Singapore Airlines to launch Singapore-Canberra-Wellington flights

Recommended Posts

Singapore Airlines will begin direct flights between Canberra and Singapore from September 20, with an initial schedule of four flights per week on a Boeing 777.
The 'Capital Express' route will also include a Canberra-Wellington leg in the first direct service linking the Australian and New Zealand capital cities.
The first leg of flight SQ292 will depart Wellington at 8.15pm on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, to arrive into Canberra at 10.05pm. After a brief refuelling stop, SQ292 will be wheels-up again at 11.30pm for a 5.50am arrival into Singapore the following day.
The SQ291 return journey will leave Singapore at 11pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, to reach Canberra at 8.35am the next day, continuing to Wellington for a 3.05pm arrival.
The Boeing 777-200 will carry 38 business class passengers in ‘angled flat’ seats while up to 228 passengers will settle for economy.

Whoa. I know the runway is long enough at Canberra to land a 777, but Wellington! Wellington had been receiving QF 747SP in the 1980s though...

Thing I am not sure about is whether Canberra and Wellington will have the pax. capacity though, other than the politicians between the capitals of both countries.

There'd definitely be a load restriction on fuel if not the 777 would've overran wellington on take off hahaha. Hence why there is the Canberra stop.

I believe WLG runway has taken the headwinds into account for the required take-off length. IIRC, there was one occasion where a Virgin flight with full load (a B737 i think it was) has to delay its take-off due to no headwinds at WLG around its STD time.

So what's next for SQ ? Perhaps SIN-HBA-ZQN ? :D

Anyway congratulations to SQ and wish them do well on this route.

One of the few new destinations that SQ has launched over the past decades. SQ has always been prudent in launching new destination, am sure they have done the math to calculate the profit and risk. And the folks at Canberra are now more than happy they finally have their first international route!

Canberra has always been the underdog in Oz market.....but I was surprised SQ actually launched the route to be honest!

We are surprised too. Not least to say the selection of the B772 ahead of the A333. Alas, hope to fly these sectors soon after the September commencement. Crew rotations will be interesting to say the least.. Predicting Augmented crewing with night stops in WLG, iso CBR.

5:10 aircraft layover in WLG..

SQ291 (-T-T-SS) SIN-CBR 2300/0835+1

SQ291 (M-W-F-S) CBR-WLG 0950/1505

SQ292 (M-W-F-S) WLG-CBR 2015/2205

SQ292 (M-W-F-S) CBR-SIN 2330/0550+1

Good for you! :)

Now you will have two new destinations to fly and to explore....I read somewhere they chose B772ER as it has more premium seats compared to A333.

More important, the outbound from Singapore European departures start from 2330, so ample connection time. the flight also covers connections to north Asia and India in the 2330 - 0230 bank.
Inbound to Singapore will connect from London and Frankfurt, and just about every other point in Asia.
SQ has a winner with this new route.

The flight lands at SIN before sunrise. I doubt many people would want to have an 18+ hour connection if they had a choice.

Morning connections would be much more logical, though not all all European/North Asian destinations have daytime departures.

Yeah, runway extension however has been challenged by New Zealand pilots due to the nature of rotor turbulence over the bay just before the runway threshold.. If that becomes the landing zone, risk to airplanes may be percieved to increase... Additionally the runway extension doesn't incorporate sufficient RESA in the design.. Big contention over that issue

This will strengthen WLG's case to extend their runway. The plan is to add 350m to the south into Lyall Bay by reclamation.

http://www.connectwellington.co.nz

Not really reclamation, in the report, I can see they want to use the piles supported method as seen at the end section of the new runway in Tokyo Haneda, this is so the waves and water course are not severely disrupted. Anyone who has been or lived in Wellington will know how rough the weather and see it down that southern coast in Wellington.

Singapore Airlines records low passenger numbers on Canberra flights

Singapore Airlines struggled to fill its planes in the first week it flew between Canberra and Wellington in New Zealand, data has revealed.
The International Airline Activity report by the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development showed, on average, each of the six flights from Wellington to Canberra in September held just 94 passengers.
The Boeing 777 has 266 seats, meaning there was an average passenger load factor of just 35 per cent.

Pretty sure SQ are being (financially?) incentivized by the Government or Airport to start this route, especially at this early stage. After a year or two, that's when SQ should decide whether it has gained traction or not.

Personally I have a feeling that it will be too difficult to make this route work but of course hope I'm wrong.

EDIT: Even with this already very, very low load factor, QR recently announced they are entering the route too.

EDIT2:

Singapore Airlines has its flights from Canberra to Wellington subsidised by Wellington City Council’s Destination Wellington Fund to the tune of $NZ9 ($8.50) a passenger across its 10-year deal to fly the route.

Canberra Airport also committed to making a significant investment to sign Singapore Airlines, promising a package worth $32 million that includes $24m going towards the construction of a new business lounge and $7m for marketing across the next 10 years.

Such enticement packages have not been offered to other airlines.

I just think the 77E is too large of a bird to serve this route. The 788 is prolly more suitable for this route which SQ does not have any! Perhaps it may come to a point that SQ might use Scoot 788 to fly this route, much to the displeasure of politicians from both countries.

SIA to tweak Canberra, Wellington services

Singapore Airlines (SIA) will adjust its four-times-weekly Singapore-Canberra-Wellington service in favour of using Sydney and Melbourne as stopover points.
The carrier states it will begin a daily Singapore-Sydney-Canberra service on 1 May, with Boeing 777-300ERs. A four-times weekly Singapore-Melbourne-Wellington service will then begin on 3 May, where it will use 777-200ERs.

Am glad they didn't cancel the route altogether!
