Airbus plans repair site in Thailand

Recommended Posts

BANGKOK -- Airbus looks to open an aircraft maintenance yard in eastern Thailand, hoping to capture rising demand as low-cost carriers sharply increase the number of planes flying in Asia.

The European aircraft builder is conducting a feasibility study with state-owned Thai Airways International to set up the yard at the U-tapao airport, located in an economic development zone in eastern Thailand. A maintenance, repair and overhaul -- or MRO -- facility would handle inspections involving disassembly as well. The airport, close to tourist destination Pattaya and the coastal industrial hub, is scheduled for expansion as a third flight hub serving the Bangkok metropolitan area.

Malaysia keeps losing out to our neighbours! Wow.

Cost of doing business in Malaysia is expensive and expected to rise further.

Malaysia keeps losing out to our neighbours! Wow.

Airbus was part owner of Sepang Aircraft Engineering in the beginning and it is still an Airbus MRO facility.

However, Airbus will be selling its holdings to Airasia - not sure if this sale is completed. It looks like they are quitting Malaysia to set up in Thailand.

There is minimum wage for Malaysia (which can be a good thing or bad thing depend on which angle you see it), not in Thailand. So for Thai people, it is either take it or leave it if they apply for job.

That's said, Garuda Indonesia MRO arm, GAMCO is also very competitive. They are certified to maintain or repair a wide range of aircraft type.

SIA Engineering is just down South of us, costly, yet you have the quality (not saying our Malaysian counterpart do shoddy work, don't misunderstand). LH Teknik is at Manila, even AirAsia X and Virgin Atlantic (yes, the one from UK!) sent their aircraft there on occasion, so the competition in very high in the region.
