KLIA MTB Expansion

Recommended Posts

A new terminal is expected to be built at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to expand its total capacity to 100 million passengers a year, said Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abd Aziz Kaprawi.

Airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is expected to submit a proposal for the airport's third terminal in the next two to three years after detailed studies, he told Malaysian reporters on Malindo Air's maiden flight to Perth, Australia.

He said last year, KLIA's main terminal handled 23 million passengers a year, almost near its full capacity of 25 million passengers, while klia2 was also reaching its full

MTB reaching full capacity... something new. and the most surprising thing is KLIA2 reaching its full. A well planned project, you build an airport and that airport get to its full cap in a short while, either the airliners are expanded super aggressively, or you sucks in planning.

Use klia2 as next full service terminal and build a really cost terminal

Perhaps this is just talk of the eventual construction of SAT-B. Worthwhile now if construction and material costs are expected to be less soon - although at the rate the MYR is going, tough to say for certain.

SAT-B has in recent years been envisaged as a potential base for all OneWorld traffic, with the remaining SAT-A for SkyTeam, STAR and non-alliance carriers... Would be a smart move, especially if MH is consolidating its position as the best regional network and frequency for OneWorld members to capitalize... The biggest problem with that concept is QF hub at SIN, with 3K providing the regional network... including KUL...

Better for the likes of BA, QR and even CX or JL to capitalize on for the smaller regional destinations..

I hope the Mods create a new thread for this discussion. It is a new terminal and deserves its own thread!

Thanks Mods! :)

It is really creating news out of nothing. 2 to 3 yrs to do some studies, and then submit proposal to revisit such studies in another 2 to 3 yrs or to decide to build said terminal in 3 yrs from that point in time should the traffic reach a certain point, otherwise do nothing until the next PR event when MAHB may then announce its next possible move.

Dont get too excited as this is merely regurgitating of what has been said in the past and will be repeated on a "slow news day" during a relatively low key PR event. Move along now....nothing to see here...

I hope MAHB is sensible enough to call it Terminal 3.

It'll be a joke if we end up with KLIA, KLIA2, KLIA3. They're different terminals and not separate airports, for goodness sake.

If this is Satellite B, Terminal 3 is also "incorrect" because it is part of MTB (Terminal 1).

I think the proper terminal numbering would be:

- Terminal 1A (MTB)

- Terminal 1B (Satellite A)

- Terminal 1C (Satellite B )

- Terminal 2 (klia2)

Or simply:

- Terminal 1 (MTB, Satellite A and Satellite B )

- Terminal 2 (klia2)

Was considered, but eventually something else was (is going to be?) proposed.

Cannot put all eggs in one basket and expect MH to stay in OneWorld. Even in the short term, that is not a given.. So... stay tuned :)

MAHB will release an updated biz plan for 2016-2020 in due time. A lot more will be revealed I think.

BTW, Satellite B is not a given.

So:

- This is about an entirely new Terminal 3 at KLIA.

- MH is going to exit oneworld soon.

- There will never be a Satellite B.

If it is not Satellite B, unless the terminal is planned at the area opposite MTB (behind the MTB ATC Tower area) per original master plan, how to access this Terminal 3?

Shouldn't they focus on Satellite B first?

Is there really enough traffic to justify a third terminal, especially when MAB is cutting routes

Guess it costs too little to be practical and build Sat-B.. A third and separate terminal at high costs will grease more palms..

Sorry, but the concept sounds really idiotic. It is frustrating and shameful to see good infrastructure and forward planning going to waste..

Unfortunately, that is Malaysia for you - the acute lack of long term vision.

The original KLIA masterplan has already been torn to bits with the building of klia2. So whatever follows will probably be something dreamed up by the current people in power at MAHB to suit their needs.

The way things are going, it may be better to plan for another LCCT as premium traffic is not the strength of KUL. So, a SAT-2 might be sufficient to cater for growth in FSC traffic for the foreseeable future.

Anyone has some spare cash lying somewhere in their couch? I am planning to set up a construction company and join list of suppliers....

Please PM me.....Thank you.

On a more serious note, they have yet to resolve all the pending issues with KLIA2, now they are jumping on the gun with Terminal 3/ Satellite B/ Terminal 1C.......or whatever it is called...

Passenger traffic will continue to rise regardless of how messed up KLIA2 is. If they wait for all the issues to be resolved, which will likely be many years down the road (if ever), it might be too late. Our neighbor down south is already preparing for T5, even though T4 is still under construction.

When I said that not necessarily Satellite B, I meant it doesn't necessarily mean build a new terminal complex altogether.

Maybe MTB and present satellite can be expanded?

As KK Lee mentioned, endless possibilities... MAHB has to study all.

Do also note, this statement about "Terminal 3" came from the minister.. Not MAHB......... Please ponder upon that..

They have provisions for MTB expansion on the right for more check in counters. The contact pier can also be lengthened to accomodate a few more gates. They are all in the original Kisho masterplan.

I read it somewhere that MAHB will do this first before they start to build the new sats terminal.

Whatever they are planning to do, please do some refurbishment to MTB if they ever decided to construct, or to extend whatever terminals there. Mumbai new terminal really put KUL to shame. You dont even start comparing Changi. Even the new Jakarta Terminal 3/4
