American orders 47 787s for fleet replacement

Recommended Posts

American Airlines has ordered 47 Boeing 787s as replacements for its older widebody aircraft.

The deal includes 22 787-8s and 25 787-9s with deliveries from 2020 and 2023, respectively, the Fort Worth-based carrier says. It also includes 28 options.

The order is valued at $12 billion at list prices, says Boeing.

"This was a difficult decision between the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A350 and A330neo and we thank both manufacturers for their aggressive efforts to earn more of American’s business," says Robert Isom, president of American, in a statement. "In the end, our goal to simplify our fleet made the 787 a more compelling choice.”

The airline will use the 787-8s to replace its 22 767-300ERs, and the 787-9s to replace its nine A303-300s and some of its older 777-200s, it says.

As part of the deal, American has deferred indefinitely 40 Boeing 737 Max 8 deliveries due from 2020 to 2022, the airline says. It is scheduled to take delivery of 60 737-8s through 2020, according to its latest fleet plan.

Talk is rife about AirAsia X going for 787 as well but thats just 99% unlikely

Airasia X's fleet is small - if they switch, the whole fleet will have to be 787s. That means a big upheaval - does not make sense for them to do such a thing as it only inflates their operating costs.

American is trying to simplify their fleet by reducing aircraft types. Airasia X would be introducing complexities to their fleet if they went for B787s.

Boeing will definitely need to come up with a mega deal to pay any penalties Airbus will impose on the cancelled orders. Airasia Group is also unlikely to jeopardise their relationship with Airbus with such a speculative move to B787s.

Hawaiian has similar number A330 fleet and that didn't stop them from ordering 787s.

D7 by operating single aircraft type i.e A333 may save on training but as demand on various routes fluctuate with seasons, it is difficult for D7 to maximize yield and load.

By having different aircraft type may increase training and engineering cost but if increase in yield/profit could more than cover the incremental cost, it is a sensible decision. Placing incremental cost ahead of yield/profit is like putting cart before the horse.
