Seems like lighting problem.

If lights are out, then there is definitely a lighting problem, particularly in dead of night

Could it have been caused by lightning incident though ? :D

Looks like the airport is closed until further notice. All MH flights at BKI currently are on unscheduled nightstop. Passenger affected will be placed in hotels in kk. Source from MH FB.

Two flights from Seoul were supposed to land more than an hour. Any idea where they are now ?

damn bloody contractor took too long a time to complete all the upgrading works! Even some shoddy jobs with surface depression in Terminal 2 apron. Took them like forever to complete extension on runway 20, one of the reason why ILS have yet to be comissioned. And now, the lighting problems. Double whammy for MAHB.

Approach light for runway 02 unserviceable. With no ILS and no approach lights, night operations are not possible.

Not sure if lights will be restored around midnight. Just heard a lot of delays to BKI tonight on company frequency. Add that to the delay due to KUL weather tonight, the number of passengers due to the Hari raya Aidil Adha and crew running out of duty hours, looks like a very unsettling situation tonight.

MH and AK diverted to LBU & KCH. I read stranded pax comments on FB. Very funny cos they blame the airlines though the problem come from airport.

Both MAS and Air Asia Facebook page are flooded with hate messages. Some people were asking Air Asia how come there was no free transfer and hotel accommodation for them... :D

Anyway, the airport has resumed operation I believe. From the Incheon flight information board, the new arrival time for OZ758 is now 1.10pm (was 6.25am) while for ZE502, the flight will land at 2.12pm (was 6.40am).

Runway lights are needed for night operations, so even if they are not restored the is no problem for day ops. We will know tonight if the lights are truly restored.

You have to start wondering what has caused this blackout and why the delay in restoring normal function

Ok lah, it's a given that s41+ happens, but it's how consequences are dealt with thereafter that matters more

And if it takes more than a day to turn on a few light bulbs ........ ? :)

(perhaps it has something to do with Sabahans' indifference to blackouts - possibly in our genes already :D)

Yeah, that would be about the time I saw an OZ'ish thing flying off from way off distance

Missed rare opportunity to catch that elusive night time visitor in KK daylight :)

Could that be the work of the ghosts which escaped from the terminals during construction :p

Apparently this kind of thing happened in Australia too, albeit non aviation related.

KK airport likely to be closed Friday night as well; RMAF flying in portable runway lights as temporary measure

KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu Internationl Airport (KKIA) here is likely to remain close for a second night as officials seek Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) assistance to put up temporary portable lights on the runway to allow landings.

It is learned that the portable lights were being flown in from the RMAF base in Subang and might arrive late Friday as an emergency measure to facilitate late night landings.

Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB) and its engineers were still trying to find what triggered a major blackout on the runway at 6.20pm Thursday.

MAB, which has remained tight-lipped over the incident or steps being taken to resolve it, is keeping the airport open for now and is very likely to shut down the airport again by 6.30pm if the lights are not available.

At least 4,000 passengers, including many returning home for Aidiladha celebrations, were left stranded after 40 flights were cancelled or rescheduled following the sudden closure of the airport Thursday.

Meanwhile, in a statement Friday evening, MAB said the runway would remain closed for night operations until 10.00pm while it made attempts to rectify the situation.

"Efforts are being made to install a backup portable lighting system to enable restricted night operations.

"Further updates will be made in due course as soon as the backup portable lighting system is in place," it added.
