MAHB worker critically injured in accident at Subang airport runway

Monday, 18 Mar 2019 4:44 PM MYT

PETALING JAYA: An accident involving an airport engineering vehicle and a private aircraft occurred at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport runway in Subang early Monday.

A Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) said the driver of the vehicle was critically injured in the 3.20am incident, with the Airport Fire and Rescue Service team arriving at the scene one minute later.

“We are saddened that our employee, who was the driver of the vehicle, was critically injured. He is currently undergoing surgery and we are ensuring that he receives the best medical care, as we pray for his recovery,” MAHB said in a statement.

It added that the passengers and cabin crew of the aircraft were unharmed during the incident.

MAHB said some arriving flights were affected as they were held back at the airport of origin during the process of clearing the debris on the runway, with flight operations resuming at 9am.

“In the meantime, Malaysia Airports has formed an investigation team and is working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) to investigate the root cause of the accident.

“The Transport Ministry has also activated its Air Accident Investigation division to carry out a thorough investigation of the incident,” it said.

What had actually happened? The news articles seemed to be doing their best to suppress info on how the accident happened.

It was a Bombardier 9M-TST (Berjaya Group) left wings leading edge that struck the vehicle. Did the aircraft land when the vehicle was on the runway?

The news reports were very vague about what actually happened.

There's a reason why the accident is under investigation.

They don't know what happened!

Looking at the picture it seems it's not your typical ground vehicle bumping and denting an aircraft. The left wing appears to have sliced right through the roof pillars of the vehicle at a high speed.

If tower cleared the a/c to land while the vehicle was still on the runway then this is a serious safety oversight. Somebody up in the tower could have been sleeping on the job unaware of the ground vehicle. Either that or the vehicle strayed onto the runway, which is also a serious safety oversight.

If anyone can dig up past NOTAM of the airfield to see if there's any mention of runway closure/repair work it would shed some light on how this may have happened.

An investigation is also done to understand how the event had happened, not just to determine what had happened - if this was not already known.

Usually, when there is a collision between aircraft and ground vehicle, the aircraft is rarely at fault. Aircraft have the right of way if there is ever a conflict.

Subang runway crash: Plane received clearance to land but findings show weak SOP

CAAM should consider enforcing a rule that all airside ground vehicles be equipped with ADSB transponders so that they can be accurately tracked.
