D7's A330neo Cabin Config - All Y, 440 pax

Recommended Posts

D7 made a mistake with seating before when it installed those rigid clam shell seats. They duly ripped them out before too long.

440 seats will mean that seat pitch will be reduced from the current 32" to something closer to 29". Unless we have a new seat design, it will be highly uncomfortable for a flight over 4 hours. More uncomfortable than on AK.

Assumed d7 a330neo break even is about 70% or 280 pax, equivalent to almost the full load of fsc a330. Not sure there are many profitable routes for d7.

It will be 30 seat pitch. But i heard if they ommit certain parts of the cabin and reducing its range. A 32 seat pitch cabin config is possible.

I thought they want to add more premium economy, no? 30-inch with slimline seats gonna be unpleasant with 9-abreast. Hopefully D7 will retain their quiet zone.

This is just many options that AirAsia X is looking at when the neo delivery starts. They are thinking to replace some of current ceo with all Y seats to use on high demand short haul route. They may use some of the new neo within shorthaul route too. One thing for sure premium economy is here to stay with D7, they are printing money for Group. Knowing how agile AirAsia is, anything could happen.

IIRC, the economy benefits of the Neo only begins when the routes are longer - I think Airbus mentioned 3,000 nm.

So using the Neo for short haul does not make sense. It would be better to reconfigure a Ceo for that purpose.

But yes, D7 is always looking to evolve their business model and needs to study the various options available. They were also quick the learn when they have made mistakes in the past.

With a333, d7 has a tight window to juggle yield and load to be profitable. Except a few routes, not surprise there is a profit transfer between d7 and ak on fly thru service to keep d7 sustainable.

Hope they retain those flatbeds on the A330NEOs. Just 12 premium flatbed like they currently have is enough.

This is what was stated in the Q1, 2017 performance media release.

Where will those NEOs go? Obviously Europe's out of the picture since they won't have the range.

TF has confirmed that they are abandoning Europe - its not good for business!

AirAsis x is flying.Model is working. We have decided that ultra long haul is not relevant now.Won't get seduced into price wars over london

We will stick to the 8 to 9 hours. Our Focus will be asia. With the odd route like hawaii which is actually 8 hours form japan.

We let the full service guys fight it out over Europe. Many of them bleeding so so much.

Our model is really working. With fly through from airasia. Turnaround well on its way. Second quarter will complete it.

Europe will never work for d7 unless they opt and run the sectors like how scoot and norwegian does which is a little too premium for them.

They just don't have the right equipment - A339 won't do it and A350/B787, too expensive.

Something game changing needs to be in place before they can think about it - London is particularly bad because the APD kills any idea of a really low cost fare. Going to Paris and then connecting via Eurostar is more economic.

AirAsia X has those A350 on order, they should just take delivery asap if they are really interested in returning Europe. With the recent statement it seems both A350s and returning to Europe plan are in back burner.
