Guys,

Thought of starting a dedicated 787 thread here, regarding news and other developments of this great new aircraft ;)

Here's some of today's news:

El Al Cancels Boeing 787 Options

November 14, 2006

El Al Israel Airlines said on Tuesday it had cancelled its option to buy 10 Boeing 787 jets.

In a statement to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange the Israeli carrier explained that it had not come to an agreement with the manufacturer within the timeframe Boeing had set.

El Al said that Boeing had agreed to return the carrier's USD$1.5 million deposit for the jets that would have been delivered between 2012 and 2013.

The carrier said it was considering other options for jets, including both Boeing and Airbus aircraft.

The Israeli airline has so far only bought Boeing aircraft.

Boeing's spokesman in Tel Aviv said Boeing still intends to work with El Al, but that the Israeli carrier had decided to take additional time to conduct further fleet evaluation.

"Boeing will continue to communicate with El Al concerning its interest in the 787 and how the Boeing 787 can meet El Al's future requirements," the spokesman said.

In July, El Al warned that it expects to make a loss in 2006 due to high fuel costs, stiff competition from foreign carriers, and fighting between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas, which greatly cut tourism during Israel's peak summer tourist period.

In October the carrier said it was in discussions with its union to reach an agreement on layoffs of as many as 900 workers to help its bottom line.

Missed 787 Deal Could Be Costly For Aeroflot

November 14, 2006

Russian flagship carrier Aeroflot will run into huge losses after missing a deadline in an interim agreement with Boeing on delivery of 22 long-haul jets, a major Aeroflot shareholder warned on Tuesday.

Aeroflot needs modern, more cost-effective planes to upgrade its ageing fleet of mostly Russian-made aircraft and maintain its big network of long-range flights.

Russia's National Reserve Corporation (NRC), which is Aeroflot's largest private investor with a 30 percent stake, had agreed with Boeing it would get a discount of USD$10 million to USD$15 million for each of its 22 B-787 "Dreamliner" jets.

"The state has practically left the national airline with no modern long-haul planes," NRC head Alexander Lebedev told a conference. "There is no replacement for them. Losses from that decision will run into hundreds of millions of dollars."

If the state, holding 51 percent in Aeroflot, had issued a directive by November 1 to go ahead with the deal to buy the planes -- estimated at up to USD$3 billion -- Aeroflot would have received the first of the 22 jets in 2010.

Now senior Aeroflot officials say that the delivery of new Boeing planes should not be expected before 2014.

NRC had stepped in to buy 22 long-range Boeings on behalf of Aeroflot to avert the collapse of the USD$3 billion deal.

Aeroflot's board, lacking political backing, had repeatedly failed to decide between Boeing's pitch for its Dreamliner and a rival offer from European plane maker Airbus for its A350 XWB.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aeromexico yesterday announced firm orders for two 787-8s and 10 737-700s, orders that previously were listed by Boeing as unidentified. The combined value of the 12 aircraft is more than $830 million. The 787s, to be delivered in 2011, are in addition to three the carrier plans to lease from ILFC. The 737-700s, scheduled for delivery starting in early 2010, are in addition to six 737NGs it ordered last winter.

AM said the 787s and two recently leased 777-200ERs will be used on routes to Europe, South America and Asia, replacing 767s coming off leases. "The speed and flightdeck commonality of the 787 and the 777 will allow Aeromexico to adjust its long-distance routes, such as between Mexico and Japan, according to capacity demands," CEO Andres Conesa said.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner Rolls Out of Factory - Virtually

EVERETT, Wash., Dec. 06, 2006 -- Boeing 787 Dreamliner employees, along with customers and partners from around the globe, gathered for an event to celebrate 2006 accomplishments, which included a virtual rollout of the super-efficient airplane.

This virtual rollout event was the culmination of many months of effort by thousands of team members at Boeing and partner sites around the world. Through the use of the 787 program's new digital toolset (provided by Dassault Systemes), the team has proven the manufacturability of the 787 designs. The multimedia event featured engineering-based simulations, video of production startup and the unveiling of the 787 final assembly production flow.

