Boeing Launches 787-10 With Major Orders

Boeing officially launched the Boeing 787-10 at the Paris Air Show on Tuesday. The manufacturer is going ahead with the development of the aircraft on the back of firm commitments for 102 from five different customers. The first 787-10 is to be delivered in 2018.

Among the customers launching the program are Air Lease Corporation (30 aircraft), United Airlines (20), British Airways (12), Singapore Airlines (30) and GECAS (ten). All of the orders are new commitments except ten of the 20 United aircraft, which have been rolled over from a previous 787 order and converted into the larger version.

The 787-10 is a 18 ft. stretch of the -9 allowing room for around 40 additional seats. Boeing says it will offer room for around 300-330 passengers. The aircraft will have a range of 7,000 naut. mi.

“The 787-10 will be the most efficient jetliner in history,” Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner said at the launch event in Paris. “The 787-10 is 25% more efficient than airplanes of its size today and more than 10% better than anything being offered by the competition for the future.”

According to Boeing, final assembly and flight tests of the aircraft are both to begin in 2017 with first delivery scheduled for 2018.

“The 787-10 will be one of the most powerful wide-body aircraft for decades ahead,” ALC Chairman/CEO Steven Udvar-Hazy said. In his opinion, the aircraft will benefit from operational and development experience gained on the -8 and the -9.

Boeing managed to overcome Hazy’s initial concerns about range by increasing it to 7,000 naut. mi. Hazy said that was addressed by introducing a slightly higher maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 553,000 pounds. Some reinforcements in the wing to body attachment area and on the landing gear were needed to accommodate the increased weight. Engine thrust will also be slightly higher than originally planned. “The range covers 97% of the wide-body city pairs of the world,” Hazy pointed out. Its range will be around 1,500 naut. mi. than the -9.

The ALC CEO believes that a lot of 777-200s and Airbus A340s will be replaced by the aircraft.

Garuda Indonesia Pits 747-8 Against A380 for Hajj Trips

PT Garuda Indonesia (GIAA) is considering the purchase of Airbus SAS A380s or Boeing Co (BA). 747-8 jumbo jets in partnership with its government to help ferry religious pilgrims to Saudi Arabia.

A purchase of three to five of the planes may come “very soon,” contingent on an agreement with Indonesian officials, Chief Executive Officer Emirsyah Satar said today at the Paris Air Show.

Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim state and needs the four-engine jets to fly travelers to Saudi Arabia for the annual hajj, Satar said. The airliners could be in service as early as 2015, he said, as Boeing and Airbus seek to fill near-term production slot vacancies for their largest planes.

Garuda will conduct a long-term fleet review this year to determine its aircraft needs through 2025, Satar said. The assessment will include examining long-range models such as Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and 777X and the Airbus A350, along with short-haul jets.

The Air France-KLM Group

has finalized a firm contract for 25 A350-900 aircraft and for a further

25 options. These aircraft will become an essential element in the

Group’s future fleet strategy.

"This order of new-generation, high performance

aircraft reflects the importance of our investments for the benefit of

our customers, whose comfort is at the heart of our concerns. With the

A350, Air France-KLM will continue to operate one of the most modern

fleets in the world, and ensure the growth of its long-haul activity,

while achieving significant cost savings." said Alexandre de Juniac,

Chairman and CEO of the Air France-KLM Group as of first of July 2013.

Peter Hartman, President and Chief Executive Officer

of KLM, said: “Our order for this new aircraft type opens a new chapter

for the Group. This aircraft introduces major environmental advances

and will contribute to our ambitious targets for noise and carbon

reduction.“

"We are honoured that our all new, extra efficient

A350-900, which has just recently flown on its maiden flight, will

become an essential cornerstone in the future fleet development of Air

France-KLM,” said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President and Chief Executive

Officer. "The A350 XWB's unbeatable economics and environmental

credentials will pay nice dividends into the future positioning of the

airline, while the aircraft’s commonality with the groups existing

Airbus fleet will generate further efficiencies and savings.”

The Air France-KLM Group currently operates a fleet

of just over 190 Airbus aircraft, comprising eight A380s, 31 A330s, 13

A340s, 25 A321s, 54 A320s, 41 A319s and 18 A318s. With this new order

Air France-KLM joins an exclusive group of airlines who are customers

for every member of the Airbus product family.

The A350 XWB is the all-new mid-size long range

product line comprising three versions and seating between 270 and 350

passengers in spacious three-class layouts. The new family will bring a

step change in efficiency using 25 per cent less fuel and providing an

equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions. By the end of May, the A350 XWB

has already won 613 firm orders from 33 customers worldwide.

PARIS: SriLankan to take 13 A350s and A330s

SriLankan Airlines is to order seven Airbus A350-900s and six A330-300s.

It is to purchase 10 of the aircraft - four A350s and the six A330s - and will lease the other three A350s.

SriLankan chief executive Kapila Chandrasena says the discussions on the lease arrangement have yet to conclude.

Airbus values the agreement at $2.6 billion at list prices.

Rolls-Royce says SriLankan has selected Trent 700 engines for the A330s while the A350s will be fitted with Trent XWBs, the only powerplant currently available.

"This transaction is to replace the widebodies," says Chandrasena. SriLankan's fleet of 21 aircraft includes 13 long-haul jets, six A340-300s and seven A330-200s.

"Over the next 10 years we'll be replacing those," Chandrasena adds. SriLankan taking the A330-300s from October 2014 and the A350-900s from 2017.

PARIS: O’Leary breaks air-show boycott with 737 order

Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary broke a personal boycott on air show attendance to confirm a $3 billion order - at list prices - for 175 Boeing 737-800s.

"It's a great pleasure to be here," said O'Leary, breaking his self-imposed, 25-year silence at industry trade shows, which, he complains, crawl with "aerosexuals".

No one appreciated the feisty Irish CEO's debut appearance at Le Bourget more than Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief executive Ray Conner.

"For Michael to make his first visit to an air show and be here is a tremendous statement for all of us," Conner says.

The contract signing completes an arduous, five-year saga of contract negotiations in which the Ryanair boss - and landmark Boeing customer - flirted with offers from the Airbus A320neo and theComac C919. A Ryanair team is currently evaluating an order for at least 200 737 Max aircraft. O'Leary wants to sign the follow-on deal by the end of the year.

Ryanair prefers the 737-800 to the A320neo because it holds nine more seats in a single-class lay-out, O'Leary says.

When Conner added that the 737 also is more fuel efficient, O'Leary interjected: "I actually disagree with that." The 737 and A320 come out about even on overall fuel efficiency, he says, but the 737-800 and 737 Max 8 are more fuel efficient per seat.

In fact, O'Leary wants Boeing to install still nine more seats in the Max 8, raising the total number 199 or 200 and maximising the regulatory requirement to provide one flight attendant for every 50 passengers.

"That's a project that we would continue to try to encourage Boeing to work on," O'Leary says.

Conner responds that he still intends to introduce the 737 Max 8 in the third quarter of 2017 with the same number of seats as the 737-800. However, Conner says, Boeing will consider options to meet additional customer demands after the aircraft is introduced.
