MAS, SIA and Silk Air's agreement

Recommended Posts

From Wikipaedia:

On 24 February 2005, Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines/Silkair agreed to seek greater commercial cooperation that will enhance their competitiveness and benefit consumers as Asia moves towards an open skies policy. The three airlines signed a tripartite codeshare agreement today that will empower travellers with wider options and more connectivity when flying between the two countries. Singapore Airlines and SilkAir, which is the regional airline of the Singapore Airlines Group, will start codeshare flights with Malaysia Airlines between Singapore and Kuching, and Singapore and Kota Kinabalu from 27 March 2005, the start of the Northern Summer 2005 Schedule. (Appendix 1)

The Singapore – Penang sector will be codeshared between Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines only. For the SilkAir-operated Singapore-Kuching sector, the codeshare with Malaysia Airlines will start from July 1.

Has anyone seen this happening? SilkAir A320s in KCH and BKI?

I don't have all the details so please excuse me if I am wrong - I am surprised that Singapore won't give Air Asia access to Changi (or bus service to Senai), but Malaysia gives access to Singapore Airlines so easily? Seems like Malaysia's negotiation skills are a bit weak. Shouldn't this agreement be a bargaining chip for Air Asia's efforts to break into Singapore?

Well, not sure with the politics behind this one but my general observation is Malaysia is always in the cucumber position and Singapore, durian (A case of menggelek luka, digelek pun luka). We're always at a disadvantage and Singapore's got the upper hand. Case in point: The electrification and double tracking into Singapore. Singapore won't let KTM extend the KTM Komuter service 'because it opposes Overhead Lines'. If we were to react by barring Singaporean buses from entering JB, the end effect will be felt by the thousands of Malaysians who commute daily to work in Singapore.

It's basically the same thing with water, CIQ, reclamation works, and airspace use. If we react, either we look bad or the bad end effect will be ours to feel.
