AirAsia On Board WiFi

Recommended Posts

Since more and more airlines offering Wifi onboard, what will the future be for PTVs that has become standard in long haul international flights currently? Will PTVs along with the system and wiring be ultimately reduced in numbers to reduce overall aircraft weight? Almost anyone can afford a tablet or a work laptop.

But the ones on TZ is without Internet Connection and is purely for access to entertainment only :)

MI has similar offering as well, no PTV on their new 738 but stream to own device via WI-FI .

I have one question come across regarding this on board wifi.

Just curious about wifi connection will make hackers easier to hack the aircraft system on board?

The Wifi system, if properly implemented, should be separate from aircraft systems.

Anyone know if this system is

"1st Gen" style - i.e. like most, Onair Based satellite, or

"USA style" - Gogo / Row 44 land based or

''2nd Gen" style - like Jetblue's A321 or AA's A321 Transcon ATG-4 high bandwith one (I've tried the AA ATG-4 one and it's fast ! - can facetime shh!)

Should be satellite type as we don't have much land mass in Malaysia - Kuantan to Sepang only takes 15 mins to cross! East Malaysia has more land but less land based wireless networks. Its different in US or EU - they have plenty of networks overland.

Definitely no torrents or streaming up there :p

But otherwise should be adequate for text based communications.

The problem is that you can't have total control over the background usage of data. For instance, once you're connected to wifi, some phones may automatically back up photos and other data. Needless to say the 1mb limit will be burst in no time. Edited by Chris Tan

1MB quota only apply for the trial, no? You should be able to buy more if you need to once they roll out fully. At least that's what I think. No need to cap your ancillary income, right?

Personally when i go travelling, i disable any backup and updates.

Just to make it safe.

Yeah. People seems to forget that this is their trial period.

I am envisioning data packages for sale when it is rolled out - like how UA and AA has it on their flights.

AA's WiFi onboard, very affordable packages.

I found out that there are many airlines have already launched WiFi on board, AA, SQ, JL, LH, etc... wondering why not Malaysia based airlines. Was checking around the offers on those airlines' websites and didn't notice any quota imposed.
