Thailand’s Duty-Free King Buys Controlling Stake in Thai AirAsia

Recommended Posts

BANGKOK—Thai duty-free operator King Power International Group has bought a controlling stake in the Thai unit of budget carrier AirAsia Bhd. for 7.9 billion baht ($224.5 million).

The acquisition represents a new direction for King Power’s founder, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, whose Leicester City Football Club became England’s premier league champions in May. The company so far has built its business around a duty-free concession with Airports of Thailand PCL, which operates six international airports in the kingdom. But with its monopoly expiring five years from now, analysts say King Power is looking for fresh alternative revenue streams, potentially including selling duty-free items on Thai AirAsia flights.

Good exposure for the AirAsia brand too. Leicester is the new EPL champs and their stadium is already named King Power Stadium. You can bet that the AirAsia branding will be all over the stadium and the club soon.

Could one of FD's A320's carry the Leicester colours?

How about QPR?

QPR is in the Championship, second tier behind the EPL. Last season they finished mid table. Doubt they can secure promotion to the EPL anytime soon. Leicester meanwhile is the current champions of the top tier EPL. More exposure.

After what transpired in the season just completed, who would bet against having Leicester relegated to the championship and QPR gaining promotion to EPL this time next year ? :) Edited by BC Tam

Hahaha. Yes. Leicester had a fairytale season. TF is probably already scrutinising everything that they have been doing and will try to replicate them at QPR.

Kings power Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha is a devotee of some monks and rituals, not sure TF could share the same believe.

Thai duty-free king sells Asia Aviation stake after 18 months

Thai AirAsia chief executive Tassapon Bijleveld has bought back 36.3% of Asia Aviation, the holding vehicle for the airline.
He paid Bt8.3 billion ($253 million) to obtain 1.8 billion shares at Bt4.7 a share, says Asia Aviation in a statement.
The shares were acquired from the family of Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, group chairman of Thailand duty-free monopoly King Power Group. Just 18 months ago, in June 2016, King Power paid Bijleveld's family Bt7.9 billion to obtain 39% of Asia Aviation.
Bijleveld's deal, confirmed the evening of Wednesday 27 December, sees him pay a sharp discount to yesterday's Asia Aviation share price of Bt6.15 a share.
The deal brings his stake to 41.3%, while the Srivaddhanaprahha family's stake drops to 3.5%.
