Been reading it's a Qantas A380.

Says it exploded. I pray to God it wasn't a terrorist attack.

EDIT: Latest say it didn't crash, safely landed.

SYDNEY: Qantas says one of its planes will make an emergency landing Thursday after one of its engines shut down while flying over Indonesia.

Qantas spokeswoman Emma Kearns says one of four engines on the plane flying from Singapore to Sydney shut down. Kearns says the plane can safely fly on three engines, but that the pilot will land the plane in Singapore to be safe.

Kearns says there have been no reports of injuries and that the airline has not received any reports of an explosion on board.

The plane is expected to land in about 30 minutes. - AP

Misleading title - should change it, may cause possible scare/upset to those with family frequently travelling on QF on that route.

Qantas A380 Engine Issue over Indonesia

by MIYURU on NOVEMBER 4, 2010

A Qantas Airbus A380-842, registration VH-OQA, operating as QF32 from London, LHR to Sydney, SYD via Singapore, SIN had an unidentified engine issue over Indonesia and returned to Singapore for a safe landing.

Confusing reports state that the aircraft has now landed while some others state that it is still dumping fuel to land.

It was reported that some debris from the engine had fallen over Indonesia.

VH-OQA MSN014 was built in 2008 and is the first A380 delivered to Qantas. The aircraft is named Nancy Bird Walton and is powered by Trent 900 engines. Some sources state that the issue was with the engine cowling.

SINGAPORE - A troubled Qantas Airbus A380 plane landed in Singapore on Thursday with smoke coming out of its underside and was quickly surrounded by six fire engines, an AFP reporter said.

Fire engines immediately swarmed the aircraft as soon is it landed on the tarmac on Changi Airport.

"I can see smoke coming out of it," the reporter said.

The Qantas plane experienced engine trouble over Indonesia's Batam island and was circling to use up its fuel before attempting to land in Singapore.

Earlier reports said the A380 plane crashed near the Indonesian island. Witnesses reportedly heard an explosion over the island.

Debris including what appears to be a piece of the tail of a Qantas jet was found in Batam after a loud mid-air explosion, a witness said.

Pam Ann can now add a few more lines to her Qantas jokes - an A380 that suddenly exploded its engine mid air.

Thank god nothing happened. It could turn out to be the worst aircrash in modern history. Just imagine, 500 passengers and crew died in a mid air explosion incident. It'll be the first involving an A380 - what supposed to be a young, highly sophisticated and a very safe aircraft. And it's Qantas - the world's most experience airlines, which has a reputation of involving in incidents of this nature, minus any crashes.

Distressed plane lands in Singapore after debris found on island

November 4, 2010 -- Updated 0529 GMT (1329 HKT)

A Qantas plane that had one of its four engines shut down mid-flight landed safely in Singapore on Thursday morning, the airline said.

The airline, in a statement, did not say whether debris that fell on the western Indonesian island of Batam was from the plane.

Local television stations showed small amount of debris with red-white markings. Pictures of the Airbus 380 after it landed showed the cowling -- or the covering of the engine -- torn off in the back half.

Earlier, Tatang Kurnia, the head of the country's Transport Safety Board, told Metro TV that debris fell of a plane headed to Singapore.

But Qantas, Australia's national airline, would only confirm that a plane with 433 passengers and 26 crew members on board developed engine trouble in one of its four engines soon after takeoff.

Flight QF32, en route to Sydney from Singapore, turned back and landed safely in Singapore's Changi Airport, the airline said.

"Some media reports suggested the aircraft had crashed. These reports are incorrect. No Qantas aircraft has crashed," the airline said.

Trifuadi, a security officer at an engineering firm in Batam, said he heard a loud explosion and saw smoke coming out of the engine of a plane flying overhead.

Shortly afterward, debris fell from the plane to the ground, said Trifuadi, who like many Indonesians go by one name.

Ulf Waschbusch, who was on his way to Australia for the first time, said the crew kept passengers apprised of what was happening.

"We all stayed pretty calm," he told CNN. "It was an almost eerie calm."

In August, a Qantas flight bound for Sydney from San Francisco, California, was forced to return to San Francisco after one of its engines developed mechanical problems, the airline said at the time. The flight landed safely.

Does this mean all A380 will be grounded?-or at least all Qantas' A380

And another delivery delays for A380? Oh GOD.

Looks more like an isolated incident, but surely with the grounding of this A380, Qantas is now facing a huge operational headache with aircraft rotation.

Pictures on BBC news on TV. Looks like uncontained failure of #2 engine. No injuries reported.

If uncontained failure e.g. blade separation, separated cowling should be shattered rather than relative large piece.

Looks like they've decided to ground the fleet.

------------------------------------------------------

A Qantas A380 aircraft operating QF32 from Singapore to Sydney experienced an engine issue soon after take off and returned to Singapore.

The aircraft had 433 passengers and 26 crew on board.

In line with procedure, the pilot sought priority clearance for its return to Singapore. The aircraft landed safely at 11.45am local time.

Some media reports suggested the aircraft had crashed. These reports are incorrect. No Qantas aircraft has crashed.

Information as at 4.20pm on 4 November 2010.

There have been no injuries to any customers or crew. The aircraft is currently de-boarding and hotels are currently being organised for customers and crew.

We are currently planning for an aircraft to depart for Singapore to bring passengers back to Sydney tomorrow morning. Passengers on QF32 are being accommodated in Singapore.

We have commenced our own investigations as to how this incident occurred and have notified the ATSB. We will continue to work with them as they investigate the issue. The flight crew carried out standard procedure for this situation.

Qantas has also indicated that, in accordance with its commitment to the highest safety standards, it has suspended scheduled A380 takeoffs until sufficient information has been obtained about what occurred on QF32.

Qantas Chief Executive Officer, Alan Joyce said Qantas would suspend A380 services until we are confident that Qantas safety requirements have been met.

Passengers on affected flights will be accommodated on alternative flights. Regular updates will be provided.

hmm interesting. I am booked on SQ 380s from ZRH to MEL in 2 weeks. My colleague from Germany is joining me and he booked QF from FRA. Must ask him if maybe one of his sectors is on 380.

Luckily nothing happened.
