Low-cost airline for Perak

IPOH: A low-cost airline will be set up and based at the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport here, which will then be turned into a low-fare hub for domestic flights.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali said an investor had indicated interest in operating the airline in joint venture with Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Bhd.

Declining to name the entrepreneur, Tajol Rosli said the airline would be using propeller planes for its domestic flights.

The investor planned to use planes that could take up to 42 passengers per aircraft, he added.

“It will be cheaper, and passengers can fly first and pay later,” he said after launching the state-level 2005 National Cooperative Day celebration at the Perak Techno Trade Centre here yesterday.

Initial destinations for the airline include Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Alor Star, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

Tajol Rosli said the investor would be getting the green light to operate from the Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Ministry and Transport Ministry.

He noted that the move to allow the investor to set up the airline would increase passenger volume at the airport.

“What is important is for more passengers to use the airport. We cannot have an airport to cater to only one flight a day.

“With the airline having cheap domestic flights to places of interest in the state, we can have more people using the airport,” he added.

“Now we have a situation where foreign tourists have to take a taxi if they want to travel to Ipoh from KLIA (KL International Airport),” he added.

:o Wow;

1. 42pax... ATR? F27?

2. Pax fly first, pay later ??? :o

3. Kuching and Kota Kinabalu... from Ipoh in prop.. can lah but how long??

4. All this because Ipoh got only 1 flt per day,

why don't turn it into aviation park or something... instead airport requires airliners.

But then again they're merely using 42-seater aircraft, so they should be able to fill them up rather easily provided if the air fares are competitive cause as it is now many people commute from Ipoh to those few cities daily so it could all be lucrative after all.

A publicity stunt! A few months back, the press announced that IPH was selected by a foreign firm to launch low orbit space flights in a few years time.

Sounds like a joke. Fly first, pay later means " only credit cards and charge cards are accepted as forms of payment."

Could quite possibly be a publicity stunt. So I guess its best to maintain in fingers crossed mode until something really concrete takes place.

Was catching up with news update on Bernama's website and in part of this article, the following was quoted by the Minister of Transport, Chan Kong Choy:

"Chan also quashed talk of the introduction of a second budget carrier, saying that he had "not heard anything about it." Monday, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli said that a low-cost airline would be set up and based at the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport in Ipoh, which would be turned into a low-fare hub for domestic flights.

Tajol Rosli said that an investor had indicated interest in operating the airline in joint venture with Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Bhd.

"I have not heard anything about it yet but I don't think it is necessary to have a second budget carrier," Chan said.

Malaysia now has one no-frills airline -- Air Asia -- which is spreading its wings not only to major domestic destinations but also important regional international airports."

A lot of politicians will talk this and that without really thinking much about it.

This new airline? Don't think I would want a job with it. Maybe the want you to work first, pay later......as in never.

Does ERL actually do that ? Hop on at KLIA and pay when you hop off at KL Sentral ?

Yes, there is a ticketing counter just before the exit.

Anyway, what a silly idea to fly first, pay later.....encouraging people to live on credit.

What if you don't pay at the end of the journey? Will they put you back onto the plane and fly you back to the origin?
