Airbus A220 (Formerly Bombardier C Series)

Airbus (EADSY)on Monday announced it was acquiring a majority stake in rival Bombardier's embattled C Series airliner program, reshaping the landscape in the transatlantic battle against plane maker Boeing.


The C Series had come under attack this year from Boeing, (BA) which alleged that Bombardier had sold the 100 to 150-seat jet to Delta Air Lines at "absurdly low prices." The U.S. Department of Commerce has preliminarily levied a 300% tariff on the plane's imports, setting up a diplomatic row that has drawn in the Canadian and U.K. governments.


As part of the deal, Airbus will acquire 50.01% of the program and Bombardier and Investissement Québec will own approximately 31% and 19% respectively.

Don't think so - the 717 was near obsolete whereas the C Series is a brand new, state of the art design.

 

A very good buy by Airbus - it has bought the next gen replacement for the A318/319/320 off the shelf.

 

The A320 family can now be updated to compete with Boeing's MoM or NSA aircraft. Optimised for 200-250 pax, it can have a bigger and better carbon fibre wing and it won't take too long for a new 321/322 to emerge!

 

BTW, if the deal goes through, Airbus will own 100% of the C series in about 7½ years. So I don't think it will be killed off so quickly!

C series fit nicely between A320 and CRJ, and there is nothing to stop Bombardier to grow C series or develop new model to compete with A320 in the future. It is Airbus strategic interest to keep Bombardier close.

Only 51 A319neo are sold! Maybe the saving from improvement is no as good as the larger A320neo. I think C-series will slot in nicely below A320neo.

There are Embraer and comac for Boeing.

Are these available for free?

 

BTW, Airbus only bought the Cseries programme, not the Bombardier company.

I bet Boeing didnt see this coming.

I think Boeing were being very cocky. They did not think Airbus would be able to get the Cseries as there is Canadian govt. involvement in the programme.

 

But Bombardier must have gotten extra desperate after the US tariff was imposed and the only way to avoid it was to assemble the aircraft in the US Airbus factory. That will make the Cseries the same as the 787 assembly that Boeing runs.

 

Yes, Boeing shot themselves in the foot!

What has Airbus got in the CSeries?

 

CSeries was developed as a step-up regional airliner from Bombardier’s CRJ series. It started more as a me-too than a world-beater. Gradually the design grew in capability.
In the end, the CSeries became more than a step-up regional. The present CSeries transports 100 to 150 passengers on routes of up to 3,300nm. These are flights lasting over seven hours.
And it flies these routes with better passenger comfort than a Boeing 737 MAX or Airbus A320neo.
These are non-regional routes flown with non-regional comfort levels by a non-regional aircraft.
So, we need to change the yardstick from regional to mainline. Now defined as mainline, 130 to 240 passengers, covering 3,000nm routes (which is what you need for a transcontinental flight in the USA).
The competition is then Airbus A320neo line and Boeing’s 737 MAX series.
Embraer’s E-jet doesn’t qualify in this segment. It’s a regional airliner, designed to carry 75 to 130 passengers and on routes of less than 2,500nm.

In October, Airbus announced the acquisition of Bombardier’s next-generation C Series airliner. Now, it looks like Airbus is thinking about renaming its new jet.

The Bombardier C Series may soon be renamed the A200-family, sources told Bloomberg’s Benjamin D Katz and Frederic Tomesco. More specifically, the CS100 and CS300 would be redesignated the A210 and A230.

Boeing said on Thursday that it planned to take over the commercial jet business of the Brazilian aerospace company Embraer, a move into smaller jetliners that mirrors a deal last fall by rival Airbus to join in a partnership with Bombardier.

 

Boeing would own 80 percent of Embraers commercial aircraft and services arm, which the companies said was worth $4.75 billion. Embraer would own the rest.

Thought they will name it A200 ;) Obviously they saw this as the little brother of the A320s.

I thought the name was well chosen - A220 for the link to the A320. The -100 and -300 versions link it back to the CS100 and CS300. This also leaves room for an A220-500 should they think it is viable.

The new line will likely start operating sometime around 2021, CEO Philippe Balducchi says. Airbus has ample land in Mirabel to expand.
