BANGKOK (REUTERS) - Thailand's Asia Aviation Pcl, the owner of low-cost carrier Thai AirAsia, on Monday (Feb 25) said it was considering to buy a stake in rival Nok Airlines, sending its share prices soaring.

"The company is currently considering whether such investment is appropriate," chief financial officer, Santhat Sanguandikul, said in a statement, referring to acquiring shares from the billionaire Jurangkool family, sending Nok Air's share prices up 13 per cent.

The company has a market capitalisation of 9.3 billion baht (S$401 million) and the stock is currently trading at 3.06 baht, its highest since March 2018.

NOK is near the end, cheap to buy.

A lot of Slots at DMK and you can close NokScoot on the LCC-Longhaul market out of DMK.

I think if proceed, this will be an investment by the Asia Aviation Plc (AAP) on its own. As there is no indication on the percentage of shares that AAP will acquire, it is safe to speculate that it will not be a majority shareholding and thus this investment will not have any impact on operation of both airlines.

It is actually difficult to imagine the 2 airlines being merged. First of all, Nok Air and NokScoot have 0 Airbus aircraft for fleet commonality with the AirAsia Group.

I had a dejavu with this news, recalling the time when the AirAsia Group did seriously considering taking over Batavia Air to expand Indonesia AirAsia. However, the deal collapsed at an advance stage and as we all know, Batavia Air went into bankruptcy shortly after.

Do you know that AAP ist just the Holding for Thai AirAsia and nothing more?

And is owned by 45% by AirAsia....

They cannot do anything "on their own"

All Jets from NOK are leased, so you can say goodbye to all the jets maybe within a year or 2. And then turn over the slots in the morning to Thai AirAsia.

And of course end then the cooperation with SQ on Nokscoot.

You can be sure that AAP will not buy just 5% stake on NOK to give them some fresh cash ...

I see this as a defensive move - it is better for the Airasia owners to also own Nok Air to prevent competitors (e.g. SQ/Nokscoot onwers) from acquiring them.

As for the fleet - it is never easy to get out of leases unless you are prepared to pay the penalties. Philippines Airasia took a long time to get rid of their legacy non-CFM56 engined planes because they had to wait for the leases to expire.

Could also mean that SQ may have priority in acquiring NOK. This way SQ gets the NOK network, change the brand to Scoot. Crew familiarisation won't be a problem as SQ's subsidiary MI is Boeing 737 user.

Thats not possible cause the majority of the airline must stay in Thai hands.

A trade official warned Thursday that aviation giant AirAsia’s proposed acquisition of rival Nok Air may violate antitrust laws.

In recent days the trade floor at Stock Exchange of Thailand has been awash with speculation about AirAsia’s plans to buy a majority stake in Nok from the Jurangkool family. Nok shares have increased in value by 42 percent since word of the takeover came out last week, up from 2.28 baht to 3.24 baht per share on the Thai exchange.

Nok Air reported a loss of 970 million baht in 2018. Asia Aviation said it had net profits of 340 million baht in that year.

“There will be shareholders likely to give up their shares in Nok Air. It is possible that with the purchase, AirAsia will be able to get more slots out from Nok Air,” he said.

Because of the increased capacity injection, Bangkok’s two international airports are reaching the saturation point

Nok seems to have serious problems now:

The Transport Ministry is keeping a close eye on troubled budget carrier Nok Air after a "worrying" sign on its balance sheet was detected, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT).

Over in India, the regulatory authority has temporarily allocated some of Jet Airways' airport slots to other airlines. Will the Thai authorities do the same thing if Nok finds no buyers?
