Thanks for hajj ops heads-up, Nik, and all the best to those 'Guests of Allah'. In 2003, I went for hajj on an old Saudia 742. It was all economy with 444 ppl, a number nobody could easily forget. :D

Fantastic.

God Bless the pilgrims.

Btw Captain...could i ask a few questions?

1) As is the rule for ops into MED, all crew will have to be Muslims right?

2) How about into JED? As i understand..commercial flights have no restrictions on the religion of their crew...however are there special rules for Hajj flights? Or perhaps an MASCharter rule?

Thanks in advance.

1) No. Non Muslim crew are also allowed to operate into and out of Madinah. However, the movements of Non Muslim crew in Madinah city is restricted as they are allowed to be only in a specific area. As a result, only one 5 star hotel is available for lodging.

As such, MASCharters as a cost saving measure is only using Muslim crew as the five star hotel if at all available is extremely costly.

2) Hajj Flights are subjected to intense negotiations when securing slots, and are only allowed to dock into the Hajj Terminal at JED, the busiest terminal in the world during Hajj period. Schedules must be followed strictly as any deviation from the planned will be costly, ie SR18,,000 if early or late by more than 20 mins. Bnk Guaranteees must be deposited and a/c maint and other regulatory papers must be submitted. A 'responsible' officer must be nominated by each operating airline to be 'hanged' (guess who??) and any delegation of responsibility must be clearly advised. There are many more restrictions and rules, and all these conditions make operating into other stations and normal airline operations a walk in the park

In other words.....Don't Play Play....

As for the crew, MASCharter requires the Hajj Cabin Crew to go through a one full day Hajj Ops training to remind them of the special needs of the Pilgrims, menu and service planning, special announcements, understanding the concept of the Hajj etc etc, following a syllabus drawn up by Charters.

OK, I'm off to the Kelana Jaya Hajj Complex, then to KLIA.

May post some pix later.

Doors for MH8000, the first Hajj flight were ready to be closed by 1000 but was closed on time to adhere to the arrival schedule in Madinah. 380 pilgrims were on board the aircraft, scheduled to arrive Madinah 1425 local time there.

Check-in started at KJ Haj Complex at 0600 and after security and baggage loading completed, 11 buses, one ambulance and three outriders left for KLIA at 0850. The buses went straight to the airsideand pax disembarked at Bay B2, as pre arranged by MASCharters.

Thanks for pics, yes, yes, nostalgia time for me. My departure was early morning in Jan '03, so we had to be at Kelana Jaya around 11pm. But the Tabung Haji ppl were very efficient and I felt like a box in an assembly line, being pushed from one spot to another in a methodic way. No wonder they were precise about the timings, thanks to the strict arrival slot at JED/MED.

Dear Maarof, all the best to you and missus, on this extremely meaningful journey. It'll surely change you, for the betterment I hope. I know ppl who went for hajj and returned otherwise, but that's another story :). To me, it was a journey in search of the meaning of life ... and 5 yrs later, I think I'm beginning to see some sort of closure to it.

When we did ours in Jan/Feb 2003, we decided not to document it, mainly because of its sacredness, of it being something very personal between us and God, and of it being above anything else. But hey, that's us. In any case the authorities there are very sticky about photography, so pls be discreet. So again, all the best.

First Group Of Malaysian Haj Leaves For Holy Land

SEPANG, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- The first group of 380 potential Haj pilgrims from Malaysia left for Medina on a Malaysia Airlines (MAS) special chartered flight which took off from the KL International Airport at 10am today.

MAS General Manager (Haj & Charter) Captain Nik Huzlan Nik Hussain said the direct flight was scheduled to arrive in Medina at 2.25pm local time (7pm Malaysian time).

He said for this current Haj season, MAS was bringing 17,000 haj pilgrims from Malaysia for the pilgrimage.

Apart from KLIA, MAS is also handling 37 direct flights to Jeddah and 17 direct flights to Medina from Penang, Johor Baharu, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

He said the return flights for the haj pilgrims were scheduled from December 27, 2007 until January 25 next year, involving 54 flights.

Nik Huzlan said this year, Tabung Haji received RM80,000 from individuals and the corporate sector to provide the necessary needs, like mineral water, mats and food for the pilgrims.

One of the Haj pilgrims, Bidah Dollah, 70, from Jertih, Terengganu said she was grateful to be given the opportunity to perform the pilgrimage, which would be her first.

"Before I couldn't afford," she said, adding that she was accompanied by her husband.

One of the youngest pilgrims, Helwa Nabilah Mohd Shukor,11, who is in Standard Five at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tehal, Jasin, Melaka, said she was happy to be able to accompany her parents for the pilgrimage.

Another student, Amirul Shafiq Rodin, who is in Form Three at Sekolah Menengah Unwanus Saadah, Banting, Selangor, said he was happy to be able to finally accompany his mother on the pilgrimage.

"I had wanted to follow her when I was six years old but I was too young then," he added.
