They are probably used as weights to stop the plane from tipping at the tail.

EVERETT, Washington — After billions of dollars and years of delays, Boeing pushed the first passenger-carrying 787 Dreamliner out of the paint shop and opened the doors for a sneak peek inside.

The freshly painted 264-seat airliner rolled out on Saturday for launch customer All Nippon Airways, and company execs were on hand to get a first-hand look at the latest addition to their fleet. During a press conference at Boeing's delivery center, just a short walk from where the 787 Dreamliner aircraft are assembled, ANA senior vice president Mitsuo Morimoto said, "We plan to use the 787 to expand our business, particularly our international routes."

The 787 is expected to finish certification testing during the next several weeks. Boeing says the airplane pictured above will be delivered before the end of September.

The first passenger flight for the 787 Dreamliner will be a chartered hop from Tokyo's Narita airport to Hong Kong. Then it begins scheduled flights between Tokyo's Haneda airport and either Okayama or Hiroshima. Although the 787 has a range of as much as 8,200 nautical miles and a cruise speed of Mach 0.85, All Nippon will be doing regional flights to start.

No more manual operated shades

One of the coolest things passengers will notice are the windows. The composite airframe allowed Boeing to install larger windows, and the Dreamliner's are more than 10 inches wide and more than 18 inches tall. That's the largest of any airliner.

When it's time to sleep or watch a movie, there are no shades to draw. It's all done electronically. Each window has a five-position switch to control the level of dimming.

At left is a window with the top light illuminated indicating normal mode. Press the button twice and you have the middle setting, which allows enough light to easily see outside. Press the button twice more and you're at the darkest setting (seen at right). You can stil see through the window, but barely.

You must be patient, however. Push the button five times to go from clear to dark and it will take about 90 seconds to complete the transition.

The cabin crew can control the window settings as well. Instead of walking through cabin reminding passengers to close their shades when everyone is trying to sleep, the crew can limit how much light enters the cabin by choosing a default setting.

Any photo from the 12 seated business class ?

Our interactive window systems utilize a similar electrochromic formulation to the one used in our proprietary electrochromic technology that Gentex developed for auto-dimming automotive rearview mirrors, using time-tested chemistry and durable device construction.

Electrochromic technology uses electricity to change the color and light transmission of a transparent medium containing materials that are capable of generating color. This medium is typically sandwiched between two thin transparent layers that have transparent conductive coatings on the side that comes into contact with the medium.

In this case, it is an electronic gel medium sandwiched between two thin panels. An electric current is passed into the conductive coatings and across the panel to cause an electrochemical reaction to occur in the gel.

Applying a small electrical DC voltage across the gel causes it to darken, while removing the voltage allows the gel to return to its natural, transparent state. The voltage can be precisely controlled and adjusted in small increments to allow for the selection of intermediate states of light transmittance.

ANA announced it would fit 12 Sicma Majesty business class recliner seats. In economy it will fit 252 Sicma AIRgonomic FX seats in a 2-4-2 layout.

Further, the aircraft is fitted with a JAMCO-supplied economy class bar underneath the signature 787 LED-lit archway, female-only lavatories, Panasonic in-flight entertainment and Toto washlets in each lavatory, a first for a commercial aircraft.

For international long-haul operations, ANA will offer 46 Sicma Skylounge seats supplied as part of its Business Staggered product with 1-2-1 and 1-1-1 layout, and 112 economy class AIRgonomic FX seats.

The aircraft will first be deployed on charter operations between Tokyo Narita airport and Hong Kong. In the fourth quarter it will begin operating on regular scheduled domestic Japanese routes connecting Tokyo's Haneda Airport with Hiroshima and Okayama.

Domestic operations will be used to train pilots and cabin crews before expanding to regional operations with a 222-seat configuration of 42 recliner business class seats and 180 economy seats.

In the first picture, I thought the plane is small. In the second picture, it looks like an Embraer. Then I saw the people under the fuselage in the first pic and wow that is a big plane. Those large windows make it look deceptively small.

No more difficulty in making sure passsengers have their window shades up during take off and landing. They should also have electronic control for all seats so that you cannot recline during take off and landing.
