Boeing the Front-Runner for $13.8 Billion Singapore Air Order: Sources

Recommended Posts

Boeing Co. is the front-runner as Singapore Airlines Ltd. closes in on an order for at least 35 wide-body aircraft amid a battle with Chinese and Middle Eastern carriers, people familiar with the matter said.

Singapore is considering buying 20 of Boeing’s long-range 777-9 jets, which are set to debut at decade’s end, after studying a rival bid for Airbus Group SE’s A350 aircraft, one of the people said. The carrier also is poised to take at least 19 of the Boeing 787-10, the longest Dreamliner model, the person said.

Those aircraft would be valued at $13.8 billion based on list prices, before the discounts that are customary in the industry. The order could be unveiled this week, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.

The aircraft to be purchased would replace aging Boeing models such as the 777-300ER, while giving Singapore Air or its low-cost subsidiaries rights to Boeing aircraft not yet on the market. Representatives of Singapore Air and Boeing declined to comment.

Given Singapore Airlines has 67 A350 on order (some already delivered), it is matter of time they place an order for B777X. 20 B777X is a conservative number, I can see a top up order in mear future, like what they did with B77W.

Btw, the word "ageing" and B77W makes me feel old....

Malaysia Airlines has never had systematic fleet planning and it is MAB that has broken the trend somewhat when it ordered new B737Max to replace its relatively new B737NGs.

SQ Group, on the other hand, has a consistent fleet replacement policy to ensure that it has relatively new (and less expensive to maintain) aircraft in its fleet. If this LOI is firmed up, it will operate Boeing's whole range of latest generation aircraft - B737Max, B787 family and B779.

:clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: Hurrah! Another milestone for Boeing! SIA have always been a fan of Boeing.

I think it's to add up to the current fleet of B738NG. Probably they will send back some of the leased B738 that comes without IFE and BSI. The 737MAX range is better than the B738NG.

SQ is no fanboy - they play hard economics. But they are also savvy enough to know that it is better to have both Airbus and Boeing in their fleet so that they can diversify financial, technical and business risks. It is not easy to run a profitable airline.

As for MH, Peter Bellew has already said they have more B737s than they need and are short of A330s. So the B737NG will most likely to be quickly retired once the Max start arriving.

Boeing Rolls Out Singapore Airlines' First 787-10 Dreamliner

Singapore_787-10-004+SMALL.jpg

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C., Oct. 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] has rolled out the first 787-10 Dreamliner built for Singapore Airlines at its Final Assembly facility in North Charleston, South Carolina.

The airplane will now undergo the painting of the airline's livery and begin its system checks, fueling, and engine runs. Singapore Airlines is due to take delivery of its first 787-10 in the first half of 2018 and will be operated on the airline's medium-haul routes.
Singapore Airlines is the launch customer of the 787-10 and currently has 30 airplanes on firm order. The airline also signed a letter of intent in February to purchase 19 additional 787-10s.
"Boeing is excited to have finished final assembly of the first 787-10 Dreamliner for Singapore Airlines," said Dinesh Keskar, senior vice president, Asia Pacific & India Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "With its unprecedented efficiency, greater capacity and the Dreamliner's known preferred passenger experience, the 787-10 will be an important part of the airline's future fleet."
As an 18-foot (5.5-m) stretch of the 787-9, the 787-10 will deliver the 787 family's preferred passenger experience and long range with 25 percent better fuel per seat and emissions than the airplanes it will replace.
The 787 Dreamliner family offers a modern, optimized and efficient airplane family in every market segment. Since entering service in 2011, the 787 family has flown more than 190 million people on more than 560 unique routes around the world, saving an estimated 18 billion pounds of fuel.
