According to the Bangkok Post of 19 March 2013, the subsidiary of Malaysian specialist cheap flight AirAsia has asked an operating license to the authorities of Thailand, hoping to launch in October regular connections from Bangkok airport - Suvarnabhumi

Way long overdue!

I second that!

It probably will have far greater success in BKK as the North Asia and Europe demand in and out of BKK is far bigger than KUL!

True, but the process is ain't simple as that. The aircraft needs to be in Thai's registration, crewed by Thais and a fresh application for a new aircraft type to be inserted in the Thai's Air Asia AOC, not to mention a fresh application for a new AOP since the intention is to operate to new routes.

All these involves new audit by the authority body, objections from current operators and a new air services agreement between Thailand and the countries involve.

But then, money talks ...... :good:

AirAsia X selection of Bangkok as second base increases pressure on Thai Airways

AirAsia X is close to finalising plans for establishing an affiliate in Thailand, a fast-growing market with favourable conditions for long-haul low-cost operations. The new joint venture project between AirAsia X and Thai partners, which will almost certainly include sister short-haul carrier Thai AirAsia, will put further pressure on the Thai Airways Group.

Thai Airways has already been struggling to fend off increasing LCC competition in the domestic and regional international market, which it has responded to by increasing its involvement in short-haul LCC affiliate Nok Air and launching new hybrid carrier Thai Smile. AirAsia X will bring new LCC competition to some of Thai’s strongest medium-haul markets, particularly Australia, Korea and Japan.

Thai Airways has been studying potential long-haul low-cost options and the launch of an AirAsia X affiliate in Thailand, which will likely commence services within the next year, adds urgency. Thai Airways has already been slightly impacted by Asia’s two other long-haul LCCs, Jetstar and Scoot, but having to compete with a local long-haul LCC represents a much bigger challenge.

AirAsia X has only had one base – Kuala Lumpur – since launching services in 2007. Additional bases were always envisioned with Bali and Bangkok initially considered the most likely alternatives as AirAsia X could leverage its relationship with Indonesia AirAsia and Thai AirAsia. Tokyo and Manila also have become considerations for AirAsia X following the launch of Japan AirAsia and AirAsia Philippines in 2012.

This also will increase the pressure in KUL base.

Agreed! Somehow I think this will affect D7 more than TG as TG has always had many competitors even back when TG was still operating out of Donmueang. Besides, various holiday airlines fly in and out of Bangkok and not to forget Norwegian, which has big plans for Bangkok too.

While that may be the case, I think that Airasia X have worked out that the total from KUL + DMK will be better than from just KUL alone. It also help them cover the Thai market as well as compete better with Scoot.

End result will be great deals for travellers, especially those Aussies who love D7!

First flight operating out of BKK, it's going to be LON!

D7 has already said that North Asia will be the initial focus of its proposed DMK operations.

Europe will only be looked at after they received the A350 (2017 or later). The only factors that can change that will be lower airport charges/taxes/ETS and lower oil prices. US os even further away as demand is uncertain - plus US Visas are a pain in the neck for Malaysian passport holders.

They can't compete with all the ME giants! Unlikely they will fly to EU anytime soon.

Malaysian applying US Visa is not really a pain but very tedious, not only just applying but requiring interview. But once approved, it's a 10 years valid Visa.

Actually a US visa application is only a pain in the neck if you don't have the right documents to assist with the process, and the interview process is not as horrific as some people have described.

I really believe Malaysians should visit the US more. It'll definitely clear up a lot of misconception about the country, and of course it's less costly than EU/UK

Not quite 10 years flat I think. Some may be granted shorter period.

In the early 90s, I got 'INDEFINITE' US visa, but later withdrawn. :(

After 911, they have withdrawn all such privileges.

Thai AirAsia X Gets Air Operator License

October 11, 2013

Malaysia's AirAsia X, the long-haul arm of Asia's largest low-cost airline, has received an air operator's license for its first overseas foray, Thai AirAsia X.

Thai AirAsia X, a joint venture AirAsia X established last month with the head of sister company Thai AirAsia and an advisor to the Thai prime minister was granted the license by the Department of Civil Aviation of Thailand.

AirAsia X revealed the move in a stock exchange filing on Friday.

AirAsia X’s new affiliate in Thailand is gearing up to launch services in early 2014 with an initial fleet of two A330-300s and an initial network of three destinations. At least one destination in Australia and North Asia is expected to be served from a base at Bangkok’s Don Muang Airport.

Thai AirAsia X (TAAX) is one of three new low-cost carriers in Thailand but is strategically well positioned as it will be the country’s first medium/long-haul LCC. It will also have the advantage of being on the receiving end of Thailand’s largest short-haul LCC, Thai AirAsia.

TAAX will be the first of potentially several new joint venture carriers from Malaysia-based AirAsia X, which is using proceeds from a Jun-2013 IPO to accelerate expansion in line with a new multi-hub strategy. Indonesia is in line to host the second AirAsia X affiliate, potentially launching by the end of 2014 with a base in Bali. The Philippines for now is not being considered for an AirAsia X affiliate, although it remains a long-term possibility.

I think the future of Thai Air Asia X is much brighter than Air Asia X... especially after Air Asia Group finally receives its first A350-900 as the 359 can serve all the Scandinavian cities non-stop from Don Mueang. Leisure traffics between Thailand and Scandinavian countries have always been very big and strong. A lot of potential there. I wouldn't be surprised if the growth of Thai Air Asia X outpace that of Air Asia X.

Fully agree. I think there is better O&D traffic in Thailand than Malaysia for leisure market which is the market Air Asia aiming for. Similarly for Indonesia as well especially Bali. However not sure about the market for outbound traffic from the locals in Thailand and Indonesia though.

From my experience with D7 on AUS-KUL, many pax are on connecting to Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. Some are foreign tourists to these countries and some are resident of these countries.

It's actually interesting to see AirAsia booking engine on the long haul connecting routes, like from SYD or MEL to regional routes, one can choose either stopover in KUL or DMK. But, AirAsia's network is still bigger than Thai AirAsia.