Since the 787 launch in April 2004, 37 customers have logged 458 orders and commitments, of which 435 are firm orders valued at $68 billion at current list prices, making the Dreamliner the most successful commercial airplane launch in history.

hehehe that would have been quite cool to witness a "virtual" rollout. So looks like this is the final design then! Check your models are consistent! :D

Boeing, First Choice Airways Sign Order for Two Additional Boeing 787s

SEATTLE, Dec. 06, 2006 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] today confirmed that UK-based carrier and integrated-tour operator First Choice Airways has ordered an additional two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners with deliveries beginning in 2011. This order previously was listed on Boeing's Orders and Deliveries webpage attributed to an unidentified customer.

First Choice, the European launch customer for the 787, placed its first order for six 787s in July 2004. With today's announcement, First Choice now has eight 787s on order. Boeing will deliver First Choice's first 787 in the first quarter of 2009.

"The additional 787s are integral to providing our customers the most comfortable air-travel experience possible in an environmentally responsible way," said Chris Browne, Managing Director, First Choice Airways. "Thanks to its unique cabin environment featuring a more spacious interior, bigger windows and higher humidity, we firmly believe passengers will prefer the First Choice 787 product. From a business perspective, the 20-percent improvement in fuel efficiency will benefit our bottom line and facilitate our growth into new markets."

First Choice's 787s will be powered by all-new GEnx engines developed by General Electric.

"This follow-on order from our European launch customer First Choice speaks volumes about their belief in the exceptional benefits the 787 will bring to their passengers," said Marlin Dailey, vice president of Sales for Europe, Russia and Central Asia, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We are delighted they are furthering their commitment to this innovative airplane which incorporates the most advanced materials and technologies available today to airlines around the world."

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, when it enters service in 2008, will provide passengers with a better flying experience. Inside the airplane, passengers will find bigger windows and more stowage space, and experience cleaner air and a higher humidity. The improvements in cabin altitude combined with higher humidity and cleaner air create an overall improvement in passenger comfort.

Using 20 percent less fuel per passenger than similarly sized airplanes, the 787 is designed for the environment with 20 percent lower emissions and quieter takeoffs and landings.

As of Dec. 5, Boeing has received 458 orders and commitments for the 787 Dreamliner.

Air NZ Orders Four More Boeing 787s

December 19, 2006

National carrier Air New Zealand said on Tuesday it would buy a further four Boeing 787s to meet expected growth over the next decade.

The order brought the company's purchase to eight 787s with options on a further eight production slots, General Manager Strategic Development Nathan Agnew.

"These new aircraft will provide Air New Zealand with a solid platform to realise its growth ambitions over the next decade," he said in a statement.

Air New Zealand expected to introduce the first plane in 2011 and the last of the eight in 2013.

The four additional Boeing 787s have a list price of around NZD$1 billion (USD$690 million) but the airline had achieved a significant discount when it was one of the first airlines in the world to commit to the 787.

Air New Zealand is around 80 percent owned by the New Zealand government.

Doesn't this news fall under your other thread re: Boeing's News?????

Mod, in light of recent ermerging corporate culture in the aviation industry, perhaps some consolidation or a merger is needed w.r.t. some of Andrew's posts about for e.g. ANZ - 787 and SIA-600th 777 into his other thread: Boeing News.

Andrew, put everything in one place. It's easier to find and people will still read it, k ;)

This is a topic specifically for the 787...

Here's some more 787 news:

Jet Airways Orders 10 Boeing 787s

January 2, 2007

India's biggest domestic airline, Jet Airways, said on Tuesday it had purchased 10 Boeing 787-8 aircraft to support its international operations.

The wide-bodied 787s are scheduled for delivery between July 2011 and December 2012, Jet said.

Jet had executed the order for the aircraft "in late 2006," a senior company official said, in a deal valued at between USD$1.48 billion - USD$1.58 billion at current list price.

Jet flies to destinations in south and southeast Asia and Britain, and expects to fly to New York from August. It is also looking to add destinations in China, Europe and the Middle East.

