.

Hmm, how odd, the Gatwick flight is still bookable via the travel agents though....

Just out of curiosity, may I know which local MAS office you have been to?

  9. In A.Net, an A.Netter mentioned that MH initiated this flight (KUL-LGW) because of 'certain someone in Brighton'. Who is the person? Should be someone very influential.

Oh dear, it looks like MAS doesn't even start the LGW service with a good reason!!!

I really hope that LGW will work for MAS, but 2x per week just isn't good enough!

  10. So how do I get a ticket for my flight back to KUL from LGW. I have tried the MAS website but there does not seem to be such a flight in the booking section.

    Any ideas?

Desmond, are you currently in the UK?

MH LGW-KUL flights are already bookable via the major online travel agents such as www.expedia.co.uk, www.opodo.co.uk and www.ebookers.com. You might also want to try some other smaller travel agents who specialise in far east / australasia deals such as www.rexair.co.uk, www.leestravel.com

Don't get the wrong idea that MH ex-LGW flights will be cheaper, you will be disappointed. Travelling to KL in July is £660 return inclusive. Emirates who recently up their fare ex-UK is still £180 cheaper at £480 return inclusive!
