Allegations arise of MAS waiving RM17,000 excess baggage fees for Najib

Recommended Posts

PETALING JAYA: Allegations have arisen that Malaysia Airlines (MAS) had waived excess baggage charges of about RM17,000 when former prime minister Datuk Seti Najib Tun Razak and his family flew to Pulau Langkawi for a holiday recently.

Screenshots which are now going viral – said to be of the airline's ticketing system – show that the charges of RM17,071.85 were waived for the "head of pool" with the name "MOHDNAJIB Hjabrazak Dato" for flight MH1450 on June 16.

MAS will be issuing a statement on the matter soon.

More to come

There are 24 people in that travel party. The excess baggage weight is around 535 kg. Are you telling me that each passenger has 24.3 kg of excess baggage which is carried TO Langkawi?

That doesn't make a whit of sense.

I honestly don't see anything wrong to have some courtesy for a former Malaysian PM.

That's just a big no. MH still have to pay fuel and wages.

If this is true carrying that much excess weight looks crazy or maybe its logistics? lol. The flight itself might've loss a potential income of 17k and has to fly heavier. Yet many common passengers have to pay excess baggage just for a few blocks of extra Kgs? I think any Minister or former Minister has to pay excess regardless of affiliating with any political group or NGO. Even Enrich Platinum cant cover that excess amount.

What on earth do you think they shipped over to for the few days they were there ?!

Surely they could have sourced for kangkung locally in Langkawi ? :D

One can argue the same for frequent fliers who get extra baggage allowance on the account of their status, no?

EDIT: MAS has issued a statement

MAS has since denied that any waiver was given for the entourage and said that their total check-in baggage was well within the allowable limit.

It clarified that when passengers check-in as a group, all baggage may be combined and tagged under one name, which would appear on the system as excess baggage.

It was reported that Najib and his family, including his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, had a brief holiday in Pulau Langkawi from June 16-20

Kedah police chief Commissioner Datuk Zainal Abidin Kasim on Monday (June 18) said Najib arrived in Langkawi on June 16 and spent his time playing golf on the island.

He also asked the public to stop speculation that Najib was attempting to leave the country via a northern route. Both Najib and Rosmah have been barred from leaving the country pending investigations into 1MDB.

Also, both Najib & Rosmah are Enrich Platinum members apparently - which means they get 100% extra baggage allowance on top of the 40kg they're allowed as J pax.

Cant say Im following your logic here. A frequent flier who earns his or her status by spending good money on tickets is quite different from a former PM who travelled everywhere on a private jet and is somehow a Platinum member.

But if only MO1 and the missus are Plats, that is nowhere near enough to cover over 500kg of excess baggage. Do you if any of the other 22 have Enrich/OW status?

Oh just let them be - who amongst us here have not ever exceeded their baggage allowance ?

And been so grateful when the check-in agent decided to turn a blind eye on issue instead :)

Instead, I say we should look into manner in which such 'intimate' details related to a travelling civilian could have made it unto social media. I would venture to opine that some privacy policy rule had been breached along the way - will anyone be held accountable ?

Moot point since MAS already has clarified that there were no excess baggage issues in the first place. Their entourage checked-in together and so the entire baggage allowance was lumped under one person.

I doubt it. Pretty sure someone higher up the chain of command wanted that info to leak.

Senior government officials and their spouses are accorded Enrich Platinum status. If memory serves me correctly their cards have the coat-of-arms printed to distinguish them from the "regular" Plats.
