A350 focus: Qatar is the largest operator and Hong Kong has the most departing seats; sectors vary from intra-regional to ultra-long range

Recommended Posts

More than 20 million seats will be flown on A350s during the course of 2017. The A350-1000, which is the largest variant of the A350 family, was granted type certification by European and US airworthiness authorities on 21 November, clearing it to enter airline service. The manufacturer hopes to deliver the first example to launch customer Qatar Airways before the end of the year. The Doha-based carrier was also the launch customer for the A350-900, the only variant from the family to enter service so far.

A350 operators nearly double in 2017
The first A350-900 was delivered to Qatar Airways in December 2014. According to Airbus, 122 A350-900s had been delivered up to 31 October 2017, while a further 559 remain on order, along with 169 A350-1000s. The Airbus delivery report shows that the largest A350 operators at the end of October were Cathay Pacific Airways with 19 aircraft, and Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines with 18 each. Unsurprisingly, these carriers are the top three A350 operators based on published capacity for the type in 2017. The pace of deliveries is increasing with the number of airlines operating A350s increasing from 10 in 2016, to 18 in 2017 (or 19 if LATAM Airlines and LATAM Airlines Brazil are classified as separate carriers).

They should have made it clearer. Sounds like it's "Qatar is the largest operator of the A350 by seats"

Yes, a bit sloppy with the wording. They should just have said the "operators with the largest fleet of A350s..."

CX's A350-1000 will be used for their new HKG-IAD (Washington Dulles) direct route from October 2018 onwards. Before that, it will be used for HKG-BKK-SIN route as CX717 and SIN-HKG as CX716.

SIA would be the largest operator of the A350s in Asia with its total order of 67 A350s. Could even be the largest single airline order for the A350s.

Do they (SQ) have any orders for the A350-1000?

No, because they ordered the B777-9.

I think that we will begin to see a very boring period for wide bodied aircraft from now on. This is because the A350 and B787 will dominate that segment, just like the A320 and B737 did for the narrow bodies. From now on, don't expect to see more all new wide bodies being introduced. We may get Neo models appearing in about 10 years or so but all new wide bodies will be rare!

Yeah totally agreed.

My upcoming trip is a testament to the boredom that we will see in the future: 787-10, A350-900 and A350-1000..............

Really look forward to the 777-8/9 and upcoming planned 797