It expects half its total revenue to come from international operations by March 2009.

Boeing has said it expects India would need 856 new jet aircraft worth more than USD$72 billion over the next 20 years because of a booming economy and greater travel.

hehe good point Pieter.

Well Jet is thinking ahead with it's move and finger's crossed that the present capacity crisis will not be repeated in the future on international sectors as it does now within the domestic market in India.

Otherwise, I am sure that these aircraft wouldn'[t be too hard to lease out?

Here is a news release from Boeing:

SEATTLE, Jan. 02, 2007 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and Mumbai-based Jet Airways today announced an order for 10 787-8 Dreamliners. The order, placed in December 2006, is valued at more than $1.5 billion at list prices and deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2011.

"This order reflects our desire to be the leader in offering the highest quality of service that is reliable, comfortable and efficient for our customers with the most modern aircraft," said Naresh Goyal, chairman of Jet Airways. "These 787 Dreamliners, which will be used in conjunction with our 777s ordered in September 2005, will bring a new level of world-class service as we expand our international operations with routes to Europe, Asia and the U.S."

Jet Airways currently operates a fleet of 46 Classic and Next-Generation Boeing 737-400/-700/-800/-900 airplanes. The airline will take delivery of its first of 10 777-300ERs in April.

"The 787 Dreamliner will enhance Jet Airways' fleet with both its unmatched fuel efficiency and its flexibility for both regional and long-haul operations," said Dinesh Keskar, Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice president of Sales. "Passengers will enjoy the many benefits of the 787, from an interior environment with higher humidity to increased comfort and convenience."

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, scheduled for delivery beginning in 2008, provides passengers with a better flying experience and operators with a more efficient commercial jetliner. Thirty-eight airlines have logged 471 orders and commitments worth more than $70 billion at current list prices since the 787 launch in April 2004, making the Dreamliner the most successful commercial airplane launch in history.

Jet Airways, with an average fleet age of 5.3 years, has one of the youngest aircraft fleets in the world. The airline operates more than 330 daily flights to 49 destinations that span the length and breadth of India and beyond including London, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Colombo and Kathmandu. The airline plans to extend its international operations to North America, Europe, Africa, China and Asia in the coming years with the introduction of twin-aisle aircraft into its fleet in 2007.

Any idea when MAS (MH) will announce their new fleet replenishment?? Like 773s or 787s or 747-8Is?

I am guessing some 777-300ERs for long hauls/international and 737-800s for short hauls/domestic? What about 787s or even 747-8Is??

If you take the current age of the 747-400s operated by MH, its almost 18yrs now. I remember the first few were combis and then MH got all their pax version. So, high time they renew it with 747-8 I s? I think apart from Lufthansa, no other airline has committed on the Intercontiental version for the new 747-8, so hope after BA, JAL, CAL, MH will also committ.

What happened to the 737-800s leased from Czech? I remember in 2004/2005, MH had 3 leased from Czech?

The day we see MH replace their fleet, the day when they cancel A380 :p

As mentioned before, this is long overdue, but the planes are still in good shape~~ replace now mean no use since they spend hundreds millions refurbish the interior, this of course not apply to 734....I remember one time when MH is so close to order 60 738 ;)

Thanks Seth K,

Think MAS will cancel the A380 eventually. I call it the white flying elephant.

What happened to the order then??

I see 777-300ER ideal for MH futute strategy as well as 747-8i!

What do you think?

May be not so soon as they are still working hard to save money.

The 738 has always been a strong candidate as MAS 734 replacement.

If i'm not mistaken, MAS 744 are not really that old. Some were deliver new in 2000 or 2001.

I think apart from Lufthansa, no other airline has committed on the Intercontiental version for the new 747-8, so hope after BA, JAL, CAL, MH will also committ.

Yes. The other likely customers for the pax version 748 are CX & JL.

What happened to the 737-800s leased from Czech? I remember in 2004/2005, MH had 3 leased from Czech?

All were returned last year. The 738 MAS leased got a terrible seat pitch in both GCC & EY.
