Putrajaya Approved RM1.6 Billion to Build Kulim International Airport

As if the current Sultan Abdul Halim airport is at overcapacity already...

Kulim is also closer to Penang and if you're living in Seberang Perai, it is a hassle to cross the bridge to go to the airport.

If Kulim gets airport, Penang wants two more

If Kulim gets an international airport airlines, especially cargo carriers may use it as a relief airport to PEN. The Kedah government can use it to entice investors to shift to the state instead.

Penang will definitely be affected.

If he's serious about it, then the smart thing to do would be to develop under-utilised Alor Setar airport. It doesn't suffer from the constraints at Bayan Lepas and is well-connected enough by highways.

So this is nothing more than him trying to get the occasional quick political publicity, whatever the reason may be.

And to side track a bit, Bayan Lepas Airport and Subang Airport are very good reminders of poor planning and foresight with regards to Malaysia's major airports.

The proposed airport can increase the peninsula's northern region more economically competitive relative to other parts of this country or even the wider region - if the justification really grounded on facts and figures.

But then, the 2nd Penang bridge is already opened to traffic. It is closer to PEN which has direct overwater connection to rather sparsely developed area in and around Batu Kawan.

I think investment should be towards a more efficient land based transportation system instead of building more and more airports.

Yes, agree that land transport is more important - they had talked about the Bangkok to Singapore high speed railway but nothing much has been done. Hopefully they will look at the KL - Singapore high speed rail link as the beginning and build other high speed rail links to all major towns and cities in the Peninsula and Sabah and Sarawak.

China realised the importance of high speed railways and look at what they have done to date. Really a boost to their economy.

In terms of transport, what Penang Island really need now is an LRT/MRT around the island including to the airport.

What Kedah really need is good/higher quality feeder roads/highways and maybe commuter trains to connect Kulim, Sungai Petani and some new industrial and residential township in southern Kedah to Penang International Airport

Talked about airport upgrading, KBR also needs an airport upgrades as well. Last time when TF planned to make KBR as hub for AK, MAHB only want to provide them a cabin ( construction cabin) to be AK's office (based on gossip from AK friend). That's why KBR was cancel to become AK hub in east cost.

Maybe they should consider building private airports - just like what they have in JHB. Should try to create more competition for MAHB.

But i guess, all the nearby land in kbr is belong to MAHB and i don't think that they will give permission to build a new terminal just to compete with them. Haha. Malaysian typical politician. Haha.

But then, how many projects or rather how many percentage of projects in Malaysia are well-planned and well executed?

Szb was planned and built in the 1960's. The original master plan and land reserve include parallel runways and have no issue to handle 60m ppa. Given its location is nearer to city center, is more users friendly.

Really, that was the original plan? Very foresighted planning, but then...

Having densely populated residential areas nearby would potentially attract nighttime curfews ala SYD, LHR, NRT etc - which ultimately hamper the airport's growth.

Do I want an airport that's less than an hour away from the city? Definitely - but not at the expense of redeye flights that have convenient arrival times at the destination. There's an SQ flight from LAX/NRT that arrives at 3am - the only way out of the airport is by taxi, with a midnight surcharge.

Well that was a plan with good intentions but the execution was flawed as the land earmarked for the airport was sold to non-aviation developers and converted to other use.

The same was planned for KLIA and now, we are also seeing signs of land misuse (e.g. the Mitsui Mall, and other things like theme parks planned). So will we see the fiasco at SZB repeating itself in Sepang?

Airports near city centres are not compulsory as long as there are good and fast connections via public transport. Nowadays, I consciously avoid taking flights that arrive at red eye hours.

Residential development near SZB was possible only after the airport reserve was re-gazetted in late 1980's.

I think you need to read deeper into the issue why Penang cannot build LRT/ monorail especially around the heritage areas.

The city centre is lined up with a lot of old colonial houses and buildings which attract the tourists and non local Penangites.. This is one of the many reasons why Penang was awarded the UNESCO Heritage Site by UN. No major development/redevelopment shall take place within these areas, unless Penang wants to lose its hard-earned UNESCO Heritage Site status. To work around this, they may go underground subway.

Alternatively, establish a hub for people to get to fringe village from a central hub in the city using bus. Some have suggested trams like those in Melbourne and Bergen, Norway. Trams would be lovely as it will bring back to the good old days where they were in used once upon a time. However, allocating space for the already-narrow road would be a headache though. Others proposed a monorail/subway with trams. The previous will cater for the mass while trams maybe more for tourist.

Anyhow too much sidetrack.....let's go back to main topic.
