Spotting at Langkawi

Recommended Posts

Guest Levent

Hi guys,

I am planning to make a short trip to Langkawi on Thai Air Asia's new flights from Bangkok in January. They're offering free flights, only taxes be paid! I've seen a few pics of LGK on the forum.

How easy or difficult is it to take pics at this airport? Security issues? Locations? Airlines?

I know Air Asia, MAS and Silk Air fly there. Any other regular carriers or charters?

Also, do you have any tips for accommodation - not a dump but not too expensive either. WiFi internet would be nice.

Thanks in advance for your input.

LGK is a beautiful airport and if the weather is good, then utterly scenic! IIRC there is a platform atop a hill overlooking the entire airfield and terminal! There is also a perimeter road around the runway which is good. Around the Mofaz hangar, there is a kampung on the fenceline which is okay too.

Traffic wise, expect plenty of AK, MH, some Silkair perhaps :D

Have a good one and can't wait to read your trippie for hopefully an "inaugral" service?? :good:

Levent selamlar,

langkawi airport area is one of the best spotting places. You have a lot chances to take picture along runway sides, near runways and a there is a hill which has panoramic airport area.Especially along rwy 03 has great visual angle. But don't forget, Langkawi is not "bussiest" airport like Penang.

Don't worry about accommodation, you will have several choises by your budget. If is there any Malaysia Tourism office in Thailand, please go there and take a Langkawi brochure. You will see so much hotel choises . As you know quality on depends persons.

Have a fun in Langkawi.

LGK spotting is very easy.

Just pick up "cheap" rental car then driving around!

No worry for ladder. Fence is super low! 2steps is enough.

No security patrol around too.

I am glad to show you some sample.

end of 03 afternoon side (03 end only available West side)

at 1600 lighting is still s#1t during Winter time(Jan) after 1700 it's ok.

Never knew there was an airport-hotel (Helang Hotel) :yahoo:

Anyhow: excellent shots, Yukihiro - the IL-62M is, definitely, a magnificent looking aircraft; no doubt, thunderous take-offs to be had ;)

Agree with Yukihiro. Just rent a car. Cheapest car could go as low as RM 80 a day (Proton Iswara - not really that good, but good enough to get anywhere in the island).

BTW, great photos there Yukihiro.

I just got back from Langkawi by ferry. Was surprised they have upgraded the ferry terminal. Even got Starbucks Coffee with free wireless internet.

Now it is school holiday season in Malaysia, so expect full house in most hotels in Langkawi.

Hoep you have a great time there Levent. Happy also to know there is a new AK flight to Langkawi from Bangkok.

OK Levent, make sure you visit LGK at Russian period. If mistake to choose date...sux traffic...

In my opinion, 7B(Krasair) IL9 (1st visit LGK) is highlight of new year charter 06-07.

Inbound already arrived yesterday(30th) ferry flight back to DME is 7B9906 today STD1120L.

Outbound? hehehe on 8th Jan :p Maybe ferry in the day before...

I believe you might see 1xIL6 1xIL9 1xTU5 1xILW next week...

But every one leave the paradise on different date on 8Jan,10Jan,13Jan and 14Jan...my god.

Please do spotting on behalf of me...

I gave up LGK this time but sure will try Russian spotting at another paradise hehehe.

btw, please do not forget to bring your international driving license.

If without a car it's hard to do spotting there...

good luck man

Is it used to prevent the aircraft from falling on its tail during taxiing and parking? :help:

I am afraid I won't be able to make it to see the Russians this time, but I'm sure I'll visit Langkawi in the near future again! Thanks all you guys for your input and recommendations. I will be hiring a small car to explore the island and the various spotting spots. And of course I will post a trippie and some pics when I get back!

Andrew, you can imagine the Il-62 is a heavy beast, with the four engines mounted at the tail. When I worked at Maastricht Airport, loading and unloading cargo planes, we had to place a metal rod under the tail of the aircraft - Boeing 707 or Douglas DC-8, I'm not sure now - to check whether it got too tail heavy while loading the cargo in the rear.

Thanks for explaining to me Levent :)

Well, I have never seen an Il-62 "in-person" though ;)

Didn't know this topic has existed since 2006. Brought the bus up north to the holiday island this afternoon, expected blue sky over there, and so my camera was with me
