  1. A multi-stop same plane direct daily flight between PEN - BKI: MH2610 op by 734 circa early yr 2000-2003.

Routing was PEN-KUL-KCH-MYY-LBU-BKI. You depart PEN at 08:05 and land at BKI at 16:10 - an 8hr 5 min journey.

My sister was on that flight once, from KCH-MYY-LBU-BKI. The journey took 4hrs and she was served only 3 cups of orange juice - one per sector.

A few of my relatives (all in their late 60's and 70's) took this flight from KCH to BKI in the early 00's. They got confused and got off at LBU and the plane took off for BKI without them. My poor cousin who was waiting at BKI got some b******ing because my relatives had been waiting at LBU for hours thinking that they were in BKI.

  2. Wow, two Silkair flights in one evening!

Things are going to get really quiet after the CNY rush. Silkair is already reducing flights to KCH from the second week of February, down from daily to 4x weekly. My flight on 9-Feb has been cancelled :( . Royal Brunei is also cutting flights from 3x to 2x weekly in Feb too. Hopefully these are just temporary and things will pick up soon...

  3. Meant to upload this but kept forgetting. An article about AKX to London, taken from the London Paper on 2 December 2008. Some of the information is already outdated, for example MH and Etihad fares were quoted at £605 and £634 respectively, they have since gone down to around £525 (MH) and £440 (Etihad).

With the pound look set to drop below RM5 for the first time since 1997, travelling in the UK is now becoming much more affordable, especially compared to the Eurozone. ;)

  4. It does actually. 2 pax return KUL-LON, on AirAsia X, with food and baggage allowance is equivalant to a single return LON-SIN-KUL on SQ.

Suprisingly, a one way LON-SIN-KL is 300 ringgit LESS than a return equivalent ticket.

Be very careful there, legacy airlines rarely offer cheap one way ticket for long haul flights. You might end up paying more compared to getting a KUL-LON return with Emirates, Qatar, KLM etc. If you decided to fly AKX on the way out, you might as well use them on the way back. :pardon:

  5. Thanks for the tips on food, yeadrain. I have never tried roast goose before, so I'll be alright. ;) I guess the closest dish I can compare with will be the cantonese style roast duck?

Keith, I love your suggestions. I will probably think about it if I was 10 years younger! Is there a paying lounge in HKIA? I will be flying economy so will not have access to the lounge.

Once again thank you all for the suggestions! :)

  6. Yes Naim, I will consider yeadrain's tips. Thanks yeadrain for the detailed suggestions! Much appreciated! ;)

Now I only have one more question - I am keen to try out some roast goose. How easy it is to find a restaurant (or a hawker stall) that does this. I am hoping it is as easy as finding McDonald's in London?

  7. Hi all... need some advice here.

I will be doing a long transit in HKG Feb next year. Incoming flight STA 1215 and outgoing flight STD 0945 the following day.

I already have a reservation with the Renaissance Kowloon. However I also have the option of staying at an airport hotel - the Marriott Skycity. I wonder which one would be more convenient in my case?

This will be my first visit to Hong Kong. I do not intend to do any sightseeing but it will be daft not to have quick stroll in the city. I need to find out how is the location of Renaissance Kowloon - e.g. proximity to the station, how easy to find nice local food (roast goose in particular). Does the SkyPlaza in HKIA does nice, authentic food too? The information from the hotel website seem to be very basic.

    Many Thanks in advance! ;)

  8. I hope they bring back KUL-KCH-PER vv...now they have the 738...Kuchingnites are now flying MI/SQ via SIN, BI via BWN and TR/TT via SIN...MH via KUL means having to backtrack our route...very troublesome...next March it will be 3K/JQ via SIN...MH could use a direct KCH-PER service I reckon...lets see how things will go...

Yeah 738 should do a better job than the A333... I did KCH-PER-KCH a few years back in late June (off peak season). There were less than 50 passengers in Y both ways. The number of passengers embarked/disembarked at KCH is about 10!! my friend and I had the whole rear cabin to ourselves. Spoke to an 'aunty' who was a 'regular' on this route, she said the flight was never half full. How sad :(

  9. Hi Sharil,

First Great Western has trains between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads. If you book in advance the off peak fare is £10 one way. There are no direct train service between Heathrow and Bristol, it requires a change in Hays & Harlington Stn IIRC.

Alternatively you can try the National Express coach. The do have direct service from Heathrow.

If you are planning to take Qatar, you can consider an open jaw ticket, i.e. KUL-DOH-LHR, back on CDG-DOH-KUL. That will save you time and money having to backtrack to London and avoid paying the £40 UK air passenger duty.

  10. Down side ?

Schiphol is one of the best airports in Europe for transitting...

LCY in April ? KLM cityhopper will stop operating there effective 05jan09, so it will, most probably, be a VLM flight :pardon:

No, no, Schiphol is great, way better than any London airports. The only reason I said down side is because the flight involves a transit vs non-stop by BA or AC :D

  11. Hi Naim

Apart from Air Transat, you can take a look at some popular online travel agents in the UK

    Expedia

    Opodo

    Ebookers

    Netflights

If you go to the netflights site, scroll down to the flight offer section (just under the flight search tool). Click on any destinations (e.g. Hong Kong) and you will be transferred to a new page. Pick a continent/destination from the drop down menu, the site will display a list of fares offered by major airlines (not charter airlines). Click on the month you want to travel and there you get a calander view of which day the offer is available. I find this very useful as a reference. Atm the cheapest LON-YYZ is £395 with KLM, not great. You can also use the tool to get a flavour of air fares to other North American destinations. Most of the time the cheapest route is London to New York or Boston (£250 or lower)

May to early June is low season in the UK. It is also the best time of the year to travel cheaply. You might find more offers around after Christmas when the country goes into a 'sale' mode - including the travel agents. Air fares seem to be dropping atm and the Pound hasn't hit rock bottom yet. So if you are not desperate, maybe its worth a wait...

    Enjoy your fare hunting! ;)

  12. Just found out that if you book KUL-STN roundtrip, the STN-KUL leg is priced at RM821 (RM499 plus tax) - as Edwin's post #50. However, if you book the return leg separately, you will see that the price is quoted in GBP at GBP99 (GBP41 plus tax). Based on today's GBP/RM exchange rate, that's approx RM550, a saving of approx RM270! ;)

    AKX_STN1.jpg

So it works out cheaper if you book a return trip as two one ways! The base fare becomes approx RM1100+!

  13. That's what I was thinking too. Does flying into Manchester i.e. help?

Unfortunately no. The air passenger duty applies as long as you are flying out of any UK airports. Thats why you will see taxes on AKX STN-KUL is so much higher than KUL-STN.

For leisure travellers a good way of avoiding the £40 (or £85 by Dec 2010!) is to fly from an European airport, e.g. Paris or Amsterdam. You can always get a cheap flight there with Easyjet or BA from as little as £25 one way. If you love train, Eurostar from London to Paris takes just over 2hours.

  14. Ehem, I mean between H C Chai, Keith T and I.

    Definitely not me! ;)

With recession predicted to be in full swing by 2009 and the £££ losing grounds against most of the major currencies, I guess I will be taking more trips on trains than planes. :D I still have some miles to burn on bmi and Skywards (expiring soon) but will probably use them for trips in 2010.
