Thai frets about reputational damage from grounded 787s

Recommended Posts

Thai Airways International is concerned about the reputational damage caused by persistent engine issues with its Boeing 787-8 fleet.

Four of the carrier’s eight 787-8s are ground awaiting spare parts for their Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, says Krittaphon Chantalitanon, vice-president of alliances and commercial strategy at Thai.

“We have to do a lot of schedule changing,” he says. “There have been some delays and we will extend the phasing out period of certain types of aircraft, namely the 747-400 and possibly earlier versions of the 777, the -200s and non-ER -300s.”

BA is impacted by the same problem too.

British Airways extended leased Air Belgium A340-300 operation on London Heathrow – Abu Dhabi route. The leased A340 will continue to serve this route for British Airways until 31OCT18, LHR departure, replacing Boeing 787 aircraft.

So does BI.

Had to lease a Hi-Fly 343 for its MEL services.

Actually BI uses HiFly A343 because their 787 went to Shanghai for crew rest fitting for BWN-LHR non stop flight. BI has so far escaped recent RR-related grounding.

LATAM uses two ex-SQ B772ER.

Air New Zealand uses two Ex-SQ B772ER with additional B77W from BR.

But the crew rest fitting was delayed due to the engine issue. For a while, 2 788s sat on the ground in BWN, one in the hanger with one engine and the other outside engineless.

Oh I didn't know about this. Thank you for correction.

They have a shiny new fleet of 320neos and a fifth 788.

There was always some slack in the system even when BI only had 4 788s, which was why u see the 788 being deployed to KUL, SIN, HKG and MNL albeit on non consistent basis. And now there is the sub aircraft from HiFly too.

sorry for being asking before research. there is still 3 dreamliner flying around, while DLB and DLD (iirc) grounded.

because as from previous comments, i got the wrong image of an aircraft in shanghai for installing the crew rest bunk, and another 2 was grounded in BWN due to engine issues. so if so, do they have enough time to ready the aircraft for the BWN-LHR flight? or, some of their fleet already install with it?

The 2 grounded with engine issues were a while back ago.

I've not seen the chartered a343 landing and taking off above my house since they started the direct flights. I'm assuming installation of crew rest bunk are now complete.

The Hi Fly 343 is still operating the MEL services.

The engine issues with the 788 certainly has caused a delay in the crew bunk installation. I think -DLC left for PVG a few days/ a week or so ago, and -DLA has not flown in a while.

And due to the changes in schedules following the new Northern Winter timetable, the same aircraft from MEL can no longer operate the next service to MEL. So, at times BI have to sub the service with the A320 NEOs.

And that too whilst still operating the military charters from SIN to ROK vv using 788 (non-stop) or 320s (via DRW).
