JAL names new LCC Zipair Tokyo

Japan Airlines has revealed that Zipair Tokyo will be the name of its new medium- and long-haul, low-cost carrier that will launch in the summer of 2020.

 

The startup has also filed its application for an air operators certificate on March 8, which specifies that it will operate Boeing 787-8s initially on routes from Tokyo Narita to Bangkok Suvarnhabhumi and Seoul Incheon airports.

Wonder if Zipair Tokyo will be to JAL what Scoot is to SQ and take over certain routes from the mother company.And will it have KUL be like Cathay and Cathay Dragon.

KA is not an LCC.

This is a rather conservative start up - only 2 aircraft added per year for the first 5 years. Looks like they are doing an experiment as they are not committing too many resources to it.

Not saying KA is an LCC.

 

As in handing over the NRT-KUL route to Zipair tokyo, like how cathay handed KL to Cathay Dragon.

 

CX transferred KUL to its full-service regional wing. How is this similar to JL and its new LCC?

I suspect JAL will transfer a few - primarily leisure - routes  to Zipair Tokyo but I can see Zipair open other routes which JAL can´t serve sufficiently profitable (like JAL makes just a thin margin). They will even open new routes that JAL never considered before because these wouldn´t be profitable (with JAL´s high labour/production costs and expected relatively low average yield) under any circumstances

So, Zipair Tokyo will be very much like AirCanada Rouge or Eurowings.

After all Zipair Tokyo is primarily an attempt to lower production costs. I expect Zipair Tokyo to be kind of a hybrid carrier not fully LCC (like Air Asia (X) ) but also not full service.

We´ll have to wait and see how much comfort/service for passengers will be stripped off in comparison to JAL.

ZIPAIR Plan to Launch Cargo Flights to Bangkok

Tokyo, May 21, 2020 - ZIPAIR Tokyo submitted an application to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan for the launch of cargo-only flights between Tokyo Narita and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport from June 3, 2020. Based on the global impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), ZIPAIR Tokyo's launch of passenger flights has been temporarily postponed.

As airlines continue to suspend flights, the need for air cargo services is in demand. As such, ZIPAIR Tokyo announced the plan to launch cargo-only flights utilizing the carrier's Boeing 787-8 aircraft between the two countries. As for the passenger services start-up. We would like to announce when the date is confirmed.
