Leonardo AW159 Wildcat

Recommended Posts

Leonardo, with the support of the British 847 Naval Air Squadron, presented its AW159 Wildcat helicopter to Malaysia's Armed Forces at the Royal Malaysian Navy Base Lumut and Leonardo Helicopters' facility in Subang Airport recently. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Subang event.

The two AW159 Wildcats are part of the French Navy's five month amphibious deployment, Exercise Jeanne D'Arc, to the Middle East, Asia and South Pacific and are embarked on the helicopter assault ship FS Dixmude to provide battlefield reconnaissance capability to the deployed forces.

The UK's Royal Navy and British Army operate 62 AW159 Wildcats in both naval and overland roles. The Royal Malaysian Navy currently operates the Leonardo Super Lynx 300 helicopter in the anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare roles.

While the helicopter took off on its test flight for invited guests, we took the opportunity to tour the facilities at Leonardo's cavernous 65,000 sq. ft. hangar facility.

The AW159 Wildcat can be quite a thirsty beast - so refuelling was carried out before the next sortie....
