Heads will roll at Boeing's Chicago HQ.

Boeings penny wise, pound foolish mistake. Care so much to contest and block Bombardiers C series whilst they have no direct competitor to said aircraft. I believe Deltas decision have somehow been influenced by Boeings antics regarding the issue.

Well, isn't the A321neo the closest replacement in terms of specs to the 757, which is why so many US airlines are ordering it?

Yes, I tend to agree that it was mostly (95%) because the A321Neo's suitability for the task and that Delta Tech Ops will have the maintenance capability for the PW GTF. Maybe 5% of the decision was influenced by their C-series political problems.
