Condor Airlines in Northern winter 2018/19 season is expanding its network to South East Asia, with new Frankfurt Kuala Lumpur operation.

Operating on seasonal basis from 05NOV18 to 22APR19, the airline will serve this route 3 times a week, on board Thomas Cook Airlines UKs Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

 

Reservation for this route opened this morning.

Finally someone filling in the gap. I find it hard to believe that there is not a market between FRA-KUL considering that there were 8-12 flights/week btwn MH and LH for many years.

I know a lot of the slack has been taken up by SQ and the ME3 for European connections..

Actually there is a market between FRA and KUL - just not the type that LH/MH can afford to fly at the moment. After all, Germany is Malaysia's largest trading partner in the EU. Both MH and LH doesn't have the right aircraft to serve this route. LH was stuck with fuel guzzlers 340s on this route whilst MH had 772s before they were retired (and 380 is definitely not possible). And it was extremely difficult for both LH and MH to sustain this flight since neither had beyond agreements after reaching the end-point.

I think that is the mistake MH made with other airlines. I think for a market like KUL, perhaps codesharing with the respective home airline on the main routes and onwards to other destinations would have helped?

 

For example:

 

Maybe KUL-CDG could have been 3 weekly AF and 4 weekly MH with connections onwards on both ends.

Ditto with KUL-FRA between MH and LH.

 

I know AF wasnt very Interested in MH and KUL for a long time. When they finally returned to KUL, their relationship with MH was already so bad (especially bad since MH has been very close to KLM and was toying with the idea of joining SkyTeam) that MH just decided to out-price them out of the market by putting a daily A380 service, dropping the yields considerably!

 

Anyway, Im just a keyboard warrior MH and KUL lover, dont know much about the precise ins and outs of the difficulties MH faced over years on all fronts. Just my tuppence worth of opinion

Perhaps, this is where MH can deploy their spare A350s to - a 4X weekly service to FRA.

Condor revises Kuala Lumpur operation in W18

 

Condor in the last few days gradually updated planned Frankfurt – Kuala Lumpur service, set to commence in winter 2018/19 season. Previously scheduled to commence on 05NOV18, the new launch date is now scheduled on 01NOV18. The airline will continue to operate 3 weekly flights, with operational day, schedule and aircraft changes.

This route is now scheduled with Boeing 767, instead of Thomas Cook Airlines UK A330-200. Business Class service will be offered with the aircraft change.

Hopefully they will do well being the only player on the route

 

Yeah, looks like there may be some business class demand too as this aircraft has a small business cabin.

To the layman: having the ability to issue a single ticket for both airlines, and being able to check your bag through. In case of IRROPS you can also be FIMed onto another carrier which has an interline agreement with the offending airline.

 

Im sure someone can explain this in more technical/accurate terms but thats what I understand as an occasional traveller :)

Direct flight between Malaysia and Germany on Condor Airlines

 

KUALA LUMPUR: Condor Airlines landed at the KL International Airport (KLIA1) for the first time this morning, making it the 58th passenger airline to use the airport.

 

It will be the only airline to offer a direct flight between Malaysia and Germany. Its Kuala Lumpur (KUL)-Frankfurt (FRA) route will be three times a week on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. The FRA-KUL route will be on Monday, Thursday and Saturday.

 

For its inaugural flight here, Condor Airlines' B767-300 aircraft flew from Frankfurt International Airport in Germany to KLIA1 with Germany's ambassador to Malaysia, Sarah Nava Rani Al Bakri Devadason, on board.

 

Group of Airlines Director of Customer Operations, Managing Director & Accountable Manager of Condor Airlines, Christian Schmitt, were also on the flight.

 

The passengers were treated to a cultural performance by dancers managed by Tourism Malaysia. They were greeted by Deputy Minister of Transport, Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar and Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and culture Tuan Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, Deputy Head of Mission And Charge D' Affairs Of German Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, David Krivanek and Chief Strategy Officer of Malaysia Airports Azli Mohamed.

 

"Condor Airlines is the 58th passenger airline to arrive in KLIA Main Terminal and I would also like to share that KLIA has seen growth with 3.2% passenger growth as of Sept 2018, " said Chief Strategy Officer of Malaysia Airlines, Azli Mohamed.

 

On the new route, Schmitt said Condor Airlines is excited to be the only airline offering a direct flight connection between Malaysia and Germany.

 

"Our flights from Kuala Lumpur to Frankfurt provide Malaysian and Southeast Asian travellers with varied opportunities to discover Europe and Frankfurt as one of the most important economic centres in Europe," he said.

 

"Likewise, European travellers have the chance to discover beautiful Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia. By connecting two cities that are of the same importance for their respective regions, we can promote economic and cultural exchange. This is something we as an airline always particularly encourage".

Here in Germany Condor offers the route to KL very often for a very cheap price.

Looks not good...

Yes, we have seen return fares offered at around MYR 1,700.

 

LH suspended their services some time ago despite no direct competition. Most pax tend to use the ME3 airlines. Lately, it seems that QR are offering the best fares.

Not necessarily so. Most airlines usually offer deals during the first few months to promote awareness. They've changed from Thomas Cook 330 to Condor own's 767 with real (albeit angled) business class cabin and also made it year-round instead of seasonal.

 

They've also partnered up with MH for beyond KUL connections (as opposed to LH where almost all of their pax ends at KUL).

Is there really no market for non-stop flights between Western Europe and Malaysia apart from LHR and AMS?

 

I was kinda hoping that Lufthansa might return to KUL with a Dreamliner or A350 but now I am not sure.

Is there really no market for non-stop flights between Western Europe and Malaysia apart from LHR and AMS?

 

I was kinda hoping that Lufthansa might return to KUL with a Dreamliner or A350 but now I am not sure.

Seems like it for now. But Condor's KUL flights were supposed to be seasonal to begin with (they continued on during summer of this year tho). W19/20 will see equipment change from 767 to all Y 332 (frequency down from 3x to 2x compared to W18/19). And it seems like the last flight will operate ex-KUL on 17JAN20.

 

There's a market between DE and MY, just not high enough yields for either LH or MH to launch a flight between the two countries. Both LH and MH doesn't have a partner at the other end, so basically they are only carrying pax to/from KUL for LH and FRA/MUC for MH. The weak MYR and EUR doesn't help either :)

 

LH's 350s are based in MUC and that's even a smaller market to/from MY than FRA.

Bottom line is that Europe is not a major destination for Malaysians and Malaysia is not a major destination for Europeans. That is why we don't have many airlines operating direct flights between Europe and Malaysia. Even Muslim European countries like Turkey don't attract that many visitors.

Im not sure that is right. The figures I read online are that total trade between Malaysia and Germany are around EUR14 billion similar to EUR14 billion for Singapore.
