Era of free meals on short-haul flights to end: BA chief

Recommended Posts

British Airways' chief executive Alex Cruz has defended its decision to end free meals on its short-haul flights and predicted that all airlines would eventually follow its example.

Speaking at the UK Aviation Club in London on 6 December, Cruz said the IAG-owned carrier's introduction of a buy-on-board service for economy-class passengers on its domestic and short-haul services at the beginning of the year was "absolutely the right" decision to take.

He describes the free food and drink services still available on board rivals' short-haul flights as a "fad" and says he is "absolutely convinced" that the two remaining large European carriers that still offer it will end the practice in the coming months.

Who really wants to eat on a short haul flight?

A BoB program is good enough, especially if the BoB food tastes much better than the typical airline food.

Well, on the KUL-SIN flight, most people would just fly and not bother with the food.

I've flown BA on the morning LHR > Belfast City and LHR > MAN sectors. I noticed that for some reason on the MAN sector they didn't serve food, whereas on the Belfast sector they served breakfast for the morning runs, while at other times they served snacks only.

Not quite sure why there's a difference in service, but on one of the Belfast runs I heard the Captain refer to the flight as a "Shuttle" service which is relatively old, so maybe there's that.

BA used to serve hot English breakfast on domestic flights between London and Scotland and Northern Ireland leaving before 9:30am. They also served snack and drink for flights leaving the rest of the day before they decided to convert to LCC for all European and UK flights. Flying BA these days isn't anything special compared with Ryanair and Easyjet since they have done away with free meal and beverage onboard, seat selection and checked luggage. They are still one of the most expensive airlines to fly domestically in the UK between Scotland and London. I would just get on to other LCC if the fare difference is too significant.
