Kuala Lumpur is studying options for replacing its Sukhoi Su-30MKM fighters, but its poor acquisition record suggests a long process.

Media reports from Malaysia quote defence minister Mohamad Sabu as saying that studies about new jets are underway, with an eye to replace the jets with new aircraft from Russia - he did not mention specific types.

He stressed, however, that cost is a key consideration. Prime minister Mahathir Mohamad was also quoted recently as saying that Malaysia needs to be mindful of its budget when considering new combat aircraft.

So if we buy Russian jets again, do we get another seat on next Soyuz expedition?

Meanwhile the F/A-18s soldier on...

And Malaysia should do well to learn their lessons from procuring Russian defence equipment.

Like most consumers in this country, politicians often only look at initial price tag and disregard life cycle cost analysis. Russian engine need to overhaul after a few hundred hours in service compared with a few thousands hours of western engine.

We had cost saving deal with the option to take Kuwaitt's used F/A-18C hornets. Cant deal much on superhornets even if we have the budget. US congress limitation will give us third rate weapons.

On another note gov has cancelled the littlebird helicopters and artillery tanks meant for Sabah's Esscom. Every week theres incursion on Sabah waters and our navy is ill equip with no helicopters or speedboats. Before talking about jets best the gov would get something to survey the seas and enhance the maritime on east coast.

Over heard the gomen has paid substantial sums to little bird local agent. how much u.s manufacturer has been paid is another matter or question. doubt u.s. manufacturer would agreed to cancellation without hefty penalty.

believe scan eagle uav will be used in esscom theater.

EU is only banning palm oil in biofuel production not consumption or others. Biofuel need subsidize to be economical and is natural for EU to favour plant oil produced in EU.
